Title: Music that changed you Post by: Ivan on March 31, 2009, 01:39:13 PM What was the track or album that had the greatest impact on you when you first heard it?
I'll start. Autechre - Clipper http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=c2c9fc6652 This track absolutely blew my mind when I first listened to it. It was on a mix CD that someone made and I listened to it at like 2 am on an empty subway platform. It made me fall in love with electronic music. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Zest on March 31, 2009, 02:04:58 PM Day in the Life, no question. Nobody had ever told me about the song, so I was surprised as hell by it. It made me realize that the Beatles actually were kind of a big deal.

http://fizy.com/yDsQRdO@_yTW (There is a silly AMV attached to it and the quality is bad, but eh) Don't ask me why, but it somehow changed the way I listen to music. I can't exactly say HOW it changed it, but it definitely did. And no, neither the song, nor the lyrics are exactly something you'd call deep. At least not in that meaning of the word. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Simon Andersson on March 31, 2009, 02:55:48 PM The first time I heard Ramones was probably quite life-changeing. Think it might have been 'I wanna be sedated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMD7Ezp3gWc&feature=related)' or something similar.

prokofiev caused me to appreciate classical music the seiklus soundtrack caused me to appreciate chiptunes the secret of evermore soundtrack caused me to like atmospheric music the earthbound soundtrack caused me to like weird music over traditional sounding music. so did the ys3 soundtrack, although it was weird in a different way. buck 65 caused me to appreciate hip hop, his song 'craftmanship' is amazing the barkely: shut up and jam: gaiden trailer music (the first trailer) is still my favorite exercise music shnabubula is my favorite OC remixer, in general OC remix is great; his dueling consoles secret of mana remix is so intricate Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: tylerjhutchison on March 31, 2009, 04:19:35 PM In the Aeroplane over the Sea, by Neutral Milk Hotel. Burzum's "Spell of Destruction" Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima Dissecting Table's "Least Mean Square Algorithm for Personality Alteration" Merzbow's Venereology Wormed's "Voxel Mitosis" I'm listing here only things that impacted me very significantly immediately upon first hearing them, not just any stuff that I listen to and like a lot, though obviously that has changed me too). Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: shinygerbil on March 31, 2009, 06:05:07 PM The album California by Mr. Bungle had a huge impact on me. Lots of music has had an impact, but if I had to choose one album which has had the biggest, that would probably be it.
Close runners-up include Discovery by Daft Punk and Toxicity by System Of A Down. I also agree with Paul about Prokofiev. <3 Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Selben Coirlo on March 31, 2009, 06:53:25 PM Good News and California are both great, though I've kind of lost interest in Mr Bungle these days. Just don't interest me that much any more. Good News, though, I started listening to right around the time a whole lot of bad shit was going down in my life, so it has some very interesting associations now.
Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Xion on March 31, 2009, 09:34:15 PM Slow Down Gandhi, by Sage Francis led me into liking meaningful rap and subsequently a renewed interest in spoken word poetry, of which I later recited my own in a café before small crowds of people - an unprecedented feat for li'l ol' introvert me.
Grandaddy, the entire group (first encountered on a commercial for the Honda Civic featuring their song "The Nature Anthem") led to a progressive calming-down in the type of music I like, and to a much more mellow self. Also, I get alot of music from commercials now. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Alec S. on March 31, 2009, 10:24:57 PM The album A Night at the Opera by Queen as it was what got me heavily into music.
The song Life on Mars by David Bowie as it pushed me towards thinking critically about entertainment. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Luilak on March 31, 2009, 10:30:59 PM Not so much music as more an entire music festival that changed the way I look at music.
It's the Dour Festival (http://www.dourfestival.be) that made me listen to more than metal and appreciate all that might be potentially good. It's the dour festival, which changed my social ways in a way I'll never regret. Damn, I love that festival. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Lucaz on March 31, 2009, 10:55:38 PM Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory, by Guided by Voices. First of theirs to catch my attention.
Spectre vs Rector, by The Fall. There's something special about Mark E. Smith yelling "Yog-Sothoth rape me lord". And The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda, by The Pogues. The saddest song I've ever heard. Now Is Better Than Before, by Jonathan Richman. Somehow made me a more optimistic person. I'm Waiting For The Man, by The Velvet Underground. Introduced me to them, and from there to lots of music. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: salade on March 31, 2009, 10:59:42 PM john coltrane - a love supreme

Also, I get alot of music from commercials now. The Sophtware Slump is a super excellent album. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: agj on April 01, 2009, 12:52:17 AM Rust in Peace, by Megadeth, was the album that got me seriously into music. I became a metalhead then, until well into highschool. I think then Coldplay's Parachute made me broaden my musical horizons--it's kind of embarrassing, as most people regard Coldplay as romantic pop trash, but Parachute is a very good album, and it hit a note in a particularly depressive period of my youth. I think that somewhere in between those, The Dark Side of the Moon made me realize that there was some great stuff to be found in classic rock.
Regarding Grandaddy, did they ever make another album quite as good as The Sophtware Slump? Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: sergiocornaga on April 01, 2009, 01:06:56 AM For those who haven't seen that trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M0FLAXXvRU Oh lord, I remember hearing that song on the schoolbus as a kid. Allow me to be a bit pedantic! As far as I know, the version in the game is something of a remix, a mashup made by the game's creator, Chef Boyardee of the original Space Jam track by the Quad City DJs and a song known as Funky Stars (or sometimes Hybrid Song 2:20) which was a mod/xm made by Quazar and originally used to accompany... a crack of Worms 2, I think? it made me realize how awesome music can be, that guitars kick ass and that metal is the law :wizard: :handmetalR: Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: jstckr on April 01, 2009, 01:26:38 AM The Fun Lovin' Criminals were my first real taste in music. Before that, I just tagged along with what was popular or advertised.
The Flaming Lips then became a band which is so life-affirming and positive and experimental and simply awesome that I listened to them for a long time. Then The Magnetic Fields, and with them (since he sang on one of Stephen Merrit's self-made self-tribute songs) Momus, which is what manifested my taste until today. The funny and interesting thing about The Magnetic Fields is that I've listened to them 15 years before I really knew them, when watching The Adventures of Pete & Pete. I think my taste was programmed at a very early age, I just needed to re-discover and admit to it. Also, add some Lullatone, for the minimal, supersimple cute melodies that I still like today. Asa-Chang & Junray also need to be mentioned. I've not heard such beauty before. This is more or the less the cornerstone recipe to my music taste today. Of course, there's hundreds of artists inbetween. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: pgil on April 01, 2009, 05:19:04 AM In the Aeroplane over the Sea, by Neutral Milk Hotel. This album does the trick every single time, it makes my emotion processors whrrrrrrrr. YES!I would also like to add Michigan by Sufjan Stevens. Awesome storytelling. I've been getting into jazz lately. Bitches Brew by Miles Davis makes long car trips much more bearable. Also it makes people think I'm cool :noir: Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Cthulhu32 on April 01, 2009, 06:49:50 AM I believe the first Radiohead album I ever heard was Kid A, then Amnesiac, then I stole my brother's copy of OK Computer. It was the first music I had ever heard that didn't make sense but sounded perfect at the same time.
After that, I'd say Windowlicker by Aphex Twin because it scared the crap out of me, and Microscopic by Download cause its ... well fucked up. I used to listen to a lot of Nine Inch Nails as well, but the new albums are kinda lame :/ Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: C418 on April 01, 2009, 11:09:25 AM I really think music changed me. Theres this Aphex Twin. You wouldn't believe me if I told you I listened to his music at a very young age. He prevented me from listening to music that would be usual for kids my age.
And then I really think my own music changed me. Like when I made this intentionally shitty album, my style of making music changed completely. Freaky stuff. Don't change myself anymore by myself! :epileptic: Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: siiseli on April 01, 2009, 11:15:52 AM lazytowns cake song.

I must say, when I first heard At The Drive-in and Fugazi, that really changed what I was into. But then I heard Captain Beefcake recently and that fucked things up again. Also, when Lil' Wayne(I think) sampled Heart in a song, that was awesome, showed even fairly shit rappers can use good samples Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Fuzz on April 01, 2009, 04:06:55 PM I believe the first Radiohead album I ever heard was Kid A, then Amnesiac, then I stole my brother's copy of OK Computer. Since then I've loved a lot of other music, but I'd say the song that most recently floored me is In The Flowers by Animal Collective off of Merriweather Post Pavilion. This.I second the greatness of NMH, AC and Aphex, but none of that really changed me. As I said Radiohead's when I started getting into good music. Before that it was horrible classic rock and bad pop groups that ignorant people listen to, thinking they where listening to the brave, outer fringes of music. Then I realized how wrong I was. The Sex Pistols are nothing special, but they got me into punk and I appreciate them for that. No Age and the Mae Shi got me into modern, and experimental punk (before that it was experimental music and punk separately). Botch got me into metal/extreme music. Now I listen to everything! They just managed to capture what skating music meant at that point and assembled an amazing playlist. It's a bit superior to the other soundtracks in the way GTA3 has the best soundtrack of all (3D) GTA games. It's easy to just buy all the music that's popular when you're big and have money, but for GTA3 they actually put lots of thinking into the music and found special, unknown artists to contribute. "Superman" from THPS1 is also an amazing song. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Fuzz on April 06, 2009, 12:26:31 AM 3. Bomb the Music Industry -Goodbye Cool World This record was a watershed moment for me in terms of my musical tastes, before I listened to this I was trying disparately to like a lot of Punk, Ska and Emo. I tried to dig deep into the meanings behind those types of music and I didn't really like what I saw. I felt the majority of those types of bands have a very small understanding of what they are actually trying to convey, but anything was better then nothing. Then I listened to "Bomb the Music Industry" with their hilariously named band, and excellent album names. I found in them truth, they weren't afraid to bring those other genres of music to task about how they really are. They are also capable of taking the piss out of themselves, also with interesting and introspective pieces about the inherent silliness of the indie music scene. Laced heavy with cynicism, you have to be in a similar place to truly appreciate what they are singing about. I started reading up about them as a band, and found they are really appreciative to their fans. You can come to a show with a blank CD and they will burn their albums for you, if you show up with a t-shirt they have paint and stencils to make your own band shirt or if you show up with an instrument, you can hop up on stage and play along with them, how cool is that? Instead of Rage's more screamy, less traditional rap, Street Sweeper is traditional rap with awesome guitar. I've never really liked traditional rap, but Street Sweeper is pretty ace. http://streetsweepermusic.com/ (http://streetsweepermusic.com/) You can download a promo EP for the 2009 NIN/JA tour with two of their songs on it here: http://www.ninja2009.com/ (http://www.ninja2009.com/) Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: salade on April 06, 2009, 07:48:29 AM john coltrane - a love supreme High five with other hand!one of the better pieces of music that exists in this universe. high-five returned! anyway, aside from jazz (especially bebop acutally), when it comes to music that has changed my life, I really find it interesting when someone makes music using some crazy method like with everyday objects, or smashing instruments together rather than playing them, or by just doing amazing thngs whith their body. more common examples that I can think of are people like bobby mcpharrin, and the blue man group. here is a not so common example (http://www.gemueseorchester.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=) also, I do listen to alot of classic rock. listening to led zep right now actually. Thanks for calling my attention to this. Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Zest on April 06, 2009, 11:53:12 AM I love you jstckr, more than mere words can describe. Off to iTunes!
Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Kekskiller on April 06, 2009, 12:25:32 PM The Metroid Prime soundtrack. One day I said down and listed to the Chozo sanctuary theme. I was so sad and the music was so beautiful... Yeah, I had to cry. I cried the tears of love. Love for videogame music.
Edit: Majora's Mask's music! The theme when Link got transformed from Deko to Human changed my entire musical perception. From this point I began to love melancholic music. Also, Negative (http://www.bad-sector.com/mp3/bad_sector_negative.mp3) by Bad Sector is worth to mention. I never heared anything like that before. It was my start into abrassive noisy music and is still affecting the way I listen to ambient. Voices - Disturbed Whats Left of the Flag - Flogging Molly Pulse of the Maggots - Slipknot When Worlds Collide - Powerman 5000 Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: jute on April 07, 2009, 09:15:54 AM As I said Radiohead's when I started getting into good music. Before that it was horrible classic rock and bad pop groups that ignorant people listen to, thinking they where listening to the brave, outer fringes of music. Then I realized how wrong I was. I really don't want to sound like an elitist, but are you asserting here that Radiohead represents the "brave, outer fringes of music"? The whole album, and especially the opening title track, which consists of the greatest studio guitar solo ever recorded, time and again rocks my socks off. But haven't you ever met someone who thought their taste in music was edgy because they listened to The Police or some garbage like that? Title: Re: Music that changed you Post by: Strong on April 07, 2009, 02:57:32 PM This is a little more recent, but de Blob's soundtrack absolutely blew me away when I first played it. I had no idea people could do things like that with video game music, and it was pulled off so well that it just left me stunned and happy.
