Title: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: skaldicpoet9 on October 26, 2009, 11:43:43 AM Ok, so I have been playing this game for the last hour and it is fan-fucking-tastic. I love the deliberate pace of the game. They did an excellent job at handling the FPS and RPG elements, there seems to be a lot of balance between the two genres represented (except berserk, which seems to be insanely effective).
I had to literally pull myself away from the game. It is just so addictive. The loot is plentiful and very fun to find, I like how they just tend to scatter loot everywhere so whenever you explore any random beaten path there is sure to be a good pile of loot around the corner. I have only been playing the single-player thus far but I plan on hopping online with a buddy or two and doing so co-op action. What do you guys think of the game so far? Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Melly on October 26, 2009, 12:37:37 PM I'm being quite pressured at buying it. Everybody says it's the best shit since sliced bread.
So I assume this gets the best out of Diablo and FPS's? Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: skaldicpoet9 on October 26, 2009, 01:16:45 PM Well, sliced bread is still pretty damn good so I don't know about that but yes, it does take the best elements of games like Diablo and Bioshock and merges them together. The FPS combat feels more deliberate and slower paced much like the combat in Bioshock. The loot drops and special items and guns in the game give the game a very dungeon crawl/spelunking kind a feel, at least for me. There is tons of loot and a lot of variety in the guns as far as I have seen. Not only that but the difficulty of the game is somewhat harder then most games these days which is a more than welcome fact for me personally.
I haven't played online yet but I can already tell it is going to be a blast. Apparently you can also duel other people in your team and you can go to an arena an PvP online which really appeals to me (this is all coming from a friend of mine btw, I don't have any direct knowledge of this yet). I would say to you if you like games such as Diablo 2 and Bioshock then buy this for sure. You won't be disappointed. (note: When I compare it to Bioshock I am talking about the deliberate nature of the gameplay in both games, not the atmosphere of the game which is much different and slightly tongue-in cheek type humor). Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: C.A. Silbereisen on October 26, 2009, 01:18:50 PM So I assume this gets the best out of Diablo and FPS's? Yup. It does an excellent job at transplanting Diablo's game mechanics into an FPS setting. You usually fight large groups of enemies, which makes for some intense firefights, loot collecting is always lots of fun and the procedurally generated weapons and item locations keep things fresh. The only major criticism I have is that character development is a bit shallow. Each character class only has one special ability, and even though they're all very useful and unique and can be "modified" in certain ways, I don't think the classes are different enough from each other. The skill trees are ridculously tiny and almost all the "skills" amount to boring ol' stat bonuses. But don't let that detract you, it's certainly one of the best action RPGs this year (second only to Demon's Souls for me) and one of the few "Diablo-likes" that gets almost everything right. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: skaldicpoet9 on October 26, 2009, 01:29:15 PM The only major criticism I have is that character development is a bit shallow. Each character class only has one special ability, and even though they're all very useful and unique and can be "modified" in certain ways, Yeah, that was the first thing that I noticed. I was hoping for a little more customization when it came to the character creation and much more meaningful stat bonuses then what are available. The skills are pretty damn good though and I have had a lot of fun with berserk so far (I accidentally pressed F instead of G and beat Nine Toes, the first boss, to a bloody stump lol). I am hoping that they release a patch or some small DLC or something to improve the skill trees though and add in some more abilities. Hell, after playing this for awhile I just keep thinking about everything that could do for a sequel as crazy as that is, because there are so many things they could tweak and expand upon... Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Radnom on October 26, 2009, 03:14:47 PM I was all set up and looking forward to playing Borderlands today, I got up at 7:00 AM for the 8:00 AM launch, made myself a large breakfast of french toast, bacon and banana to last me the day, I'd pre-loaded it yesterday so it was ready to play today, then, 20 mins before it was set to launch...

of course, I'm not the one buying. it's for my b-day! (nov. 4th) Also helps because I'm picking out a new computer, and it will now need to be able to run it. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Lord Tim on October 26, 2009, 09:06:39 PM I've been playing this game all day as well, and it is great.
The only thing I don't like about it so far is that you get separated levelwise from people you are playing with rather quickly if any of them play single-player or you aren't in the group for a while. I don't think it'll be quite so much a problem at higher levels when it takes longer to level up, but in lower levels if you're 5 levels under someone else, and you do their missions, don't expect to spend most of that time alive. Still, the game has tons of awesome stuff to do, and the quests are really varied, so you can still do the lower level ones and have fun. If any tigdudes see me on in steam, feel free to send an invite. Also: Gamespy: L0RD_T1M Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: YagerX on October 27, 2009, 01:29:23 AM I will buy it the week of Nov 16. The day I am free from exams.
Hopefully. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: mark on October 27, 2009, 01:51:29 AM I've pre-ordered it and now I'm just waiting for the release :)
And if anyone is thinking about going to the Steam forums to check out what people thing about the game: Don't, they're all whining about not getting the game and that valve is breaking the law...don't ask  Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: roboprez on October 27, 2009, 03:28:43 AM I not sure if I'm going to buy this or not. When I first heard about it I was like HELL YEAH, Fallout3 with less RPG and more FPS!. But now I'm weighing up between This and Modern Warfare 2. I was putting COD on top of my list but now with the whole lack of Dedicated Server and Mods has made me iffy. Now I don't know what to get and just want to crawl up in a corner and play Tetris
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: mark on October 27, 2009, 03:35:20 AM If you have tetris or Yoshi Cookies on the gameboy I suggest you go play that really.
But I think that if you like fps gaming and enjoy looting in general, this game might be something you'd like. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! I either have to give it the rating "pretty boring" or "extremely annoying".
Currently the game has me run back and forth through surprisingly smallish maps, yet still big enough to make walking from one end to the other a chore. The normal walk speed is at times annoyingly slow. You can sprint, but whenever you do that you usually get immediately assaulted by a bunch of small critters you happened to pass. The quests didn't really wow me so far. I was happy when they gave me access to the bulletin board for quests, but apparently the first quest on that board send me to the guy I just came from. Hurrah. Then I have the problem that the game does point you in whatever direction you need to go for your quest, which is completely useless seeing that I still have to check the map every other step just to find out if I have to turn left at that cliff right at that cliff go up that cliff or have to go a fourth way that wasn't immediately obvious (neither on the map, nor in the game). Whenever I stand still for longer than a few seconds some critter or midget or whatever suddenly jumps me in the back and whenever I turn around to kill something else immediately jumps me in the back. One time I almost died because a bunch of flying critters suddenly swooped down from out of nowhere and ate up my shield and half of my health in one swoop. I am terribly afraid of shooting anything that's not currently aware of me because whenever I do that I instantly cause another wave of annoying critters to spawn, so I kind of try to avoid that. Most of the times it is unavoidable though. At first I was like "Man, for a game that has a gazillion weapons it sure doesn't give me a lot" but now I have like 12 pistols, all of which look pretty much the same and shoot pretty much the same, except that the one is apparently 3% more accurate than the other and that one can carry a bit more ammo or has a bit less recoil or some shit. I don't really want to equip each and go hunting just to find out which one kills slightly better when I can just use the two named guns I got through quests. Now I pretty much just sell anything that doesn't have a colored name, whatever that means in the first place. I also got the shit murdered out of me by some dude who apparently has a gun that is gunnier than mine. If this game is ever going to make me actually grind I am so not ever playing it again. I've played for a few hours before it became too annoying and I currently don't have much desire to play it much further. Maybe it's just the "tutorial area" and maybe it picks up after that but I'm not sure if I can be arsed to sit through that. Currently it feels like it picked the worst from the RPG, FPS and MMO genres and mashed that into a game. I'm also not too hot to try out coop, since, as I understand it, it's essentially single player with everything times two/three/four and that is a thought that is too scary to carry further. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Alec on October 29, 2009, 01:28:34 AM Not sure what got everyone excited about this game in the first place?
For reference I'm not a big Diablo fan, but Diablo III seems appealing to me and I can understand why people like it. I guess I'm pretty allergic to grinding in general. (unless its pacing out some awesome story) Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Hideous on October 29, 2009, 01:45:23 AM The only part of this game I don't like is the final boss, who is tedious and annoying, but otherwise it's fucking brilliant and I don't see why anyone would not enjoy it.
For the record, I hated Diablo. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! I might have to stay up for this one... Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Core Xii on October 29, 2009, 08:10:11 AM I wanted to like it, since it's similar to Fallout 3, but I just can't bring myself.
First of all, it uses the Unreal Engine, and I hate it. It feels laggy and unresponsive, the graphics look like shit and I can't even turn vsync on! The mouse sensitivity option is too discrete, one setting is too high and the next is too low. The menus inexplicably sometimes require keyboard input, like pressing Enter (couldn't have picked a key further away from WASD than that) where a mouse click should suffice. Then there's the annoying, completely arbitrary "level" system where an enemy of higher level than you takes like five clips and all your health to take down, but the exact same enemy of lower level goes down more easily. There aren't enough damn bullets, I find myself spending all my ammo on a group of enemies without them dropping enough to resupply, having to trek all the way to the start of the area to buy some more. Every enemy has a weapon with infinite bullets, but you can't always pick their stuff up, they just don't drop any. The drop system is stupid anyway, in that it drops exactly what you need at that point in time! Low on health? You get health drops. Low on sniper ammo? You get sniper ammo drops. You find a weapon of a new type, like a shotgun, that you didn't have before, and every item drop for the next 15 minutes is shotgun ammo. It's just stupid. And it's mindless, there doesn't appear to be any story whatsoever. Something about some vault with treasure or something, can't get much more generic than that without being arcade. Just a bunch of quests strung together with very little continuity. And every quest is "go here, kill some guys, come back". Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Melly on October 29, 2009, 08:24:09 AM As far as I heard, you don't play this game for the story, but I can see how it can be aggravating to people that enjoy that.

Post by: skaldicpoet9 on October 29, 2009, 10:17:23 AM I guess I'm pretty allergic to grinding in general. (unless its pacing out some awesome story) I guess it depends on what you consider grinding. While you can keep leveling and becoming more powerful of course, I gain satisfaction in simply blasting enemies to bits and making the most out of the great combat system. There has been no grind for me, I do a few quests and turn them in and that's it and the leveling goes really, really quick. I have played plenty of mmos and the like and seriously the grind here is minimal to none. The real draw of this game is the sense of panic that sets in at the onslaught of a horde of enemies beating your broken face into the ground. edit: I just talked to a few people that I know who are playing and they pretty much expressed the same sentiment when it comes to the leveling. They, like myself, have not spent but perhaps a quest or two on any given level. I am level 18 right now and I would say that on average I spent thirty minutes or so until my next level. Unless taking thirty minutes to level is considered a grind, I don't see much of a grind here at all. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! It stopped being so annoying (mostly) but it's still an overall pretty bland game. I kind of dislike that the player appears to be the only person bound to the silly RPG rules while everything else operates on normal FPS rules.
I'm fine with the whole FPS with RPG aspects thing, but it feels a bit like I'm playing a game and I'm the only one who keeps playing by the rules of the game. It's not a bad game, but also not a very good one. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Kekskiller on October 30, 2009, 10:14:37 AM After 3 hours of playing I have to say it's one of the most stylish FPS' I ever played! But to get the stylish look in realtime, I had to change the resolution to 640x400 to see it properly working :( And even this resolution has it's slowdowns. Shitty!
The overall gameplay has it's flaws (for example, I've choosen the sniper char but I somehow need a lot of room to kill even the smallest beasts -> they're fucking fast and close to you. However, it's fun to get new stuff, do some quests... It's really like Diablo 2 on FPS mode, just much more cool and good-looking. Cool thing is, every sniper weapon has it's own scope! Sniping is really fun in this game. Does anyone else has problems with the inventory? I mean you can't even run while having it opened; no pause system? That is really... let's say I'm used to run away from my enemy while browsing my inventory for better weapons (that was Stalker, I guess). Item comparison is somehow uncomfortable... I like the game but a lot could be done to make it better, interface and performance-wise. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: mark on October 30, 2009, 11:09:58 AM Overall I am happy with this game so far (3 hours in) very nice looking (those rocks...love them).
I do however think that they somehow messed up making it less of a port, which was why it was delayed :/ the inventory isn't good for PC users, can't drag stuff, feels kinda clunky moving weapons...and I need icons :( Pressing Enter is also one of the big problems, I mean, it's so far away from wasd, and waay too far from the mouse...why must it be the main button to use when buying/selling/accepting/completing. I have yet to try the online features out, but I am being told that you have to forward ports and stuff, not really a good idea when it's mainly an online game, local hosting, fine but you really should make it easy. Can't wait to play this some more. @Kekskiller I am pretty sure you get 4 inventory slots not too far into the game, just make sure your best weapons are in those ;) and if you really need to pause the game, play offline, then it pauses in menus. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Well, I played it offline - maybe it's a stupid bug? I got attacked while selling stuff :-\ . Oh and I really hate the "soldier" type of enemy which moves around, blasts with an assault rifle. Can't snipe 'em! Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Kekskiller on October 30, 2009, 01:51:54 PM Will try online mode right now. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Dom2D on October 30, 2009, 02:05:23 PM Warning: bad english, it's friday, I'm tired.
I played a bunch with a friend in coop. It's great fun for lots of reason but its flaws appear when the initial wow factor fades out. It gave me the same feeling I had with Diablo; I kept being excited about the loot and the skills, but I kept wondering "why am I doing this again?" as the game gets into a cycle of kill/upgrade/kill. The new weapons and equipment aren't that exciting after a while. There's very little variety in the enemies and their spawn zones, too. The world itself is gorgeous, but like in most MMOs you spend so much time in a zone that you get tired of it after a while. The thing is, despite the hidden flaws, I'll keep playing it with that friend, simply because the game works well in coop. A few mechanics create interactions between us, plus we talk and shout and laugh as we kill a bunch of Skags or ride around in the car blasting bandits with the rocket launcher. It nears Left4Dead in creating lots of fun to be had between players. The loot and the quests are just motivation to keep us having fun. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who plans on playing alone; then it can be a lame FPS. I don't think you'll get the excitement of the Single player of Call of Duty 4 or Valve games in Borderlands. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Radnom on October 31, 2009, 08:48:44 PM 28.7 hours of borderlands logged, 2 days and 4 hours after it came out. I've just finished the main quest.
I absolutely love this game! I played it through online with a friend, we did pretty much all the side quests, so it must have taken around 20 hours to beat nearly all the side missions in co-op.. but that was going through it at a really fast pace, not reading anything, not checking everything etc. I'm level... 36 I think. I also have another level 25 character. I love that if you do the side quests you never have to grind, and it all balances fairly nicely. Vehicles are a bit crap though, there's only one type of them, and with two possible guns, and both of them are completely useless. Rocket launchers in general in Borderlands are also really crap. I reckon it's just as good single player as multiplayer, because in single player you get to follow the story, you get to keep all the loot, work at your own pace etc. The storyline missions only give out one unique weapon to one person in the team at the end of them, so if you're not that person then too bad (unless you're playing with someone nice enough to share). Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Don Andy on November 02, 2009, 03:32:09 AM Dammit, everytime the game starts to grow on me it finds a cheap death to kill me with.
Its favorite method: Throwing a bunch of bandits and bruisers on top of me, having me on my last straw when they are finally all dead and then have a psycho midget kill me from behind and then just DROP DEAD so I can't use the second wind. This happens all. the freaking. time. Also usually JUST before the next New-U station. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Inanimate on November 02, 2009, 09:29:31 PM Just got Borderlands from my pals! Played a little bit of single player, was really fun. InanimateRZ if you guys want to know!~
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: xerus on November 03, 2009, 02:24:09 AM I played some Borderlands tonight multiplayer style. It's a lot of fun. Hopefully a patch hits soon that fixes some of the crazy bugs and such.

Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: YagerX on November 04, 2009, 01:35:09 PM Sorry I'm just excited to play with other people. Single player gets a little monotonous.
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Kekskiller on November 07, 2009, 02:51:08 AM Borderlands gets boring. I mean in the end it's another MMO with some actioney key parts. You have to travel thousands of miles for NOTHING while leaving ammo in every head you encounter. I also dislike all these "can only be killed with criticals" type of enemies. It's just annoying after a while and I (now) rather prefer a good'ol shooter with nothing but a gun in your hand. Makes me feel much better than having enemies which blow you up just becauece they're 1 level higher than you.
I better play Torchlight and Stalker. A more distinctive seperation. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: piyush86 on November 15, 2009, 03:04:35 PM I think the art style is cool...may be inspired from codehunters (http://www.codehunters.tv/)
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Zest on November 15, 2009, 04:05:04 PM I think the art style is cool...may be inspired from codehunters (http://www.codehunters.tv/) Hmm. That was a really stylish little film, but it seemed more like a teaser for a grand epic story than an actual short film. I could definitely see comparisons being drawn between it and Borderlands, though- they even have similar body types (compare the girl in the short to the Siren, or the big beefy dude with Brick). Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: BoxedLunch on November 17, 2009, 03:08:03 PM Borderlands is sweet! I play it with one of my friends and we enjoy every midget-killin' claptrap dancing minute of it. The only problem with it is that the story goes down the tubes later in the game.
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Kekskiller on January 03, 2010, 10:33:50 AM Anyone still playing it? I know, I'm a bit late.
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: BoxedLunch on January 03, 2010, 10:41:51 AM yup! great game, i got in october, beat it in november. Started on my second playthrough then. And right now i'm playing my friends file with him. To think, I'm still using only mordecai. :giggle:
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: sugarbeard on January 03, 2010, 11:00:44 AM Yeah Mordecai is my boy too. Haven't tried anyone else yet, though I only got it for Christmas so there's time for that. Sitting at around level 32 right now I believe.
Haven't gotten a chance to try co-op but I'm really looking forward to that. Anyone playing it on PS3? Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: BoxedLunch on January 03, 2010, 11:10:14 AM i do. but i can't connect it to the internet. :'(
Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Kekskiller on January 03, 2010, 11:14:18 AM I played with the Mordecai first (pretty overpowered this guy, but fucking cool) until level 37 or so. I have a soldier level 17 now but playing him feels... weak. I mean as a Mordecai/Gunslinger you can kill pretty damn everyone really fast with just one ot two shots. Getting somewhat harder with a soldier.
Also, I'm playing on PC. Anyone able to play with me? Gamespy id is "gayksos". Almost everyone I met so far plays it like Diablo II - just rushing. That sucks somehow. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Tanner on January 03, 2010, 11:58:33 AM not when you're roland or brick
my roland char only uses revolvers to stay true to his namesake :noir: Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: TeeGee on January 04, 2010, 03:54:21 AM Also, I'm playing on PC. You seem to be from EU so time zones shouldn't be a problem. I can use my lvl30 siren or roll a new character. Usually I'm available after 8pm during the week. My GameSpy handle is TomGrochowiak. But you can send a PM here at TIGSource. I have a pretty high F5 rate. Title: Re: The Official TIGS Borderlands Thread! Post by: Melly on April 22, 2010, 11:02:06 AM Huh, looks like I won't have to resurect this thread TOO hard.
So, I recently got Borderlands on a Steam sale, and I've been enjoying it by myself, but obviously it's not the same as with people. So, who's up for some skag mass-murdering? |
