But I can't stop playing Super Mario Galaxy, even with all the "WAHOOOOO."

Yeah, Galaxy is pretty shweet. I actually don't mind Mario's voice too much, considering it's been impregnated on my meninges playing Super Mario 64 (still the 3D platformer to rule 'em all, IMHO) for hours on end when I was a kid.  :-*

galaxy would be infinitely better if it didn't follow the EVERY PLATFORM NEEDS TO ACT LIKE IT HAS A GRAVITATIONAL PULL ON THE CAMERA rule so seriously

or at all

Not sure what you mean, but I'm the kind of guy who never notices the "camera issues" people complain about in games. The only game I can think of where I really had a problem with the camera was Devil May Cry.

Title: Re: mario =

i mean like

if you were walking up a 'wall', it was fine

but then you got towards the top and it suddenly started having a seizure until you got to the other side

where it would continue to move sporadically for awhile

Title: Re: mario =
Post by: moonmagic on October 01, 2009, 02:00:54 PM
I do expect a certain degree of camera silliness when playing a third-person 3D thing. Unless it's God Hand.

Which doesn't forgive camera silliness.

Actually, tutorial-style explanations of game mechanics bug me more than camera issues. It is a regrettable feature in most contemporary games. It makes me not want to talk to most of the little Crest mascots in the game, because I am afraid they will tell me something like, "Did you know you can SHAKE THE WIIMOTE to SPIN???"

I thought Messhof did a funny song on that theme with YOU FOUND THE GRAPPLING HOOK. "Near the beginning, there is a rock. You can jump over it with 'x.'"

I absolutely adore Mario's voice, though that probably is due at least in part to nostalgia.

Yeah, this kind of stuff sucks. Just have an optional tutorial level and be done with it, for fuck's sake! This whole "forcefully integrating the tutorial into the story" thing in modern games is bugging me too, as well as the tendency of simple action games in particular overemphasize story and "atmosphere" even if neither are particularly good or interesting.

Actually, let's turn this into a "why games suck these days" thread, shall we?  :D

Actually, let's turn this into a "why games suck these days" thread, shall we?  :D

Oh, that wasn't my intent. I started this thread because I spent my whole morning feeding star bits to apparently latex-clad stars (aside: I wish my food looked like miniature versions of me), and I really enjoyed myself.

I think that teaching the player how to play your game is a challenging thing, and I sometimes wish that Mario games relied more on environmental clues. The first little planet where you get to run around with the bunnies is great. I had given the game to a friend to play and he was figuring things out while we were talking. Being that we were having one of those conversations about the Kindle, he didn't have time to read any text and was just skipping it. It's a testament to the game that it remains fun while the player blithely ignores everything he is being told.

 More bunny planets, please.

Title: Re: mario =
Post by: C.A. Silbereisen on October 01, 2009, 03:11:00 PM
Yeah, now that you mention it, the bunny "level" was pretty cool, but I actually think the game is simple enough to not need any kind of tutorial as such.

On a side note, I'll be the first to admit the Wii sucks in the "grand scheme of things" but games like Galaxy and a few other worthwhile exclusives keep me from selling mine :D

I think that if the bunnies didn't talk, the bunny level would be the only tutorial one would need. Just a nice, peaceful world to play around in.

I like the Wii. I have the benefit of adopting much, much later than most people, so I can be picky about the things I purchase. The disappointment factor is much lower that way, and I don't have to put up with weird, shitty abuses of the Wiimote.

Still, one of my favorite games I have played is SUPER BUNGEE BUDDIES.

All of those except Madworld. I mean it was OK, but I got this uncomfortable "trying too hard" vibe from it more often than not.

I'm also hyped for No More Heroes 2, I'm a big Suda51 fan, I even played through Flower, Sun and Rain despite the fact that the actual gameplay was horrible :D

On another note, can anyone tell me why the DS gets so much flak in some regions of the net? I mean, I have both a DS and a PSP. I have more than 30 DS games all of which I enjoy, but all my favorite PSP games are actually emulated SNES and Genesis games.
Sorry, just a random thought that came up, don't let me derail this thread even further (hell was it even ever on a rail?)  :D

Title: Re: mario =

yeah nmh2 is gonna be great

also, not really sure why people hate the ds so much. although i prefer the psp to it, i still have a few ds games that i'll play every now and then

different audiences are probably a huge part of it, psp games are more SRS, GORE, (cartoon)VIOLENCE, MANLY MAN games

Title: Re: mario =

I absolutely adore Mario's voice, though that probably is due at least entirely to nostalgia.

I didn't play the first game, but I remember DMC3 having a fairly decent camera, with some exceptions.

Title: Re: mario =
Post by: C.A. Silbereisen on October 01, 2009, 03:49:49 PM
Yeah, I was talking about the first one. From the third onwards (never played 2) the camera was decent. The problem in DMC1 was the Resident Evil style fixed camera angles and the way they abruptly changed once you walked over a certain (invisible) trigger. The problem is that the controls are camera-sensitive and a sudden change of angle in the middle of a fight fucks them up in a serious way, to the point that fighting at a "camera angle intersection" can mean certain death.

Quote

Yeah, of course, it's just that none of these MANLY MAN games on the PSP have been really great thus far. Most of them are stripped-down ports of PS2 games. But still it's kinda weird that everytime a "worthwhile" DS game comes out (which is more often than most people seem to think) you get your slew of classic "looks-like-I-have-a-reason-not-to-sell-my-DS-now" type comments. I mean, people are treating the DS like it's the Wii when in fact it's got tons of enjoyable games.

But that again, might be tied to the audience thing. The reason the I like the DS so much more than most people is probably because a lot of retro-ish games, like Platformers, Metroidvanias, old-school JRPGs etc. are coming out for it which is right up my alley.  :D

I... didn't really like Super Mario Galaxy as much as 64 and Sunshine, to be honest.

:outraged: :outraged: :outraged:  :handshakeL::whome::handshakeR: :outraged: :outraged: :outraged:

Although everyone I tell that to says it's because I've only gotten as far as 60 stars and then stopped. I thought that playing through all the levels once and beating the final(?) boss was enough to at least tell whether or not I liked the game.

Maybe I'll fire it up again one of these days and find out what everyone's talking about.

oh, i'm not denying that the games on the psp tend to suck
i'm just saying, when games revolving around shooting are the most popular genre(s) right now, the system that can handle them at a graphical level that the average idiot can appreciate enough that they ignore how bad the game actually is, is probably going to sell more than the system that sells games trying to be appealing to literally every audience in existence right now. Because it's NOT being overloaded with first person shooters and tactical shooters, etc, etc, etc. And they're NOT advertising their asses off trying to show everyone

HEY

WE HAVE GAMES WITH BLOOD AND GORE

intead, they're trying to show everyone

HEY

WE HAVE GAMES THAT ARE FUN AND HAVE GREAT REPLAY VALUE(usually)

I liked it better than Sunshine but less than 64. But you sound overly negative about it. I mean, being worse than Super Mario 64 isn't really an indication of low quality, is it?  ;)

Title: Re: mario =

I doubt you'll feel different.

Hmmm... that's a bit disappointing.

Then again, I'm unfairly hypercritical of a lot of things at first. I was pretty harsh towards Super Mario 64 when it first came out, but now I accept it as the king of 3D platformers.

Sunshine was kind of weird for me at first, especially since it took out a lot of the exploration 64 (possibly unintentionally) offered (and they still haven't fixed with the series, for some reason. Like I said, it may have been unintentional all along), but it tried something different and was pretty successful with it, I felt.

Galaxy also had a gimmick of sorts attached to it, but for some reason, it didn't really connect with me. I think I had been jaded by other games with the same idea (Psychonauts' Milkman stage, for one), but I think it was the level designs that just felt kind of... flat. Especially Good Egg Galaxy, which was the first stage, which should be one of the most memorable, was really boring to me. Nothing really stood out about it.

But I dunno. Maybe a revisit will change my mind.

I... didn't really like Super Mario Galaxy as much as 64 and Sunshine, to be honest.

It's not a bad game, I'm just not terribly fond of it. Everyone else seems to love it, however, and I can't figure out what it is that I'm missing.

Probably a heart or a soul.

Wait, those exist? Not trying to be stand-off-ish, just curious. I had thought they didn't do those any more because of how different the Wii is.

Also there's a shocking lack of Broken Sword on your list.  :)

I'd say it's one of the best games on the system, if you like adventure games. (Traditional adventure games, not the half-action bullshit that Nintendo counts as "adventure game", though that truly is more accurate.)

On the second level in the original mario, if you jump on top of the roof and run the whole way across the screen to the right passing the final exit tube, you can take a warp tube to almost any world you want.

I've only played two Mario games, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island (which I never finished). It's staying that way.

Broken Sword isn't a Wii exclusive.

Bowser has gotten even lamer than Dracula, who is pretty much a joke after SotN.

Broken Sword isn't a Wii exclusive.

Yes it is. It's a director's cut of the original game. The only other system it's on is the DS, but that doesn't deserve mention.

They re-animated a fair bit of stuff too, so it would look better at higher resolution. Plus they added a bunch of parts where you control Nico, and it gets deeper into the story. So in terms of it being the Director's Cut, I'd say it counts as an exclusive.

Any advice on defeating the cyberdemon?

Hold the A button to run up against the nearest brick for cover to avoid the fireball and hammer barrage from the dragon.

Strafe around until you hit the axe at the end. Use the axe on the bridge to either cut the rope on the bridge (do this if you are going on the Good path) or run back and hack up the Dragon with the axe (do this if you are going for the Evil path).

Either way will unlock an achievement and a new multi-player CTF map.

I won't spoil what happens next, but let's just say the game isn't over just yet.

You could use the flamethrower as well and incinerate the dragon. You need to press the B button repeatedly for that.

@Shade Jackrabbit: Oh, I was sure it was the same as the original but with just redone graphics. I'd like to play that now. The original is one of my favorite adventure games.

Yeah, I played the original on a PS1 port, and that was pretty good. This director's cut is great though. The wii controls are really ideal for a point and click adventure as well, hence why I'm glad that a lot more adventure games are transitioning onto the console, so those who don't want to bother with PCs can still play awesome games.

It also has a kinda neat two-player mode. Basically, one person has control, but the other gets a faded cursor which they can use to point and stuff, and make it flash to alert the other person. Control can be swapped between the two players as well, in case you get tired of pointing and clicking. I found it really fun with my brother.

The only annoying thing is that they removed the death scenes to make it easier for the player, cause modern players get pissed off at that. (Which I can't really blame them for.) It's kind of sad if you liked the original death scenes (George getting dumped in the river by the thugs) but it's definitely made up for with the extended parts with Nico and better graphics.

[/recommendation]

Well, I knew something years ago, but the memory is foggy and the procedure was far too complex to be remembered properly. I guess it had something to do with "shooting" and "dying", whatever that means. But really, I can't recall it.

Have you heard a word I said? Warp tunnels. You don't need to fight him if you are going to warp right past him. You can just leave him alone, it doesn't matter. And besides, (spoiler alert) the princess is in another castle anyway.

Actually, I just played Noby Noby Boy today and that game pretty much consists of what you're describing. It's like it doesn't just have moments that are like that, in the way Mario does, the silly/funny/happy stuff pretty much makes up the fabric of the whole game. Suffice to say I spent my playing session giggling like the idiot I probably am.  :D

I do not think my life will be complete if I do not play Noby Noby Boy.

But I do not own  PS3.

I am sad.

I wish I had one of these Next-Gen things or Now-Gen or something to take Advantage.

Alas! I have to satisfy myself with Opniyama, and the collision detection is buuusted.

Planescape, inside Fall-From-Grace's mind-stimulating brothel, talking to prostitutes.
This is almost like playing GTA :coffee:

RHYTHM TENGOKU GOLD

that game is so fun

i still have to get 38 perfects though (god damn!)

other games that make me feel the same way are warioware touched and runman: race around the world.

it's a rare breed of game that I love so much.

i'm also playing pokemon platinum at the moment (17 hours in and not even halfway through)
