Started the through slash yesterday and it's quite done. Plain versionThe link is to the version without the extra space. @Kovski: Nice edit! The shading might be too complex in the body, but that might be an impression of mine.

Beyond the standard game skills I've developed, games helped a bit with english, and I learned the history of the templars with Broken Sword, and about New Orleans and voodoo with Gabriel Knight. And some random bits on geology and metalurgy with Dwarf Fortress.
But beyond that, I don't think you can learn much from games.

Checked those things. Widened the body a bit. Still looks thiner than the idle sprite, but the position doesn't helps. Added some shading on the body. The head is the same, only slightly edited, from the others so it's the same size.

Now that we have permission, I did a new sprite for Nikujin. Of course I'll still edit it if anyone has suggestions. - Wall Grabbing I'll try to do some other later or tomorrow.

Just to name a few. Venture Bros. Samurai Jack - Great look, great animation, and a style and ambient unique to cartoons. Not to mention the use of robots to put levels of violence and blood unacceptable otherwhise. Avatar - I love how it manages to have action, comedy, a romantic plot, and some more stuff, and still work it out. The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy - I like how it's full of cool references. Powerpuff Girls Ren & Stimpy - Loved it, but hated all the rip offs(*cough* Cow and Chicken *cough* ) Mission Hill The Critic Duckman Adventure Time - Love the jokes and the old school animation. Batman The Animated Series - By far my favorite when it comes to more serious stuff, and one of the best superhero adaptations, if not the best. Inhumanoids - Half Cthulhu, half Centurions. How could it not be full of win? 12 oz. Mouse - One of the best this late years. Still can't watch it without feeling slightly alienated. Family Guy - Took a while to like it, but now I love it. Well, that wasn't "a few". Also, I have to mention Clutch Cargo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFnLirXjjto

I think this is great.
Also, ASCII art is nice, well done it's at the same level as tiles. And those two last screenshots look awesome.

An OK reading, and a quite pontless rant. I don't agree with him in anything, except in the complain about the choices that appear along the game being unfair for a first time player. Considering he's a IF player it makes sense that he expects things from CS that are ridiculous.

As said, platformers are a dead genre in the mainstream. Also, they are easy to do.
They have plenty of space for your own ideas. Meaning, it's to put an original idea on a platformer, putting it in other genres might be more complicated.
As for big complex games, most people doesn't have the resources, time, desire, or will to spend 2 years doing RPG or RTS.
And the same goes for shmups.
