Title: Browser Game Honoring Thread
Post by: Bood_War on April 10, 2009, 06:13:41 AM
Okay (and correct me if I'm wrong) but I couldn't find any threads like this so...

Personally, when I hear Indie (as in games) I think of the downloadable stuff, but lately I've been playing some pretty kick-ass online games, so this thread is to honor outstanding online games, and their creators.

This is my list...

1. Thing-thing series and Diseased Productions.
Since the first Thing-Thing game, this series has stood out. With great graphics, a good story, and fun gameplay.
Along with this is Diseased Productions, that created thing-thing, has also made some other great games (ROCKET WEASEL!!!).

2.Boxhead series
(http://zip-zapgames.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/boxhead.png)
Weapon-based zombie fighting, with plenty of depth.

3.Sonny
(http://www.gamecouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/sonny-combat.jpg)
You are a Zombie in a cruel world. This is an outstanding RPG.

(Apologies for the short descriptions, I have to go)

Of course Space mutants FROM SPACE (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/490366) by our own toadtrip :-). Here is my review (copy/pasted from the above site):

I've actually never thought it would be possible to make a Flash game of this quality, but here it is in front of my eyes. I believe this game deserves much more recognition than it already has - it is a solid game, which can keep you playing for more than a couple of minutes that most Flash games do. The music is very good, the graphics superb and the controls awesome. All this alpha blending might make some older computers to slow down a bit, but i've seen much worse graphics in Flash with less performance. No really, this could be a game you would buy for Wii or XBLA, but you have it right here for free.

An advice for new players: make sure the first update you get is speed and the second the weapon powerup. It will make your life easier.

I highly recommend this to anyone in need of a fast paced shooter.

Ah, btw. There is nothing "retro" with this one - its as new and fresh as it gets ;-)

I love Thing-Thing so much! Here's my favorite browser game of all time, Red Baron:

I always thought that those Thing-Thing games are by far inferior to the original Madness Interactive: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/118826 (Download recommended). I like Madness Interactive a lot, though, and I'm rather disappointed that it didn't spawn improved sequels in the same vein, but rather tons of childish mods and this Thing-Thing thing.

One of my most favorite browser-based indie flash games is Click Drag Type 3 (http://www.mochimedia.com/games/cdt3/). It's a puzzle game including 15 entirely different puzzles. There are absolutely no instructions, you have to figure out each puzzle on your own. I liked playing it a great lot.
Don't go looking for the other 2 games, though. 10 of the 15 puzzles of CTD3 are from the predecessors, so it is the complete version :)

And, of course, a thread like this can't go without Orisinal: Morning Sunshine (http://www.mochimedia.com/games/cdt3/). Simply beautiful games.

3.Sonny

It's certainly better than most RPG Maker stuff out there, but Sonny is extremely linear and the plot stops making sense about 20 minutes in. There are several RPGs I'd pick over this just in Flash.

Sonny is awful. I don't get why it's so highly rated. I mean, sure it's extremely well polished, but the actual gameplay is a snorefest.

As this is a browser honouring thread though, my favourite is this. (along with all their others really.)

I liked Mardek RPG. It's witty, it matches my own aesthetic preferences (excluding some fairly awful flash art), and it was fun to play.

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/382579 Chapter 1

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/408513 Chapter 2

Much more fun than Sonny, in my opinion.

Well obviously the fancy pants series. Also armed with wings 2, while broken and glitchy, is still fun to play and gorgeous to look at. The sleeper is dolphin Olympics 2, which while it sound boring and seems that way at first, is actually amazingly addictive.

That is pretty great. Only managed to play the first though. The second keeps bugging out on me. :(

I almost forgot... incredibots.com (http://incredibots.com) (Check out the Howl's Moving Castle bot)

About Sonny- I don't play many browser RPG's, and of the few I've played, that's the one I've liked the best.

I agree. Mardek is awesome. So is Caravaneer (http://www.sugar-free-games.com/showgame.php?game=849). Here's one that not many people know about, but it's pretty innovative and just generally cool: Dreams (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/347589).

Whoa, that game is pretty crazy. Would definitely like to see that gameplay fleshed out into a full RPG.

That was pretty awesome. The combat wasn't very polished and too repetitive, but that's about my only complaint. I loved how it evoked that strange dream place with its own logic. The music was excellent, too. I think this shows that a compelling RPG can be made without all those tedious genre trappings like leveling up and elaborate inventory management.
