Nugsy: That's because you don't like building houses enough.
There are only so many houses you can build for yourself before it becomes meaningless. I really enjoy exploring the caves. (in contrast the caves in Terraria are... really boring)
I find the caves in Terraria interesting to explore. They are more interesting the deeper you get, as they become more dangerous. Also, I would not play a game just for the progression -- and I think if SMB3 allowed you to play any level at any time it would still be quite enjoyable. Then again, to be honest, I'm not sure I ever played it. There are a lot of games for which this would still hold true, however.
Yes, the levels would still be enjoyable to play. But if you placed someone in Terraria with a few things readily available to them, they would still have fun too. There is a difference between triumph and progression. The latter often follows the former, but they are separate things and feel different. Progression is meaningless. Triumph, victory, is rewarding.
Seriously, what? If you achieve progression, then you must have overcome something to reach that point. Overcoming something is a victory in itself, therefore the act of progressing is rewarding. Sub note: Have you really never played Super Mario Bros. 3?

The AI gets the job done. I'd say any cleverer and it would be too hard. Also it is impossible to grief, as you can only connect to a server if you know the IP/password. Obviously you could grief your buddies, but then you're a douche haha. Edit:There is no "end point" to advance to in either game. You could be remaking your village out of Meteor Ore with hellforged equipment with every NPC but you're still no further anywhere than at the beginning of the game.
I never said there was an endpoint, i said that you are making progress by doing these things. Obviously if you had every item in the game, and you have built your entire town out of the rarest minerals available then i'd say you have finished the game. There is a clear difference between the beginning of the game, and a later point in the game. You have better armour, better tools etc.

Which ultimately serves the same purpose as in Minecraft: To not have stuff kill you
But all enemies on Minecraft require the same tactic to defeat: Hit, move back, repeat. Also all that mining does get you things that increase your range of options, redstone, near invulnerable and powerful tools, unique use items, etc.
I agree with this, but once you have those items (Which doesn't take long). That's it, you're done. There are no other options, no other routes to take or alternate methods to obtain them. There is no purpose behind any of it, Nugsy; it's a game.
It depends how you define purpose. Going by my example, if i spend hours building that house in Minecraft, i have achieved nothing. Whereas with the Terraria example, at least i have progressed myself on to the next stage of the game. The purpose is to have fun, not work at a game so that it can give you more ways to work at getting the next thing.
This is a pretty strange thing to say. Games have been designed around this principle for years. Take SMB3 as an example, you "work" at a level so that it gives you access to the next one.

But ultimately everything you do in Minecraft is pointless. I could spend hours and hours in MC digging stone and building a huge mansion, but there is no purpose behind it.
Whereas if i spend hours in Terraria, i can build up a town and have people move into it, expanding my range of options within the game.

The facial animation looks brilliantly done. However with every new console title i see, i can't help but notice how dated the graphics look. Now i'm no graphics whore, but when you see what we can really do with graphics these days ( Samaritan tech demo), it kinda makes you wish this generation of consoles would hurry up and die.

Didn't have time to add anything, just fixed the moves. Well, if anyone can magically change mine to blue, that'd be rad.

I only have a little niggle with the new sprites.
They are holding their arms perfectly straight when they hold things, and it looks a bit unnatural. I would personally move the objects closer to the body, and maybe give the arm a bit of a bend. Especially on the shield guy.
Love the new sytle though, much easier to read!

This game is excellent. I bought it the day it was released, and i haven't stopped playing it since. In fact, in the past few days i have already racked up a quarter of the time i have spent playing Minecraft, and i have owned that for 2 years. The graphics make absolutely no difference to the gameplay, i for one think they look really nice. Some really smooth animation in there, even if the main characters are slightly edited FF sprites.
It's easy to see why people compare this to Minecraft, but it is a totally different experience. It is SO much better.
Terraria actually gives you a sense of progression that Minecraft simply cannot deliver. There is a reason for building houses, a reason for building armour. It is absolutely packed with content.
Yesterday alone, me and my cousin: - Fought a giant eyeball that once it had lost a significant amount of health, lost it's lens and became a giant mouth with supersharp teeth. - Visited hell, and was utterly crushed by a giant worm made of bone. - Destroyed a shadow orb, which caused a meteroite to crash into the earth. We proceeded to fend off its inhabitants while we mined the entire meteorite out of the ground. (Which we then used to make armour). - Fought another giant worm, this time with hundreds of eyes, which was summoned from a different shadow orb. Everytime a section of this worm was destroyed, it split into even more worms which had to be battled individualy. - Had our town attacked by a huge Goblin army. The battle lasted 10-15 minutes, in which time we had to protect our villagers against being killed by the Golbins (which we failed at, as three of our villagers met an untimely end) whilst making sure we stayed alive. In the end we crushed the Goblin army, leaving us with a ton of money and tons of spiky balls to throw at future enemies. We'll be prepared for these guys should they attack again.
Seriously, if you don't think this game sounds like fun (or sounds like it has a shit ton more to do than Minecraft) then you should go see a doctor. Or a nurse. But don't come to our village because she died horribly at the hand of a Goblin Warrior.

I notice you said a few of your friends are making levels for the first release. Could anyone join in, or would you like to keep it to people you know? I think a few people here would help you out, if you wanted them to of course.

I saw this in another thread and it looks great.
The water and coloured lighting are new to me though, i especially like the way the light fades off in water. Beautiful!
I hope this is some kind of rpg/exploration game.

I don't think this should be called a "Minecraft-alike". Looks fun though, i'll give it a go shortly. It would be cool to have an archive option too, rather than just an installer. Edit:This is fun! I like the idea of classes, i'm going to give this a go online later. Suggestions: - It would be nice to use mousewheel to change blocks rather than F. - Some sort of indication of what you need to build certain blocks. I don't really understand the recipe for doors at the moment. I'm guessing it's wood and ore, but i don't know exactly how many blocks of each.(Aha! It tells you in icons at the top left which blocks you need). - I also think that all classes should be able to do some form of building. At the moment when you are playing with 2 people you either have to both be a fighting class, or both be a builder. If one of you is a fighting class, the other person can't build. Maybe you could make it so that only builders can create special blocks such as doors? - Just been playing on the official server. I think part of the reason it's turned into a mostly underground brawl is the fact that all classes can dig. As well as this, someone had built a nice fort, but i managed to get in and kill them by digging through the wall as a soldier. It felt a bit unfair to me that i was able to do that. (You can change class at your enemies spawn point, i don't know if you are supposed to be able to do this.)

Round 1 voting has started! Good luck guys! How long should we wait for the FIRST ROUND? I think this will die like the original thread, dunno what are it's author's plans.
I am going to wait longer than i did with the last thread, so that more people have the time to enter.
