1  Player / Games / Recommend me some Mac games! on: May 10, 2013, 08:44:51 PM
My desk and my desktop are all packed. I am sitting in a chair with my MacBook on my lap. Recommend me some free or cheap Mac games that I can play effectively without a mouse. Steam is fine. 2D platformers are awesome, but not required. I've already played Cave Story.

You may be going a bit overboard with the tile detailing. Even the simplest tiles look like they're part of some intricate clockwork machine. You need to have the mech equivalent of an ordinary sidewalk in there.

Also, absolutely everything has black-and-yellow caution stripes on it. I'm not sure what they're trying to caution me against. Maybe "GTFO of this entire area before you get stepped on by a mech." :D

I love your pixeling style in general. It just needs some less busy elements for contrast, I think. I look forward to playing it!

What can I put in the controls.ini to use the arrow keys instead of WASD? Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere...

Any more news on this? And anyone else have this thing where it runs at literally 2FPS? I found it in a RockPaperShotgun post from last year and wanted to give it a try, but it doesn't seem to be playable...
5  Community / Announcements / Re: Space Rubbish + Dino Run SE MegaBundle is go! on: July 05, 2011, 05:27:17 PM
Ia this really all the discussion Space Rubbish got? What a shame. Sad I bought it yesterday, and it's fantastic. I hope people weren't scared off by the non-freeness.

My only complaint is that the lives system in campaign mode doesn't seem to fit. Unless you're playing hardcore/going for high scores, you'll probably just want to quit and continue rather than accept the death/game over, so why jump through the hoops? I'd like to see an option to turn off "Lives" and go straight to "Continue".

Also, a question. The shop and briefing screens say that upgrading shield intensity will let you absorb life forms; with two upgrades under my belt, though, I don't see it happening even with the little orange vampire things. I can stun them with a shield pulse, but that's it. Am I doing it wrong, or do I need more upgrade levels?

i do keep forgetting how important tigsource is actually -- i suspect that in 100 years, when people read about the history of indie games, i'll be remembered as a) the guy who named minecraft
You named Minecraft?

Way to bump a 4 month old topic?
Well, you don't want to have multiple threads for the same game, right?

Be nice if there was more than three words, tho...

So why do you think I'm kneeling, and bending forwards, and I have that look on my face.

Whoops, said the loud bit quiet and the quiet bit loud.

It was all loud bits.
Man keep your loud bits to yourself
9  Player / General / Re: Interactive fiction and it's place in Indie Games. Could it possibly resurface? on: October 17, 2010, 12:13:05 AM
I got myself in a really unnerving financial situation and I guess I'm wondering, if a text-game project like that could help me, eventually with that. Either on a donation-basis or "pay as much or as little as you want" for a game thingie...
What do you think?
Could a interactive-fiction/text based game possibly sell?
I think your game sounds like a really neat idea, and I hope it works out! But I've got to warn you, getting into indie game design as a way to escape debt is not a very good bet. Sad If you're taking other measures as well, have a regular job, etc, then it couldn't hurt to try this and see what comes of it; but, historically, there's a lot more indie developers who either flop or make very modest profits than ever become really successful, so don't pin any hopes on it.

A lot like authors, really. Well, maybe not quite that bad...

If the problem is signatures, ban signatures until you have 10 posts?
Makes sense. Or just block them from displaying.

You could also block Google from indexing profile pages. It'd stop the spammers from making money, but unless they realize it, it might not stop them from trying...
I recall somebody suggesting that there be a little mini-game that you have to beat in order to get into the forums. Could be something simple like a little brick-breaker game, or something more original. Heck, it would make a great compo: design a browser-compatible game that takes under a minute to beat so we can use it to keep spambots out.
This is super awesome.
Social Proofing is something that games like WoW use. It's like a party. Who wants to go to a party where no one's there? Now how many people want to go to Mardi Gra?

It's all about seeing more people and wanting to be in on it.
This is kinda silly. You judge a party by whether it's jumpin', not by the number of wallflowers.
11  Player / General / Re: US Federal Judge throws out Tim Langdell's "Mirror's Edge" Lawsuit on: October 06, 2010, 12:54:26 PM
The judge was probably using trolling in an older sense. (As in, he was "fishing for licensing opportunities"... or in other words, people to sue.)
This is also the original sense of the internet usage--"fishing for responses" (probably using flamebait). The noun form came later.

THIS HAS BEEN YOUR PEDANTIC INTERWEB HISTORY FOR THE DAY

I feel sort of original and sort of awful for the drug class I use not being on there.
Well? Don't leave us hanging.

What bugs me most about this is that they've got some decent points buried in there about the potential of video games, the increasingly narrow focus of mainstream developers, and what indies should do about it all. Nothing that hasn't been said before, but still worth talking about.

And then they bury it in such patently absurd pay-attention-to-me silliness that it actively destroys anything useful they had to say. I literally laughed out loud at their giant GAMES ARE NOT ART title card. How look-at-me-I'm-saying-something-controversial can you get? And then VIDEOGAMES ARE NOT GAMES while simultaneously video games are just bad games, EXPERTS AGREE, experts wouldn't lie to you would they? Not experts! And then "The modernist program of the previous century has eradicated all human aspiration for greatness", which made me laugh out loud again. I know art and literary criticism has its own vocabulary, I know it doesn't always make sense to outsiders, but that is gibberish.

Sigh.
