That IS adorable, and I think I may have heard of this iron on paper at some point, but now I've got to look into it more seriously.
I want a Shotgun Ninja shirt very very badly. "This struggle is philosophical!"

See, I'm just feeling a little bad about this thread, because we had that huge discussion about no goal, zero player, etc. a few weeks back and then it suddenly just stopped. Maybe that's how it usually works in this thread (I haven't been here long enough to know), but I find it strange; it would be nice if Derek told us which ones he was considering. Plus, there haven't been many serious suggestions since that discussion, or, at least, any that I found that interesting.

Player / Games / "reading into" games more than you should (for fun)
|
on: October 11, 2008, 02:42:12 PM

OK, so while playing I Was in the War I started to read into it too much, and while talking about the game/my ideas with someone else, I realized that my conclusions were quite funny and very absurd (at least to some). Here they are: So as you survive and run farther into the war zone you get bigger, and you become easier to hit because of that. Getting hurt shrinks your size, and so does just standing there. I think the size of your character reflects the characters ego; when it's big he's riskier and gets hit more, and when he gets hit is ego is literally deflated. OK, so I'm not sure if that was actually intentional on the part of the designer, but regardless, I noticed it, and read way to much into the game. I think it's possible to do this with lots of games, and to make bullshit conclusions too, which is even better. So read into things too much and post your really stupid conclusions!

You know, I wonder what would happen if a group of indies organized something during IGF to highlight this. Given that that event actually gets some press, I think if there was a group request during the festival for a better submission process, Steam might actually listen. As far as I rememeber, Audiosurf was an IGF game, so I think they must pay some attention to that festival.

Given the whole geographic problem, we could do two Jams, Easterners and Westerners. We could even make them Dueling Jams for extra epic. As far as I'm aware there a quite a few TIGers in B.C. (among them Chevy Ray and I Like Cake, I think), and there's a few of us in Alberta too. And believe it or not, it's shorter to drive from Winnipeg to Edmonton/Calgary than it is to Toronto. So I guess my selfish preference would be an Alberta Jam because it's in between Winnipeg and Vancouver, and the drive from each of those places would be about the same. That said, if it's during the academic year, I'd only be able to attend if it was in Winnipeg. I'm in Alberta. Conservative douchebag oil rig lift-kit pickup antigay ultra-christian capitol of Canada Ahhhh, good old Alberta (really, the landscape itself is great). Edmonton is nowhere near as backward as the rest of the province, but there are certainly some of those people here too; it makes my cry at night And man, there's nothing like being a very moderate Christian in a place like this.

OH MY!!! Medieval you're incredible! Quantic is great, and somehow I'd never really listened to his stuff until now. My weekend just got awesome!
Oh, and I think it's hilarious how this thread totally got resurrected. I created right around when I joined back in August, it died for like a month and is now back in full force. I think it should be stickyed because it's a great type of "general" discussion for a community to have.

The thing that I find funny about No More Heroes is how it's sort of like a highly adult / "dark" version of Mega Man. You're basically a psychopath cutting his way through 10 really weird bosses, instead of a happy robot blasting his way through 8.

OK, I'll create this now, way sooner than I need to so that we can discuss it. There's pile of us Canadians here, so we really should have a Jam of our own.

I had this neat idea for a GBA game, kind of a Knytt clone, with this tiny character: The basics of the idea are already apparent in that little animation. I might make some screen mockups later, too--just for fun, because it's not like I'll ever make this game. OH FUCK You sir, have created a game with a markedly similar graphical style to one of the games I'm working on, and now people will think I'm a thief. Oh, wait, now that I've read your design document post, the similarities aren't as bad as I thought. Still, similarities none the less.

Wipeout HD mostly
YOU DIRTY BASTARD!!! Sorry, I'm just that envious! And it doesn't help that my little brother has been playing it back home too. Once I actually have time to play one, I think I'll be picking up a PS3. It's funny, a year ago I completely berated the PSP and PS3, but this spring I caved and bought a PSP for Wipeout Pulse (I'm a former F-Zero junkie who's given up on Nintendo ever making a new one) and a few other games and have been generally impressed with it. My little brother bought a PS3 a couple months later, and I've been fairly impressed with what I've seen there too. In terms of what I've been playing, some MM9, re-visiting some of Kenta Cho's glorious shmups, and I've been trying to trick my mind into thinking my insanely demanding architecture studio course is actually an elaborate game, and that I should "play" it to win. Regrettably, this attempt at delusion isn't going so well, and all the monotonous labor and late nights (sometimes all nights) are really getting to me.

I'm not really old enough to get all nostalgic already... Nostalgia doesn't work like it used to. Our world (especially the tech world) moves insanely fast now; PC speaker isn't that old, but we're all nostalgic about it, because compared to our current tech it's incredibly primitive. I think nostalgia is simply something that one gets from advancing, and given our speed of advancement we may even reach the point where we're nostalgic for something that's as little as 2 years old.

Well, I think this discussion deserves a thread. Create it and I'd be happy to provide some insights (like how atmospheric games MUST be in fullscreen to achieve properly achieve their goal of atmosphere).

Examples are always great! If they're good, they can easily be as good as any tutorial. I guess I'm just curious of the other ways of approaching platform engines, especially since I've made a few very different ones over the years with very different levels of success.

Yeah, but Full Screen shouldn't be a menu option, it should be default on or off, or told immediately on the title screen. People like myself hate having our desktop clutter around games because it takes away from the atmosphere. I'd rather have a tiny playing window with a huge amount of black space around it that I would my desktop.
And I definitely agree with the whole programmer thing; I couldn't care less if all I can do is script, I've got games to design!
