Title: Tarboy
Post by: Glaiel-Gamer on August 26, 2009, 12:09:24 PM
Tarboy (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/509092)

Possibly the best flash animation I've ever seen. The animation is superb, the art is stylistic, the music is good, the story is neat, and most of all it's paced correctly and it's timing is spot on. It just smells so professional compared to the sea of crap that 94% of flash animations are.

Plus the pistons in the credits are pretty sweet.

Holy crap that was amazing.  Especially the fight scene in the dark.

I thought some of the scene transitions should have been smoother. But, other than that, this is quite excellent :)
Looking forward to the Music of Tarboy (http://www.tarboy.com/music.html).

That has "here comes a sequel" written all over it.  :eyebrows:

goddamn awesome.

Also the sequel has already been made. something about a ball of tar going into a dungeon to rescue his girlfriend or something like that.

Oh ya it was one of those weird things where the sequel was made first and stuff... and it was like a game instead or something? ya that game sucked, I'm glad that guy went on to make braid and world of goo instead

Very well made but I don't like the style or the "story". Or maybe I'm just tired :tired:

yea, this is really well done.

btw, did you watch the bonus features? it looks like they even did some of the characters in 3D. i'm wondering if they render those out in something else and brought it in later. plus the particle effects demos in there look like it might be a similar situation.

i was also impressed with the voice acting.

I think as it was a film school project they may have been required to do 3D concept models even if they weren't using them in the animation.. i base that on absolutely nothing

"Shut up Billy!"  :D

I love it. Great script, music, storyboarding, and moments of brilliant animation.

i thought it was really good, but it could have been better if it stuck to the original song and the old guy telling the story the whole time. i didn't think they had a very good transition to the part when he was in the water cooler and the song changed, it sounded like  it got cut off.

I didn't much care for the style either.

But more specifically: why is it that people are starting to draw mouths that protrude all the way past the back of the jaw of the face they are supposed to be a part of? Like it's a stuck-on mouth.

Penny Arcade do it, lots of other people do it, so clearly plenty of people have seen it and decided "yes, this is cool; I will incorporate it into my style". So is it only me that thinks it looks really, really crap?

Great animation all around (and nice glowy colors in the dark scene) but I kept wishing to be even more musical. I mean like a musical with dancing and singing... :laughter:

maybe in the sequel?

Those glows were very, VERY nice. I wonder if it would be possible to replicate them with a simple shader. I should look into this.

Looks way way way too much like Flash for me. And all the animation is about 150% too exaggerated just like most Flash stuff. I much preferred Bitey of Brackenwood.

No. Nor am I much of a fan of the split head model.

The animation is impressive, but alas, I also did not like the art style.

Well, the animation is overall well crafted. However, like mentioned earlier, its flahs animation. It's filled with static models with their parts moved to create the illusion of movement. Like high quality cardboard-based animation. You can feel where the models seperate. Regarding the split head thing, it seems to be around since the early days of Flash animation. Probably because its quite easy to create. Or Because "Terrance and Phillip" from South Park really influenced flash animators. I dunno.

Still, to give credit where credit is due, the animation is pretty sweet. I really like the black and white intro of the "fight in the dark" sequence. Nice silouhette use. In general its pretty sweet. And the script is pretty good too.

Thanks for sharing :)

Yeah, I could have definitely gone for more grandpa all the way through. Although the Pink Panther homage was pretty well done :D

holy f*ck  :wtf:

anyway it's not done in flash, as you can see in the bonus material they even used 3d models

maybe they used toonboom plus some 3d software or something similar

Same boat (Brackenwood is excellent <3). I agree with several people here that the presentation and storytelling was excellent and entertaining. But I also agree that the actual art was pretty cheap, and had that ugly flash "decal" look (even if it wasn't flash-made) and feel to it. Some animations (like the silhouette's walk cycle) were really smooth and well done, others were just pieces of the bodies moving around, which looked terrible in comparison. Also, ugly use of linear gradients everywhere, the way it was used to "shade" everything, ugghh... doesn't give anything body, makes it all just look more flat, even.

But still, I liked it :) only Flash cartoon I've watched in ages, and 'twas worth it.

EDIT: oh, and that fight scene must have contained every awesome special effect known to man.

Absolutely fantastic, one of the best animations I've ever seen. The music was especially good.

Fuck yeah!

Despite the setting being a bit to "generic 00:ies internet steampunk with burton vibes" (g0isb-style) it was freaking prrfect. Doing that in flash... Maybe some of it was made in toonboom or the like and then somehow exported to flash, that would make it a lot easier to create those 3D things. Well, anyhow  :handclap::giggle:

You can render to swf straight from maya, so making the character animations could easily have been done in that way.

I totally loved it. I didn't mind the style, but would agree that brackenwood is still the best flash animation ever, possibly drawn with ninjai.

Awesome, the first part is the best! Actually it reminded me more of Dr. Seuss than Tim Burton...

I'll echo onc agin what others said, about the animation being very cool, but the style overdone. I presonally don't like the prominent Invder Zim like art that has emerged in a few years already.

And while I could smell someflahs trcisk tehre in some of the less polished animations, they still were rather well done, so I really don't mind that. The music was its winning point for me.
