i agree with all the criticism so far. they game feels caught inbetween a profound art game with a message and a cheap flash game trying to win hits and clicks.
people have already been giving you some good criticism, so i think i'll just let you know that, even if for only 10 seconds, i was touched by the game. its a simple concept, but it very clearly illustrates how we push love away with our own pain or anger. i like how you super imposed the psychological mechanic with the familiar game mechanic, because i instinctively have this 'shoot' reflex in the same way that we can push people away with out meaning to, but once i began to realize what i was doing i stopped shoot and then i lost, but i won. that was a nice switch. and i really like how the title relates to the game.
there are a lot of ways you could improve your game, but it still moved me.
the suggestion i will give is to make the game more personal. oh and make the 'hit' sounds subtler

id choose solid red block. x and skull are too literal, the black boxes of the checker board just seem like transparency, and ans white doesnt usually denote death. the red one is simple, and the same color as the lava. i might also fill the box only half way with red, and have it bubble like the the lava as well.
ps i really like your game!

oh shit!, thats nuts bad sector! i think your work is very cute alex! ive been working on a handful of topdown projects. its definitely awesome that you can rotate the sprites instead of reanimating them! but its also difficult to make them look good. i would say give the hands some back and forth movement. ive been working on the intro cutscene for my solarcade, im about half way done...

Just a quick mockup of a blocking sprite. Also, I made the skin color of the face and hands the same. I dunno, I'm sure somebody could do better. jpegeyeburn! but constructively, i would remove the outline of the shield where it overlaps with the dwarf

i dislike every war game based off real life. war is fucking not cool, and it disgusts me how they portray war in videogames. just make shit up, or use mythology. im tired of one of our peoples being portrayed as good guys and one as bad guys.
hypocritically, day of defeat is pretty much my favorite fps that ive played (solely for its game mechanics)
i also dislike the smash bro games, except for super mario wars

wow! sparky, hempuli and mdk, all amazing pieces! i think the tree most definitely needs to keep its colorful jacket. having spent its entire life in the forest, it would understandably be a bit fashion challanged

deadeye, that sounds pretty good! the only thing i could think of was that the ending note was a bit too uplifting for what im assuming is supposed to be frightening event.
