Then I shall ask this question: how does one become a judge? So, in other words, I'm pretty sure it was quite hard for the IGF comittee (or whoever decides who judges)to find enough judges to look at all those games. I mean everyone is busy. And I'm pretty sure judges aren't paid to do this job. Unless I'm wrong of course. So yeah, the IGF is a bit the victim of its own success on that topic but the guys and gals behind the event know what they are doing. There's also the fact that when you don't get picked, you tend to find ways to explain your rejection aside from admitting "the game wasn't good enough". I was rejected. My game wasn't good enough to beat 305 other games. Next year, we'll see. (of course I'm aware that some games I would have loved to see picked as finalist but that's an opinion and opinion are quite personal. but as Fish mentioned somewhere, there are some close calls and perhpas 30 or 50 other games barely made it, as non-judges we don't have all the scores that were given to all the games.)

Konjak, I wanted to respond to your post in the same fashion but I stopped since it's too gnikcuf gnol. I don't even know why I post in this thread, really, I'm not paying attention to what is going on. Is this about god being a living mass of lazer penguins that plays an electric guitar made of t-rexes while shooting rainbows out of its crotch? If not, why isn't it?

I want to chime in on something real quick, because I'm seeing a lot of mentions about the repeat nominations. We don't choose the finalists; they are simply the top-scoring games in each category. There is no editorial control (we can't look at a category and say, "Oh, we should pull Game X because it's already a finalist in A and B"). The judges' scores are the sole determining factor in who is and isn't a finalist.
True. And quite frankly it's the kind of thing that can happen when many judges feel the same way about a specific game. It also happens in other entertaiments too. It's not uncommon to see a movie win multiple awards at a show for example. Are you planning on expanding the amount of finalist next year though? The 300+ entrants was kind of a surprise from what I have read here and there, are you thinking about changing the rules for next year? Maybe it's too soon to talk to, IGF 2010 hasn't even been held yet! On a side note, it must have been hard to coordinate all the judges needed to play all those games. Kudos to the organizers

If you want a blasphemous, dumb, totally over the top hack'n'slash game with boobs, I'd say go for Bayonetta. I found it almost impossible to hate due to its total honesty about its own stupidity and shallowness. It's not even a postmodern self-awareness type of thing, it's like developers saying "yeah, we know our game is dumb, so what?". I agree with you. The devs of Bayonetta are clearly making this game for the kicks of it. They are not covering up the whole silliness of their theme; they are being completely honest in their design decisions and are fully embracing their theme. I tip my hat to that.

Not only is this a cheap rip-off of God of War I always find it irritating when people accuse games of being God of War ripoffs, seeing as God of War is pretty much a straight ripoff of Devil May Cry. Not exactly. When I say rip-off, it's just more than basic mechanics. It is also about the feel and general direction of the game. Comparing Devil May Cry and God of War shows similarities but have very different vibes. The protagonist are very different and the flow of the game is also quite different. Dante's Inferno is not just ripping off the basic mechanics of God of war (or following a "genre"); it's ripping off every aspect of the game. The introduction of the game, the needless boobs, the way the enemies fight, the way you open chests, the way you gather power, the spell system, the animation of the character, the character design (just look at the color scheme used and the attitude of the character as well as the fact that the character died and come back refusing to die), the fact that it loosely uses a known "mythology", the music and the concept of a character who travel to a godly realm to kill a godly being to avenge his wife's death jus makes me feel like this was designed primarly by a marketing department. I wouldn't be surprised if later in the game you could steal cars and use prostitutes to regen hp.

Dante's Inferno.
Not only is this a cheap rip-off of God of War but it's repetitive, boring and makes a total mockery of what the original work stands for. The game is not out yet but the demo is available and quite frankly, it's the kind of game that will help the game industry as much as Barbie dolls helps the feminists movement. It won't stir controversy on the public scene: it will only strenghten the "video games are for stupid, ignorant, 16 years old males who like to see boobs, blood and don't have a social life" stereotype.
Maybe I'm pushing this too far tho. Still, the game takes itself seriously depsite the fact to be quite cliched and completely off the original work.

I caught the last minutes of yesterday's show. It was quite interesting. Can we listen to past shows? Where to we get the scedules for these shows? Do you have a list of future guests?

First of all, big congrats to all the finalists! You guys rock! I'm looking forward to see what happens next. I mentioned this elsewhere but I'm slightly dispointed to see only 20 games nominated. 5 games per category is nice but having some game repeated numerous time is a bit too much in my opinion. I mean, not from the point of view of a contestant nor a judge, but from a point of view of someone visiting. 300+ entries and you only get to see like 20 games. The indies boast their ability for originality and variety but during the show, they'll be only a handful of games. Maybe it's room issues? I dunno. Makes me feel as if either A) 286 titles were not that good (which is not the case) or B) The indie world is not that varied after all. But hey, it still a good selection and it should be an interesting show. I guess I was expecting something more with a record breaking 306 entries. It's not like there were only a few games to choose from. Maybe next year? I dunno.

This thread oddly reminds me of recess time in 6th grade... Which reminds me how lucky we were not to have any internet access during that time. "My neighbor's friend once told me that he knew someone who fell and scraped his knee so bad they had to sew it up" was the nastiest thing you could get. Now, I don't know what will be needed to top off whatever stuff kids today find laying in the jungle that is the world wide web. On a side note, I didn't click on the maggot foot link. Why? because I had a friend who had the habit of sending us link like that and every freakin' time I clciked, I always went " Jeezaaaz fraggin' keeer ii sssss! What the frag is wrong with you, you sick twisted perverted son of a freakin' figger licking whore?" So I'm not clicking that. Oh and I might as well just say "your grandma, fully naked, doin' it with the family dog in the christmas buffet" but I never witnessed that.

Buying arcade sticks in Canada sucks. All the good selection comes from the states. Why no arcade love Canada? Why?

Thanks a bunch guys! I'm looking into all this info to find the right controller for a semi homemade arcade I want to build. I've got an old tv and I always dreamed of having an aracde at home. I'm looking to see what would be the best thing to do. however, I'm not much of an handy man when it comes to electronics so i need to think how I could tackle this project! Plus I'd just like to have an arcade stick at home Thanks guys! Edit: Forgot to mention that I don't have a budget limitaton. So far

Thanks guys I also saw this one, didn't know if it was good or not. It looks pretty good but I'm no expert. I heard good stuff about the SF4 pads but I'm looking for pc stuff. however, the 360 version should be usb so perhaps that could work.
