Might be too obvious.

Drumcorps eats Bong-Ra for breakfast (pun unintended) when it comes to playing live. Even when he tries to sing.

Yeah, I saw this some time ago, it's great, especially combined with the adventure mod made by the same guy/guys, where you can handle items in both hands.
1405  Developer / Technical / Re: 3D graphics engine, which one to chose? on: January 12, 2011, 02:16:34 PM
Ok, I guess I should've been more specific.

I want a 3D RENDERING engine, that I could incorporate into my game engine/framework.
I don't want to write it from scratch, I've done it for 2D rendering by using SDL (and previously GLFW) but for 3D rendering I'd like a ready to use engine.

I'm writing in C++ and am developing for both Windows and Linux, compiling with gcc and mingw.
So Unity is not an option.

I'm looking into UDK now, does it support Linux?
[edit] Apparently it doesn't. And the licensing also scares me off a little.
1406  Developer / Technical / 3D graphics engine, which one to chose? on: January 12, 2011, 01:55:50 PM
I want to build a game engine/framework, with networking, sound, physics and graphics. For 2D graphics I just used openGL through SDL, but for 3D I'd like to have something more high level.

I hear a lot about Ogre3D, so I'm currently looking into it, but maybe you recommend something else?
I want to be able to easily implement dynamic lighting, shadows, maybe bump-mapping. And of course loading common 3d-model filetypes.

I have absolutely no experience in 3D graphics but know a bit of openGL.
1407  Player / Games / Re: earth-shattering battle between icycalm and jason rohrer on: January 12, 2011, 10:49:30 AM
I see a ton of crap being said by Icycalm but I must say that I am most impressed by his attitude towards discussion in general.

In the modern world we have pretty much killed all objectivism, each have his own taste, morality, philosophy. There is no longer any discussion between atheists and religious people, there is no way to prove that there is a God, and there is no way to prove that there isn't. This applies to everything. And this makes all discussion pointless.
To prove anything you need an axiom, or a set of axioms. But there is no longer anything universal, no axiom agreed upon by everyone that cannot by defied. Even the fact that I think and therefore I am can be denied. We live in the era of absolute subjectivism.

And yet there are people who will not stand it. Who will not agree to disagree and don't want you to just accept their opinions. They know THE TRUTH, they just KNOW they are RIGHT. No faggot will tell them that 'it's just your opinion'. They will bludgeon you to death, but they will stand by the truth. For they do not 'think' or 'believe', they just fucking KNOW.

I just found and read the whole thread and have two things to say:
1. I'm very impressed Aquin, both with how you traced him and with what you did with the information. If you had your TV show I'd watch it Gentleman
2. I should probably look into hard-coding copyright info into my games...

Perhaps it's just my unbelievably dull imagination, but I cannot fathom any type of structure in a single player game which would use complex railroad devices to the point where the functionality would make good worth of the costs of labour incurred for acquiring the materials.

I use a straight line of railroad in my singleplayer, about 140 blocks long, with automatic start-boosters turned on by a button on both sides. It's very useful, because walking this 140 block every time I want to move between the two places it connects was just awful.

Seeing as no one is trying this I'll give another hint:

I can picture a vertical minecart as a lift. I'm not so sure about large-scale rotating structures like mills, or anything involving stuff not being at right-angles. Minecraft is a very digital world and I'm not sure things on a block scale (rather than a mob scale) could could support moving in an analogue way. I'd love for someone to prove me wrong though.

I can imagine a 'watermill' block that would be placed beside a block of flowing water and would be animated. Then there could be a 'cog' block. A cog placed beside a watermill would become animated, and if you place a cog beside a moving cog it will start moving too. This way you could transport force from a watermill to, for example, a booster block placed below or beside track blocks.

Venture into the depths of a cave, only to have a volcano spit you back out in the end. At least you got a bunch of gold in the process, and maybe "saved" a few damsels in distress.

Spelunky?

Does only the person who guessed right describes another game or is it free for all?
1418  Feedback / Playtesting / Re: Minecraft (alpha) on: January 09, 2011, 11:20:24 AM
I can't see it ever happening though, unfortunately.

With the modding possibilities they are planning to add why not? I'm pretty sure I've already seen a mod that offered lifts. They just worked more or less like teleporters, but maybe it will be somehow possible to move blocks and players around? Or a vertical minecart hack? That would be a hilarious way of implementing a lift :D

I should have clarified in the original post that this is for simple cartoon-ish car physics.

Now this makes a big difference Smiley
In this case Paul's advice is definitely best.

it would be new if it provided a greater range than a standard torch, ie if it lit redstone for around 3-4 times a longer distance.

You could do the same thing with repeaters, it would only take less space. I don't think it opens any new possibilities.
