I think this is exactly what you're looking for: /r/gamesthemovie/

On a side note - does anyone know if these videos have any legal ground to stand on? I always thought Let's Plays are covered by fair use since the commentary of those videos is what's important, but these "Movie" videos don't have any commentary. They're essentially a substitute for playing the game; if someone were to watch the movie version of Bioshock Infinite, they would have little reason to purchase the game themselves. Granted, there are some people who watch these movie versions for nostalgia purposes after having bought and played a game, but surely that's not the only audience for it?

I'm teaching several newbies how to play the dotes. One of them is a really passive guy, he just casts spells if I tell him to do it. The other guy is more like "I have mana, so I should probably cast my spells" and then he doesn't have any mana left to cast shit when it would actually matter. It's awesome. Smiley

Eh, I think the combat in D3 is fine, personally. On the tactical level it's a pretty fun game - most of the skills are satisfying to use and have nice animations. It's just that the long-term, strategic parts (character builds, itemization) are all poor or nonexistent and that drags the combat down.

IMO if the strategic level was given a complete overhaul so the player had options and could choose where to go with their character, but the combat was mostly kept the same, it would be a good game. That's probably never gonna happen though.

I'm playing the game where you attempt to purchase a game on the first day of the summer sale, but the transaction error boss keeps killing me just before I can finish the level.

boy this thread degenerated quickly
I don't know why people can't just bring up a good point (the thing about Doug having inappropriate political views) without being assholes about it. Shrug

Siskavard is mostly being civil here. I like that, and I wish the people who disagree with him would do the same.

Why are you talking about? Yes, you can make elevator go faster by paying 10 energy, but you can also wait 10 seconds. I mean, it won't hurt to wait that much to go next level? Maybe it worked differently earlier though.
Unless you have an Elevator Pass or you found some kind of exploit, taking the elevator to a new dungeon level in Spiral Knights will always cost you 10 energy.

For me it's not a big issue though. I rarely have the time to play 10 dungeon levels in a single day, and in fact I often have trouble using all of my Mist Energy before it starts going to waste. It's a very nice MMO for people who don't play that much every day since it only costs you crystal energy once you go over the daily limit.

oh no, those poor bigots being shamed. god help them! no, they weren't ignorant of it. maybe you should read the thread, and you can use female pronouns, thanks, bigot.
At what point between the start of the thread and Netsu's "Funded!" post on page 3 did anyone mention Doug's political views?
390  Player / Games / Re: Armikrog (successor to The Neverhood) kickstarter! on: July 09, 2013, 12:31:56 PM
I'd like to know why no one said anything about this when the kickstarter was actually going on. I've never visited Doug's personal websites, blogs or what have you. I had no idea what his political views were, so I could not make a decision based on those views. What is the point of bringing all of this up now except to shame the people who were ignorant of it?

Also, is this ave/Eva person evading a ban or something? In that case I can already see why they got banned.

the people that flock to F2P titles are, in general, the same impulsive-non-commital profile that are so easy to manipulate.  Sad
That, and the people who simply don't play enough videogams per month to make it reasonable to pay a monthly fee.

When you get a subscription for something like WoW, you feel a need to play as much as possible to make it worth your money. After all, if you only play WoW for a few hours every month, then the subscription is a bit of a waste, isn't it? So a lot of people get sucked into playing more than they would have if they were allowed to play for free at any time.

I have never played a subscription-based MMO and I don't think I will. I want to be in control of my spending, so the idea of a recurring fee is frustrating in my eyes, regardless of the amount.

Is this a sandbox? Because I hate sandboxes.
393  Player / Games / Re: Free to play, not-scammy MMOs? on: July 07, 2013, 11:01:59 PM
It's not really an MMO, but you may be interested in Dota 2 since it is free to play and only sells cosmetic items.

The problem is that the developers of these games have to make money somehow. Not just to develop the game but also to keep the servers running. Generally, simply selling cosmetics won't cut it, because most players don't care about cosmetics. Only reason Valve can make their game so good and still make it free is because it draws more customers to Steam, where they can make a huge profit selling other games. I'm sure you can find more free MMOs than the ones you listed, but if they don't sell power then they're probably not going to make a lot of money, which means they're low budget games.

95 dead children later, I have won Rogue Legacy. Crowstorm liches and dwarf-dragons are the best!

I don't think EO is a pure jRPG. I believe it's more accurate to say Etrian Odyssey is part of the dungeon crawler genre, which traditionally has had little in common with Japanese RPGs. It lets you create your own party and there isn't much of a storyline to speak of.

Paul's description of it sums it up well for me:

[Grinding is] relaxing, it's not stressful, it's a leisurely activity. it's like gardening, sort of. you plant stuff and watch it grow and you customize the garden to your liking
397  Player / Games / Re: What are you playing? on: July 05, 2013, 08:39:28 AM
idk why people always bash grinding games. People play games for different reasons. Some just play a game because they want to kill the evening and that's fine. It's the reason why super grindy games like WoW and Diablo are still popular.

I used to play korean MMOs, turn on Winamp and just chill out while listening to nice music. It was enjoyable because it was something to do.

For an indie example, GINORMO SWORD was pretty popular on TIGS back when it was released, even though it encourages the player to grind at every point of the game.

My beef with Dredmor has mainly to do with how it likes to hide game mechanics from the player. Last time I played it, I had to go search the wiki to even know the purpose of my skills. I mean, some games hide the exact numbers and that's understandable, but Dredmor's skill descriptions were all about flavor at the expense of those who like to make informed decisions.
399  Player / Games / Re: Games with best story. on: July 04, 2013, 02:41:37 AM
I love the wordless intro in Lyle in Cube Sector. You see the hero's house and his cat, a villain steals the cat, the hero looks out the window in shock, and when you press New Game he walks out of the house. It tells you everything you need to know in the span of a few seconds and gives the player character a motive for doing all the things he does. There's a minimalist beauty to it.

Linear as it was, I really liked the story of The Spirit Engine 2. I think it's one of the best indie stories out there, and the writing is top notch as well.

I'll probably post again ITT when I can think of some more games.
