Player / General / Volkswagen's The Fun Theory
|

Leaving aside the hypocritical fact that it's an auto company making a campaign regarding environmental issues, Volkswagen have made some urban interventions to promote positive actions, specifically not littering, recycling, and favoring the stairs. They called it 'the fun theory', and it's something that, being who we are, is not very surprising: making an activity fun makes it more likely to be performed. But it's quite interesting to see it in action in an ordinary context like the streets. They have effectively (as shown in the videos) awakened the curiosity of the passersby, and changed their response. See the recycling arcade, the bottomless garbage bin, and the piano steps below. Here's the site, with videos.

I'm really new to Flixel, so I may just not get it, but shouldn't you be putting the button in a layer, and adjust the scroll factor of that layer rather than of the button?

Player / Games / Re: How do you find Japanese indie games?

It's entirely possible that what I'm about to say is just due to my overall lack of familiarity with the scene, but most notable Japanese doujin games out there seem to be either in the fighting or shoot'em up genres. And they prominently feature loli artwork.

Player / Games / Re: Takahashi bored by the EGW - what is "experimental"?

Takahashi Keita. Everytime I read him, he doesn't seem to be sure of his own feelings, except that he doesn't want to be a conformist, and that he doesn't like the industry. He's a stereotypical artist, in that he's insecure, irrational, ambivalent. And he makes great games. He speaks some good words now and then, but they're, more often than not, rather aimless.
I also find the EGW somewhat perplexing. They really focus on a tiny fraction of what makes a game experimental. I can think of so many awesome experimental games out there, but so few of them would make the cut. I think that they focus on the verbs, specifically.

Anyway, Warioland 1 has a rabid fan base? I mean, don't get me wrong it's a good game but it's a pretty standard platformer as opposed to the other ones.
It's probably the first platformer whose avatar is stronger than its enemies, which changed the dynamics considerably. But the reason I love it is its aesthetics. Wario Land 3 is an endless collectathon.

That is pretty neat. I think I would've liked denser designs in that style, but they're nice.

Community / Assemblee: Part 1 / Re: Pixel font

Alright; I brought it into Fontstruct, as it's the easiest way to make a pixel font that I know. Other than it being usable now, it's much improved and expanded. Here's a sample: Get it here. There's still plenty of characters I'm iffy about. The numbers were a tad problematic, and I'm not sure why I went for text digits. I'll have to give them some more attention later, but at least they're already there.
