Title: Dust: An Elysian Tail

Is anyone else excited for this game? It looks really great. The animation is fluid, the plot looks a bit cliche but still interesting enough to get into, and the battles look fun as all hell.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who are turned of by an anthropomorphic mammal main character, but it wasn't a big deal in the 90s and as long as it isn't sexual I don't see any reason to oppose it.

All in all, I'm really, really excited to see this game in action. :laughter:

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure HyperDuck is working on music for this game, which from what I've heard in the trailer is pretty great.

If I could animate like that...

The gameplay looks like,  :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey:, so definitely not my type. I can't stand just whacking enemies over and over again with a small set of moves. I'm more interested in the animations and special effects, which look like a ridiculous amount of work. Wow!

It's been posted on the front page a while back. The response was about what you'd expect.

It looks like it could be fun. I'm keeping an eye on it.

A little hands-on from PAX. (http://pixelatedgeek.com/2009/09/pax-2009-dust-an-elysian-tail/) Seems to be pretty positive on the whole. I think it looks pretty good.

It's not my type of game fun wise but the animation is amazing

The best part about this game is the animation and effects; just gorgeous. The game has a great unified art style that really helps pull it all together.

Chevy, you're right about the  :handanykey: :handanykey: :handanykey:, but I had fun just jumping around and smashing things. Animation like that really helps make it feel so fluid and enjoyable.

I tried it at PAX09; it was a good experience as a whole, but wish I had a bit more hands-on time with it to actually feedback on the gameplay

Apparently it was done by 1 guy in 10 months. The game is supposed to help promote a TV show he is putting out or something.

Their website (http://noogy.com/main.html) has some still shots of the animation film/show in the gallery section.

One guy in 10 months? Jesus, this looks like it was made by 10 people in 10 months.

Yeah, Dean Dodrill is a machine. Plus he tells me he has kids and is a pro dad as well. So big props to him for pulling this out of the hat. The guy didn't know how to program last year, so.. pretty impressive stuff.

That is correct. Dan & I (HyperDuck Studios) are the music behind this. Alex Brandon did the piano melody at the start, but that is all he will be doing for the project. We're going to be the sound of Dust: An Elysian Tail! So excited, considering it won 1st place at DBP 2009. Awesome stuff.

Chris.

Oh FUCK YES. Dodrill is a great animator, and it's awesome to see him do some more work. The last game he worked on was Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (as far as I know), and he did all the cinematics. Love the dude's style. Looking forward to this game, as I shall be forcing my friend to buy it once it's done.

Movie, actually. He's been working on it since like... 2002? I think? Been a while, at least. It will probably be pretty awesome as well.

Been working on the film since 2002. Not this game, but yes still incredible work!

That people would find a character design off-putting just because it's an anthropomorphised animal is simply sad.

Haven't you heard? Hating is the cool thing. Been done for so many years.

It's odd though... it seems to be a rather recent occurence. I remember all the TV shows I watched growing up were about anthropomorphic animals (Rupert the Bear, Padington Bear, Little Bear, Franklin the Turtle, Arthur, Redwall...). Now they're all flash-animation-knockoffs or cheap 3d-renderings of humans.

It's like there's been a steady decline of anthropomorphism recently, probably due to the whole "furries" thing becoming more well-known, and people therefor trying to avoid such stigma. (Anthropomorphic animals being viewed as fetishism instead of stylism or artistic choice, that is.)

Well, at least it does make your stuff instantly noticeable nowadays...

But the truth is that to let the fetishes of a group of people in the internet dictate what you believe is 'proper' in art in general is just plain stupid, narrow-minded thinking. Saddeningly, narrow-minded thinking is the norm for people.

Well, at least games like Ratchet and Clank are successful. Though that may be linked to the fact that the character is actually an alien. Maybe people are more lenient towards aliens?

Maybe someone needs to ramp up on the alien pron.

It kinda makes me want to support games like this more. Games made by people that have balls enough to not let the stupidity of people in general dictate their artistic directions. Same for the Overgrowth guys.

Looks and sounds very nice, no question.  I thought the top 20 DBP had quite a bit of noteworthy titles in fact.  But Dust of course has the visual edge here.   If you;re a tower defense fan, I thought Sol Survivor looked like a pretty unique take.

It makes sense that this could be put together in 10 months, since a lot of the movie assets could be re-purposed to work in a 2d game. And because it's the same guy doing both the movie and the game there's no communication overhead, no ramp-up, so it's a huge time savings on art.

Also, anthro characters are generally pretty awesome if you use them in context(furry stuff basically ignores the context, making it tasteless at best). They're an abstraction that lets you include the intellectual aspects of humanity while exaggerating emotion and abilities to capture the essence of other creatures. Plus they fit well into toon-style drawing.
