Title: Bad Apple Post by: Don Andy on August 06, 2009, 01:27:50 AM Bad Apple is one of the games I made on the bigjam and would like some actual feedback on, since I'm currently really fond of the idea to fleshen this out a bit into a real game.
(http://imgur.com/Ihe5P.png) Instructions: You play the Apple and gain points by eating Oranges (the smallest things). There are two modes, shooting and eating which you can freely switch between. Shooting is the only way to break up the larger enemies into smaller ones and eventually oranges. You are vulnerable to everything in shooting mode and the larger enemies kill you in both modes. Additionally, with each orange you gain more fullness. If it reaches 100 you are full and get killed if you touch another Orange. Controls: X - Switching C - Shooting (when in shooting mode) Cursor Keys - Moving I know the graphics are shitty as hell, so please no feedback on them. The game was quickly thrown together in 3 hours for a jam so it probably isn't perfect. Just want some feedback on how to improve the general idea. It's made in Construct so you'll probably need Windows and the newest DirectX to play it. I thought it was the best game made for the bad apple 3 hour game, and I have been wanting to play it myself! :handanykey::addicted::handjoystick:
Title: Re: Bad Apple Post by: george on August 18, 2009, 07:00:52 PM It definitely drove me to get a higher score...the basic idea is quite fun! I like the switching although for the soft like me I would like a half second of invulnerability when switching into shooting mode. You can really get nailed by an orange with what seems like not much of a collision.
The one thing I'd like more of is 'flow', I don't know how quite to describe it...the horizontality seems like a drawback in some sense, what about a topdown arena setup maybe with a zoom as more oranges fill the screen? Nevermind the graphics but I like the orange slices a lot! Also it seems like you don't get extra points for shooting pears or orange slices...is that intentional? Title: Re: Bad Apple Post by: Alec S. on August 18, 2009, 11:06:23 PM I like the switching mechanic quite a bit. The game was quite fun to play.
Title: Re: Bad Apple Post by: Don Andy on October 12, 2009, 05:30:19 AM Guwah, completely forgot about the thread myself. Glad I just remembered and figured it wouldn't hurt to see if I got replies. So, even if a bit belated:

You can really get nailed by an orange with what seems like not much of a collision. Yes, this bothered me a lot to in what little playtesting I actually did. In the revamp of it I'm currently working on I was thinking that instead of making it a toggle I'll make it a hold, meaning that you are only in eating mode as long as you are holding a button and snap out of it immediately when you let it go. Not sure yet if this will actually solve anything though. I think I will also introduce a health bar so as to give players a bit more of a puffer and not be mercilessly killed when they overeat or forget to switch. Yeah, I also get what you mean here. The whole thing feels a bit clunky in general although I attribute that to a lack of decent collision detection and the rather non-fluent movement of the fruits. The arena shooter thing sounds like a nice idea, but I think I will stick with the side-view for now (it fits the theme I intend for the revamp better). If the whole things picks off I might consider it for a sequel though :D You indeed only get points for eating stuff (or at least should) as to enforce the whole eating mechanic a bit. Or at least that's what I have planned, I'm not really sure how the scoring works in this anymore. Also, thanks battlerager and malec2b :) |
