For anyone that keeps missing the compo, we do have a mailing list.

http://www.gamecompo.com/mailing-list/

I send out announcements roughly a month before every major compo, and usually the Sunday of the prior week.  That should give most people time to book time off work and such.  Myself, I used to book the Friday and Monday's off so I could have Ludum Dare long weekends.

But I'm a full-time indie now, so everyday is a holiday. ;)

Finished! I'm a bit bummed that my original idea didn't work out though, since it had a pretty original gimmick.

Since the whole reason I made this is because I want to see how it plays I'd appreciate any feedback anyone wants to leave. (But, heads-up; it's a game that needs two of you.)

I'm kind of amazed that I finished Harvester (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=7986.0), given that I (stupidly) decided that I wanted to have a CCG battle system in it. I think I may have technically missed the Ludum Dare deadline by an hour, though. :(

So many entries!

I have to say, I was really disappointed with the theme (95% of indie games are probably "Cavern" themed already :(). BUT, I'm extremely happy with how my own entry turned out. I'm playing through the entries now, making my votes, and so far have played 3 right through to the end (Terry's, Dock's, and I can't remember the author of the 3rd one, but the game was extremely funny).

I'm just happy LD has themes, I don't really care what they are. I had ideas for just about everything that was in the third round of voting.

Here's my entry into Ludum Dare. A loving homage (rip-off) of a certain level from Battletoads. Use arrows to move around and double-tap left or right to dash in any direction to attack enemies. Kill enemies and avoid traps and see how deep you can get!

Candle (http://"http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-15/?action=rate&uid=854")
I had to scale the scope of this way back, so it's just a randomly generated obstacle course right now, but I think it's still pretty neat. I'm pleased with how it turned out, and am seriously considering expanding it into a much larger project.
Also, bonus, I wrote all of my journals in the persona of, I don't know, some russian guy or something, and I think they're pretty amusing personally.

Really pleased with how mine (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-15/?action=rate&uid=785) turned out.  And pretty amazed at how much I was able to get done within 2 days.  The caverns theme was kind of disappointing at first, but from what I've seen of the other entries, there's been a lot more originality than I would have expected from that theme.

Man, there were a lot of great entries in this!  There were a lot of entries period!

I'm not saying this is a definitive list or anything.  But taking on 144 entries can be pretty damn daunting.  I would suggest starting with these 10 and working out from there:

http://www.dreamofwinds.com/lonely/?p=986 (http://www.dreamofwinds.com/lonely/?p=986)

Hopefully I can figure out a way to get Caverns of Light working on my compy.  It just gives me a fatal error for now...

But taking on 144 entries can be pretty damn daunting.

I really like the way the website gives everyone a recommendation list of 20 games to try out and vote for. I'm focusing on those twenty first and I've been voting for them as I play them (on the ones that work!)

edit: oh! thanks for recommending my game! :)
Your article is really good, I hope others write up something similar. Some of those completely escaped my attention so far.

aside: does anyone know what the first 48-hour game competition was? ludum dare started in 2002, but there were a few before then; for instance the ohrrpgce 48-hour contest is a tradition going back to 2000. was it the first, or were there any earlier?

:-[ :( Sorry about that.  Any details you could give me to help me fix it?  I did just upload an updated version, which might make a difference.

If you're still having issues with the new (1.02) version you might want to try deleting the CavernsOfLight.conf file - I just discovered the game was defaulting to switching antialiasing on (completely unnecessary, since the graphics are all just bitmaps), which might cause problems.  You can find it at (depending on your OS):

  • Documents and Settings/<user name>/Application Data/CavernsOfLight (Windows XP)
  • Users/<user name>/AppData/Roaming/CavernsOfLight (Windows Vista)
  • /home/<user name>/.CavernsOfLight (Linux etc.)
  • /Users/<user name>/Library/Application Support/CavernsOfLight (OSX)

I think I made my game too user-unfriendly:
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-15/?action=rate&uid=741

I like the control scheme, but I should have found a way to ease the player into it more.

We have a page of all links here.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-15/?action=misc_links

But do realize, some games are web-only.  Others may be on free hosting services, requiring a click.  The majority should work from there, but it's likely someone will produce a batch download.

I'll get bugging people to start that tomorrow, just to be sure we've given enough time for people to get their ports in.

Big thank you to Mike (PoV) for making this happen again, can't believe there were 144 entries (and so many good ones!) in a 48 hour compo.  Can't wait til next time.
