That's up to them, and I hope they do give him some money. But it is also business, and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. Because they don't have to. See: http://www.gzip.org/zlib/zlib_license.html

They don't have to, from the zlib license (which is basically completely free). But Erin has recently consolidated the library to just things he claims copyright for, possibly with the intention of dual licensing future versions.
