I'm an Obama supporter, but I hate Pokemon... now I'm torn. Hating little weird creatures and supporting a politician? I don't understand you.

EDIT: haha, oops. Don't mind the little redundant bend on the left-side there. I forgot to multiply the cost of angle movements by √2 Oh. I figured he was totally in the lead by then, thanks to awesome pathfinding, so he was doing spins and shit because he knew that the others wouldn't catch up anyway.

so although I know this is against the principles of modern game design, I really really suggest you at least take a glance at the manual AWESOME is against the principles of modern game design. This looks real cool anyway. Downloaded, and I'll hopefully have some time for playing it later today.

Well, my current solution to the problem seems to work well, so I'm not going to change the way things work, plus this solution works perfectly for the way I have my entities logic running. Yeah. What I was almost trying to say was that is was probably really working just fine when you set stuff to nil. You just don't instantly see the results of that. Not that it's necessarily a better solution than what you're currently doing anyway or anything

Garbage collection routines don't generally run all the time. They're likely to be triggered by such things as certain amounts of memory being used (which seems to be the case with Lua). So an object won't be freed once it's unreachable, but the next time the garbage collection kicks in after it has become unreachable.
It seems you can tell the garbage collector in Lua to start whenever you want it to, which might be useful for debugging purposes certain special cases. In general I'd say you should be able to just ignore it and let it do its thing though.

Bah, I want to play this tonight, but I'm sitting here waiting for a reply from Steam support. Since (I think) I live in a different country from my credit card company, Steam rejects my card unless I email them each time. Has it been like that like forever and such, or? Steam's rejecting my card now, and I've never had a problem with it before (and the last time I used it at Steam was this Saturday (LEGO Batman!(Awesome!(Yes!)))), so like if that's a pretty recent thing for you too I'll just blame Steam or something for now and try again later. I want something to blame at least :\

For a very long time I've just used SciTE for editing and dsss on the command line for compiling, and it worked fine. I've recently switched to using CodeBlocks (for editing and building) because the lure of an IDE proved too strong after all. It works fine, I guess, though code completion is very very patchy. I've heard good things about Descent too, so if that does the trick for you I guess there's no reason to switch. Yeah, I've been pretty happy with Descent. Although I haven't been able to make it format my code exactly the way I like it, and it seems it won't build stuff for me (but does parse things to check for syntax errors). Building isn't much of an issue since it's a lot more straightforward than with C++ stuff anyway, and I can run DSSS from Eclipse in order to get output from there in the Eclipse console. Code completion works proper good and pressing F3 to jump to the declaration of whatever is real handy (and possibly works better than with Java stuff in Eclipse as far as standard library stuff is concerned). And I'm familiar with and like Eclipse anyway, so His marketing sucks though, so that's probably why D isn't as widespread yet as it should be Yeah. Something like that. I've come across the language a rather infrequently throughout the last few years. Hardly ever by running into people who actually used it, so I've sort of assumed that there's something horribly wrong with it. That I finally got around to checking it out is partly thanks to you mentioning it in some thread here recently. So like thanks to you.

Oh, D! muku, I'd really rather like to know what you use for editing code, compiling and building stuff and such. I've been using D for, eh, 4 days or so now, and I'm not sure what options I've missed out on and so on. I'm currently using the Descent plugin for Eclipse, DSSS and the DMD 1.030 compiler. I wanted to use something 2.0, but it seemed that a lot of other stuff available was only compatible with 1.0. Using Derelict for SDL and OpenGL stuff. It's really pleasant to work with. I'm sure I'd be interested in tutorials and stuff. There's a chance I can write something as well.

They don't actually have Doom II for download there, do they? Seems they don't. Abandonware is technically illegal anyway, but those sites typically seem to get by with just removing games that are protected by the ESA or similar. I'll have to admit to owing many hours of good entertainment to Abandonia, HOTU and their ilk. Yeah, I know. And I checked to find the "No go!" thing on Doom 2. Just found it odd that Greg-Anims said that he had just gotten Doom 2 from there like. HotU is/was awesome. Like, it would've been pretty awesome if it was only the lists of games with reviews and not the downloads. Lots of great stuff to discover there.

I'd imagine Indie Games is not the right sub-forum for this one.
They don't actually have Doom II for download there, do they? It's pretty easy and straightforward to get a legit copy of that.
But yeah. It's a nice site.

I don't think that is the case at all, because it's not just people who have been rejected who are a part of this petition. And you also don't see this type of petition arising for Microsoft or Nintendo, even though there are a large number of people who have been rejected from those, because those two give the sense that they've looked at the game, and they provide feedback, whereas Steam doesn't to my knowledge even acknowledge that they have received and will look over a submission; they have no real method of submission for independent developers. Yeah, that may well be true. Maybe just a first impression thing. What with it being called "Get our games on Steam!" and starting with "We are a group of independent game developers who have so far been unable to get our games released via Valve's Steam service." and etc. As for the Microsoft and Nintendo thing. That'd be for games made specifically for their (closed) platforms? That's a lot of potential problems dealt with right there. Not gonna pretend I'm one to tell anyone how to run their business, but it's not very hard to dream up reasons why "do like Nintendo and Microsoft do" won't necessarily work out awesomely. Dunno though. Not that it wouldn't be cool to have a system in place for these things or anything.

You might want to take a look at Berkley sockets or something. And maybe something like this. My first attempt at networking involved putting an executable in a shared folder, and have it communicate by reading/writing a file in the app directory. It crashed not infrequently, but it worked and was, as such, a fantastic success ;P I made some split-screen stuff with The Games Factory with a similar approach once. It's not a very good approach

Everything else aside, currently I'd rather buy my games from Steam than from somewhere else. So as a general thing, I'd like more stuff on Steam. And like I can see how it'd be frustrating to not have any idea why they won't sell your game. Being good, or playable for that matter, is not a criteria that is met by all the games currently on Steam. It's easy to get the impression that they let people put rather borked stuff on there as long as there's some other big company involved. Not sure how I feel about that petition though... The key thing with this petition is it isn't "hey Valve, there's some cool guys out there making funky games" it's "get OUR games onto Steam. Love, The Developers". To which, if I were Valve, my response would be simply "oh shut it and fuck off". Whereas the former scenario, I might perk up an ear. Oh wait. That's pretty much how I feel about the petition, actually.
