Player / General / Re: A Possible Solution to Game Piracy?

You can't solve human nature, only trick it into thinking it wants something it really doesn't. Piracy is the result of not having the means or desire to get the game otherwise. This is partially the developer's fault for not creating a product that seems worth the payment to the buyers.(this varies heavily person-to-person) If piracy was not in the scene, the developer would -- theoretically -- not have a single sale less than if the game was pirated. Perhaps even more, since people like Core Xii 'try before they buy', and once they're given the entire platter, they may think it rightful to go pay for it. Kind of like paying for food at a restaurant after the meal, something that the game and entertainment industry has yet to discover.

Yup it's Makar, loved that little dude in Wind Waker. Speaking of Zelda, I think I read somewhere that we need more Indie Zelda-like games, so I made this mmmm... yess.... double ultra yes, I too dream of an indie world with more zelda likes! There is so much to be done with that genre. *evil laugh* Why, yes, yes indeed, yes there is...

Developer / Design / The Cutscene-less Game

Imagine a game where there were virtually no cutscenes. If your player was in the scene, you had total control. Fable 2 tried this, and radically failed. My others have, as well, but also notably screwed up.
I think it's an idea that could add a whole new dimension to storytelling, and it surprises me that game developers haven't looked into it further, albeit a difficult concept to implement.
What are your thoughts on this subject?

Have a small collision box/line at the top of your player object.
If the vertical speed of your player object is moving downwards, have it check if this collision box/line at the top is intersecting anything. Make sure to give it a bit of a lip from the player's default collision geometry, as that would make the ledge grabbing much more trivial. The bigger the lip you give your collosion box/line, the easier it will be to grab ledges.

one correction: cave story isn't nonlinear, it's basically stage-based. everything goes in a precise order.
also, a ton of games have puzzles and exploration. if you use a loose enough definition, even mario is a rpg
to me, rpg means at least one of the following, and usually all of them: - classes, and different roles in battle (fighter, mage, healer, etc.), and a party of such characters - numerical stats, and increasing those stats through fighting creatures - finding/buying and equipping your party lots of different equipment (weapons, armor, expendable items, etc.) - battles where you give commands or orders rather than actively controlling the action in real-time
You just defined a cliche JRPG. Why don't we take RPG in it's literal context for definition? Role-Playing Game? In this sense I guess you can suppose most games are RPGs, but I think a practical addition to this is a game with character development and emphasis on the role-playing.(that is, playing the story of someone else.) I recommend Let It Live for a good Indie RPG. Too bad it's not out yet.

jakman4242... Basically just my name(Jack), taken a c out. Because of the fact I was a big fan of Jak & Daxter at the time, and I just felt like it... Now that I think about it, it might've been a typo. Man is just a bit more colorful than "Just jak".( ) The 4242 was because jakman was taken, and 42 was my father's lucky number. It really is an archaic name that I'd rather switch from, but at this point I figure I might as well stick with it since that's what everyone already knows me by.

Looking cool, Knite! I really like the turned font. I just made this run/idle. Crits? I think the arms are moving a bit too fast, as it is it's kind of like they're just *switching* over to the other side. [EDIT] Also, I just upgraded to Windows 7 and made this in the new MS Paint. Don't ask what the text is about, I don't really know myself. ... Maybe being stranded on an island, naked, has something to do with it?

I'm thinking the easiest approach to this is to have enemy units dynamically calculate a path, rather than use a predefined motion path. It wouldn't hurt to check that if there were no obstacles in it's corresponding segment, that I could assign a specific motion path anyway. Just in case I want a little flare.

I'm starting to get really interesting in Flash for my prime game development method. The idea that basically anything(except iPhones ) can run my game is definitely attracting me.

There are some old myths about pineapple juice or broccoli affecting the taste of a man's penis. Can anybody here make any claim to whether or not it's true?
It's true, i rubbed broccoli all over my penis and it tasted funny after that. Hahaha! :D If I'm right it's the semen not the actual penis.(although the semen that will inevitably touch the penis will do some.) And the principal basically goes "the healthier you eat, the better it should taste." So I've been told, at least.
