Are the monsters supposed to chase you like in ski free? because mine just stood still next to the trees. You should also add in some rainbow colored ramps and a snowboarder guy.

Player / General / Re: Independent Game Developers You Should Hate
|
on: October 16, 2009, 07:23:40 PM

Yeah I hate a lot of indie developers to, but most of them are from completely different incidents unrelated to indie games in any way.
Derek Yu I'm starting with this guy because I hate him the least. The only reason I hate him at all is because back when we were growing up in the same neighborhood, he used to never let me be captian of our treehouse club. He always made me be the first mate. He said it was the second best position and if anything ever happened to him, I would be the captain. It sounded fine at first, but after a couple years of doing all of his homework and poking the little straw into his sunny-d pouches while all the other members of the club were out playing kickball and having fun, i started to get a little bit irritated. Come on derek, why couldn't you have let me be captain for one day, would that have killed you? It actually may have because at one point I was so mad that I probably would have ordered him to jump off a bridge if I was the captain.
Phil Fish I hate this guy for the simple reason that during junior high, he was me and derek's bully. In case you are wondering, I was able to patch things up with derek and remain friends during junior high, mainly because he was a tough kid and could fight most bullies off for me. And he had a nintendo. Anyway, despite being one of the toughest kids around, the one bully he could not defend me from was Phil Fish. Now I'm not saying derek couldn't have beaten Phil up in a head on battle, but phil didn't bully just by dunking heads in a swirling toilet or pulling underwear up over top of heads. No. He used words. Lot's of words. Mean ones. He was able to reduce derek to a bucket of tears before he could even throw the first punch, usually by making rude remarks about his mother or his (very sick) old dog (who eventually passed away due to an illness vets previously thought only existed in sci-fi movies). And then phil fish would bully us so bad that i had to go to the hospital one time. And the only reason he chose me to bully on was because I used to wear a 'stupid red cylinder hat' to school (because the strange shape of my head would not allow a regular baseball cap.)
Jon Blow I think it's pretty obvious why I hate this guy. Whenever we got to highschool, I was trying out for the knowledge master's debate team, and he was somehow (probably from a deal with the devil) able to take the position of knowledge master captain away from me. I was so furious with him that I could hardly contain my anger. I think I may have even called him the a-word at some point. I probably wouldn't have been so mad, but I wanted to be a captain of something all of my life and I never got closer than with the knowledge master's debate team. But the position I did get was, you probably guessed it, knowledge master's water boy. Image that . Water boy. Just because they said my knowledge about spider man comics and old giligan's island reruns wasn't useful to the team. Why do they need a water boy, all they do is press that little buzzer. It isn't even a sport. Dang you, Jon Blow, dang you straight to dang. Now, i'll, never be a captain of anything (unless I am able to finish my 20th sub and I get promoted to submarine captain (and get a free sandwhich)).
I think I'm done writing for now but there are a lot more people I hate. If I have some free time later I'll tell you about when I was Pixel's roommate in college.

Developer / Technical / Re: Recommendations for game programming books?

engine programmers are almost never game programmers (or at least never actually finish a game) -- i don't get this need to code your own engine from scratch as a start to making a game. especially in the indie sphere...
Did you mean engine programmers are almost never game designers? The way you said it doen't really make any sense. And how can you not see when you would want to make your own engine? And especially in the indie sphere? Most game engines that you would download would be from some sort of game that has already been made like a 3d fps engine or a platforming engine. If an indie game is trying to be completely different and original you would almost have to write your own engine. Unless you are specifically talking about graphics libraries or something, in which case, you are right, writing a graphics engine for each game is probably a bad idea, same with going into a cave, mining for silicon, forge your own computer, and writing an operating system for one game. And even if you could get an engine similar to something that you need, I don't know how you could think that there is no reason to write your own. To me, that is like telling a 3d modeler there is no reason to model your own tree because there are already ones people made for free online.

I got a similar email from Brothersoft, it must be the same type of thing. The weird thing was that the email made it sound like I amde an account and submitted it to their site or something.
And Softpedia grabbed all of my releases too. Seems pretty nice to me, freely hosting some of my stuff. Linked to my site as well.

it has to do with people who think they have to read every thread on the board and don't know that they can skip over the ones they don't like.

On the second level in the original mario, if you jump on top of the roof and run the whole way across the screen to the right passing the final exit tube, you can take a warp tube to almost any world you want.
Amazing. Any advice on defeating the cyberdemon? Have you heard a word I said? Warp tunnels. You don't need to fight him if you are going to warp right past him. You can just leave him alone, it doesn't matter. And besides, (spoiler alert) the princess is in another castle anyway.

I've kind of noticed that same thing when it comes to parts of physics. Especially when things dealing with light particles/waves, it seems to me like there is a lot of stuff that they are assuming(making up), just because they don't want to admit they haven't figured it out yet.

California's got to deal with their $40,000,000,000 deficit somehow.
Make that $39,999,999,800 now. Plan's working already.

oh man, that happens to me every now and then. if i'm working on something late at night and can't get it to work quite right, it is really hard for me to stop even though i know that if i come back to it later when i'm well-rested the answer to the problem will come to me clearly. luckily im a compulsive saver and have a backup of my project almost every day, so i can just go back to before i screwed everything up if i need to.

yeah, i learned programming on my own first, and i am taking classes now and it is terrible. it could just be my specific classes, but if i didn't learn to program on my own before the courses i took, i would definitely hate it. they somehow manage to suck every ounce of fun possible out of coding. i do suggest to learn on your own first, or at least do your own thing while taking the class (like reading articles online and writing programs that aren't boring or completely pointless).
also, you should also probably buy your own books instead of trying to use the textbooks they require for the class. again, this could just be my experience but i have Never seen a good programming textbook in a course. when i was learning c++ i picked up a couple books online for only a couple dollars each and they were both many times better than the intro to programming textbook i had to buy years later at $100+.

I hope in the future somebody uncovers this thread on a computer archive buried deep within the rubble of the old world and laugh uncontrollably when they read "what else new is there to add to consoles?"
At the same time thinking "Oh man, at least now there's nothing else to add." Why would you need consoles in the future when you could be out riding your hover board?
