Today I tried porting an old "Music Catch"-clone prototype, from Flash/Flixel to HTML5/Javascript/canvas. This truly is easier than it seems :D Now to make it look sexy EDIT: Not really convincing.

I recommend you read up on this. And, for the love of baby jebus, don't use Flash or any ridiculously fancy Javascript because that stuff will just annoy the crap out of people. :< Keep it simple. Thanks, this link helps a lot. One thing though... I study and work as a programmer. I'm not looking for a job as an artist, but I thought a portfolio would be a nice thing to have, because I do art as a hobby. I can also put self-made games in my portfolio, as I often do all the music + art + code. Now that I've read your article, I'm in doubt... Is a portfolio really useful for me? Should I keep showing my art, or do I need to show only my games? Maybe I could find an other way to show my "art-oriented" mind (blog?), while keeping a game-only portfolio?

Apparently the people who browse those portfolios have a habit of opening links to individual items in new tabs, and just tabbing between them when evaluating your work. Didn't know that, that's helpful Go for something simple. It may be a blog, a web, or whatever, but easy to read, please. You have to make an instant impact.

I had a blog back in 2010, I posted at least one piece of art every week, as a challenge. I'm still showing this blog as a "portfolio", but I know I need to change that. Mostly because I stopped updating the blog.

I'm making my online portfolio at the moment. I need to put music, videos, images, flash content and downloadable games, online. How should I organize this?
-Wordpress-like categories, spread on different pages -Link to external websites (vimeo/soundcloud/flickr/...) -All the content on the same page
Tell me how you like your portfolios. Links appreciated :D

Finish your game. FINISH. IT. The pause menu, the options and the credits roll, too. Add some fluff when the thing is done, if you still have time and motivation

Top one is my attempt at doing photoshop/higher resolution art (basically just attempting to learn other art styles besides pixel art), and bottom one is my normal pixel art version. The tiles in the top one don't loop properly yet, I need to work with the tileset a bunch more still I'd rather play the non pixel-art version, if I had the chance.

What sort of game? What kind of environment? I guess it's a platformer, so take inspiration from Mario, Megaman, etc...
Some ideas: Platform creation, self-cloning, ranged attack, melee attack, fast-swim, ...
