Title: Undergrad degree in physics? Post by: Ivan on September 28, 2009, 09:47:45 AM I'm in my late 20s, but i've never gotten a proper undergrad degree, so I'm thinking of going to school and getting a BA in Physics, in hopes to continue to astrophysics/astronomy graduate studies in the future.
Has anyone majored in Physics in the past or is currently majoring in it? Any thoughts or suggestions? Title: Re: Undergrad degree in physics? Post by: Aquin on September 28, 2009, 10:51:35 AM Do a good job of questioning the professor when it comes time for quantum mechanics. You'll quickly poke holes in a lot of it. Be harsh when it comes to that stuff and don't just accept that "the math works". The math worked in the Ptolemaic system as well.
Once you get far enough in astrophysics, you quickly realize that at some point you jumped from science to creative writing. It is a murky line and you will likely cross it by accident. But really, I had a LOT of fun doing astrophysics specifically. You need a lot of Physics courses (which are kinda not so fun), but I think it was worth it. Just keep out of the "one side or the other"-kinda-religious mentality at the end of the road and you'll have a good time too. Title: Re: Undergrad degree in physics? Post by: handCraftedRadio on September 28, 2009, 12:18:16 PM I've kind of noticed that same thing when it comes to parts of physics. Especially when things dealing with light particles/waves, it seems to me like there is a lot of stuff that they are assuming(making up), just because they don't want to admit they haven't figured it out yet.
