Title: Swimming Under Clouds Preview
Post by: ChevyRay on November 06, 2009, 04:44:22 AM
Some (many?) of you may have heard of the artist Orioto (http://orioto.deviantart.com/) who has gotten quite popular because of his fantastic (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Zebes-cave-141160979) video (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Yoshi-s-Playground-107538584) game (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Another-World-132647260) related (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Toxic-Planet-123100963) artwork (http://orioto.deviantart.com/art/Lava-Ballad-112966351). Well he's released an exclusive preview on an indie game he's been working on with a programmer, so let's talk about it. Lots of warm colours, though I'd like to see it in motion (EDIT: trailer (http://www.digitalgamestv.fr/video-35929-digitaltv.html)), seems kinda cool. Click the images for full-size.

The story goes that a little girl has to leave for the city. As she’s packing, she accidently drops her pet fish, smashing the bowl, and thus seemingly killing the fish. However, the fish is far from dead, and begins an epic journey to get back to its owner. You play as the fish in question as you make your way through surreal, dream like landscapes full of physics based puzzles and platform sections.

Quote
While this may sound a little weird, it’s all made possible through the water which the fish has surrounded itself in. This creates a platformer with a liquid protagonist, so although you’ll be guiding the fish, it moves as you imagine a bubble of water would if it could hold a form.

Quote
Parallels to Braid will obviously be drawn, and that’s a compliment to Piece of Pie Studios and Orioto himself. But in reality it plays more like N+, or a physics based version of ‘Splosion Man.

Oh, there is a trailer, too!

Looks pretty cool in motion. I'm actually kinda surprised that no comparisons to Gish were made, but either way, physics games are always fun.

That's looking pretty cool. The Gish comparisons are vaguely there with the base gameplay mechanic of moving around a liquidy character, but visually and thematically it looks pretty different.

Apologies for bumping a dead thread, but I missed this the first time around.

I'm the programmer on this little project, and this is as good of an opportunity as any to say hello, so...hello! It's pretty cool to see our game mentioned on these forums.

Hey yac, welcome to TIG :)

Yeah, this game's still on my watch list. Any cool inside bits of information or teasers you can give us? Any new/updated videos or anything would be cool too.

Good luck with the game, and cheers!

Thanks ChevyRay.

Well, it's not exactly new, but I put up an older video (http://www.pieceofpiestudios.com/2009/12/24/merry-christmas/) (pre-art) a few weeks back. It showed off some of the tech underneath, and what things looked like before a proper artist got involved.

I don't know what you would consider cool, but if you've got any questions, I'll do my best to answer what I can.
