Title: BeeStruction
Post by: Theotherguy on December 16, 2009, 03:07:24 PM

Welcome to the world of BeeStruction, a game which puts you in control of a swarm of killer scavenger bees, wreaking havoc on the environment and then using their bloody corpses to build up your hive in an eternal quest for more of the elusive 'cherry nectar.'

The main gameplay mechanic is sort of a combination of Pikmin and Katamari Damacy. The player starts with relatively few bees, and has to send them out to destroy plants, animals, and structures and drag them back to the hive. The more dead bodies piled on the hive, the more bees the player can support, and the bigger objects he/she can take on. The game is extraordinarily violent.

A trailer is available at

This game was developed by Game Creation Society,  a student-run organization at Carnegie Mellon University whose sole purpose is to develop small PC games in the course of a semester, and to teach the process of working on large video game projects. All aspects of the game development process are covered, from design to art, to programming and even marketing and distribution.

It looks really neat! But, as usual with XNA-games, it craches on me after less than a minute.

Uh oh. May I ask what the circumstances of the crash were?

Sure, I can give you any information you want. But (I think) this always happens to me with XNA(?) based games, so I'm not sure if there's anything you can do.

After some testing, I have found that the game always crashes at the end of the flower-level. Edit: After all the flowers have been attached to the nest.

And it's a hard crash, where Windows wants to send an error report to Microsoft.

I'm sorry, I haven't encountered that error before, I'll be doing some extensive testing to see if I can duplicate it. Thanks.

No problem, I hope you can figure it out :)
Tell me if I can supply you with any additional information. If I get in the mood later, I'll try to reinstall some Windows-stuff.

Hey guise! Nice to see stuff from the ol' alma Matter.

I guess I'll have to give it a shot when I get home. One suggestion though: the health UI doesn't need to be big to the point of obscuring the art. Just find a place next to the side, or maybe it's not entirely necessary at all?

Hey Sifu!

That isn't a display of the health. It is actually a display of how many bees you are sending. I guess it kind of did get in the way :(

This game is insane.

Though I ran into trouble while assimilating the robot... (http://www.flickr.com/photos/34387483@N00/4192356182/)

I really want to play this game, but it just won't work for me. (XNA, yay).

The game won't install. I get an error message telling me to install Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.Pipeline version 3.1.0.0 in my GAC. It then tells me to contact myself (the system administrator).

As far as i can tell Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.Pipeline should not be a required for running the game:

Quote
The XNA Framework Content Pipeline is a set of tools that allows Visual Studio and XNA Studio "as the key design point around organizing and consuming 3D content

But even if it is required, I'm not sure how to install it? I'm pretty sure I already have installed all the things required by your readme.

Sorry, that last build created a dependency with the XNA content manager which is now resolved. A new version will be up in about 10 minutes which does not have this dependency.

Now the installation works, so that's good.

But the game still crashes at the end of the flower level.

Sorry, I can't seem to replicate this crash.
