Title: Nanos
Post by: Tr00jg on October 05, 2007, 09:24:18 AM
This is a game I made early in 2006. It was for an experimental competition. I think this is one of the more innovative games I made. It is not exactly a "game", more like a eat-everything in sight for fun kind of thing/simulator.

You control a swarm. With this swarm you must eat the objects that roam in your small digital world. It is a nice stress reliever seeing the little bitty things chomp up the objects.

Controls:
Left- Swarm flows left
Right- Swarm flows right
Down- Swarm repels
Left Mouse- Create a nano

You have only have a certain amount of "credit". You can only place so much nano's. Whenever you destroy and object completely you get credit. That is all there is to do. Simple, but fun.

Tips:

There are various ways to move and eat things. You must discover these yourself, but here is the most obvious way to move.
-Creating a nano near the swarm, moves the whole swarm towards it.
-On my PC, if you have more than 40 nanos, slows down the PC. So it is advised not to create more than that.

Screenies:

(Yes, it doesnt say much)

It is only 1.25mb so there is no excuse to try it. :)

(yeah i know this thread is from 2007 it never got a reply)

- didn't work on vista, so i had to use the gm vista converter (guessing that it was a gm game due to its behavior of not loading but using up all my cpu anyway); may want to consider updating that

- liked the basic experiment, though without any levels it's hard to say how well it'd hold up in a longer game

- sometimes nanos disappeared without me knowing why (maybe they die when they go off the screen? it wasn't clear how they died or when)

- liked the music

- i found the 'flowing' left and right to be somewhat useless, so i just used the mouse to move. although if you hold left and down or right and down at the same time they spin really fast (fastest way to eat things)

- code probably could be optimized; even in gm it's strange to slow down when you reach 50-70 objects on screen

- might do with some effects (trails, particles, background, other polish stuff) and sound effects (at least a sound effect for creating a nano or for eating), sound effects add a lot to the feel of a game

- not much else to say about this game since it's so short, but it did give me ideas for future games or game elements so it was worth playing
