Title: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: C.A. Silbereisen on December 02, 2009, 05:40:39 PM This is a fun little game by increpare. It's considerably "lighter" in subject matter than most of his other games (I've played anyway). Gameplay-wise it's a kind of gambling collect-em all game, like Pokemon meets Casino Kid, but good.
Basically, you compete against various opponents in dice rolling duels and if you win, you get your opponent's die. Each die has some unique properties. I just had a fun time with this and finished it with a score 67, which I reckon isn't too good. ;) Here's a link: http://ded.increpare.com/~locus/OfDice/ (http://ded.increpare.com/~locus/OfDice/) Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: TheDustin on December 02, 2009, 05:58:59 PM I literally sunk over 200 hours into the Pokemon TCG for Gameboy, so I'm checkin this shit out. I haven't played a match yet, but one of the NPC's just said "I'm thinking of leaving this group. I believe I should be doing other things... better things with my life." :D

Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: Epitaph64 on December 02, 2009, 06:09:42 PM Seems like it could really be a great game, but it needs customization, like building a team of dice to do battle :D
Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: TheDustin on December 02, 2009, 07:06:59 PM Just beat it. A very meta take on TCG's; instead of half the battle being 'deck' construction, it is the game. Leaving the duels out of your hand is akin to two tournament-dwelling MtG dudes playing an optimal game. This reveals that luck and metagaming are your sole mechanics. Which makes me all confused, because I still enjoyed playing it. :D
Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: C.A. Silbereisen on December 02, 2009, 07:14:43 PM Yeah, it's a game that fakes gameplay, more or less. And does it incredibly well. :D
That said, there is a tiny bit of strategy in what die you choose, but still. Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: TheDustin on December 02, 2009, 07:21:09 PM Which makes the casino setting fitting, given that "luck and metagaming" is all there is to the games there. :shrug2:

Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: Hangedman on December 02, 2009, 08:52:02 PM An interesting deconstruction. Neatly made, too.
Still, the super sparse pixel art can sometimes be hard on the eyes, especially when there are large gaps in the moving sprite. Not really a problem here, but with some of the other stuff... Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: Alec S. on December 02, 2009, 10:20:58 PM Yeah, the combination of the addictiveness of a game of chance and of a game of collection, combined with the added inclusion of some sort of skill based interaction in the meta-gaming made this an interesting game.
Title: Re: Platonic Archetypes Of Dice Post by: PGGB on December 03, 2009, 09:17:07 AM This was really nice. I like increpare's scarce spritings and the music usually complements this very successfully.
Got 42 which make 10 lost battle. I saw myself using Halftone (111666) a lot even if I had the feared die. This die will get at least 50/50 chances in almost every scenario, often more. I also liked the all or nothing mentality. |
