Title: Stuff you recently bought/got
Post by: siiseli on October 25, 2009, 11:51:27 AM
What have you gotten/bought recently? Please no really small stuff like "I bought some candies :3."

I recently went to a book fair and picked up some Milan Kundera, Anthony De Mellos "Awareness", and Nietzsches "The gay science".

-A CD of Weird Al's album Bad Hair Day.
-Hexen, for Win95/Dos
-Four old episodes of The Outer Limits, on VHS
-Escape from New York on VHS

I picked up a really nice, old typewriter from the Salvation Army the other day. I have never really used a typewriter before but it was just really, I don't know, aesthetically pleasing about it in a retro-throwback sort of a way. It is probably about 40 years old or so and is in pretty damn good condition. Apparently it is a Remington Ten Forty portable typewriter (totally mechanical too which I thought was awesome). It even had all of the manuals, so I felt it was a steal at only $3. All that needs to be done is some of the keys need a little WD-1040 and the case needs to be cleaned a bit but that's about it.

I also bought the first issue of Love and Rockets off of the Fantagraphics website and picked up Ice Haven and Persopolis from Hastings on the cheap ($3 for Ice Haven and $1 for Persopolis! Hardcovers even).

Not sure about the US, but here in Canada, it's 70 dollars for consoles, and 50 dollars for PCs. BOOYAH.

...Don't have that much money, though.  :'(

You and me both brother, you and me both. See, if only they would price these things at around $30-$40 or so, now that would be reasonable. No wonder I always have to wait for a Steam sale to get any new games...

Windows 7. It feels exactly like Vista except now with a worse interface. But I managed to arrange the icons and do a bunch of hacks so it works just like it used to in the Vista/XP days. It's pretty good now with all the tinkering I've done to it. I'm actually starting to really like it now.

It's kind of short, but play it on Legendary and it's one hell of a challenge. But honestly, it's not pretty bad. It's pretty good in my opinion. Campaign mode is great, far better than Halo 3's. As for online: Firefight is fun with a friend doing split-screen, and it comes with a second disc that has Halo 3's online mode (and a few new good maps). Well worth the money. :)

odst... very good of what i played so far. just the art design and the 'silenced smg' alone makes it feel very different from halo3

the combat is still pretty much the same tho, but its a lot more entertaining and challenging...
and i died a lot in normal difficulty :(

borderlands is good too... just got to level 6 :-o

We can totally make this happen. I just need to clean it up (just used it to screen a bunch of album covers for my band) then it`s good to go again. I`m not the best at it yet, takes a bit of trail and error, but send me the idea you want and we`ll figure out if it`s do-able  ;)

Well, I didn't buy this, but I "got" it, so...

A ~15-year-old Dell AT101W keyboard, dug it out of my attic and spent a few hours disassembling and cleaning it out. Wonderful, clicky keyboard, they really don't make them like they used to... I'm still looking for a deal on an IBM Model M, but I think this'll hold me over...

Haha, I have one just like that! It is indeed a fine piece of input engineering. I also have a model M, but let me assure you that this is not far behind the IBM's feel at all. Plus, model M's have a tendency to act funky with certain PS/2 ports.

My birthday is coming up, and the wife and I were pretty set on getting a blu-ray player. I was originally going to grab a ps3 slim because the price was so comparable between players vs. game console, but the Panasonic was $139.96 w/ free shipping and no tax so that seemed like a MUCH better deal.

Whooo, big shopping day for me yesterday. I stopped by Fry's Electronics to pick up two copies of Torchlight. (which I found and acquired) But while I was there, I succumbed to the temptation to build a new rig. I've been wanting me a proper Linux box for some time. My day job is web design and coding, so having more hands-on experience with Linux servers is a good idea.

I ended up buying...
An MSI motherboard
An Intel Celeron Processor (2.4 GHZ, 64-bit compatible)
A Cooler Master exterior case (2 five-inch bays, 2 three-inch bays)
2 Gigabytes of DDR2 RAM
A 600W Power Supply
A DVD Burner drive
A 250 GB 2.5 inch notebook hard drive (along with mounting adapter)
An MSI 512 MB PCI-Express 3D accelerator
A PCI Wireless network adapter

After mail-in rebates, the entire package only cost me around $325. I assembled most of the components last night, and I'm planning on installing Ubuntu on it when I get home from work.
