Neither Indians (from India), nor Aztecs (from Mexico), get much love in video games... capiche?
And btw, this is a thread for black characters, not "types of people that get no love!" Stay on topic!

Nice job, guys! Guillermo, you named some great ones. I'm noticing a lot of fighting games... which is fine, but for one thing like every race is always represented in fighting games, and the "main characters," i.e. the Ryu and Kens and Axels are never black. But regardless: (Sean and Elena from SFIII)

By "main" do you mean playable or just integrated into the fabric/story of the game?
Oh, I thought of that chick from HL2 and her dad.
I thought of her, too, but no, I mean playable! Haha! That vein on his arm cracks me up so much...
I guess Normal Mapping has found its raison d'etre.
maybe he just decided to plant a little tree inside his arm.
I have a vein like that, actually. It's not on my arm, though...

...that aren't basketball players (i.e. Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City, and Shaq Fu don't count) or rappers (no Def Jam: Vendetta). Or really any characters that aren't based on people in real life (no Michael Jackson's Moonwalker). No seriously, the discussion on the front page got me thinking... Jax from Mortal Kombat? That guy from Unreal Tournament? What's his name, Marcus? Crackdown: CJ from San Andreas (thanks BMcC, I can't believe I forgot that one): Brandon just told me that Lyle from Lyle in Cube Sector is black. I guess he is! Nice! Go indie gaming! And apparently Jade from Beyond Good and Evil is black. Didn't know that: (what's up with black people and the color green in video games?) And Akuji from Akuji the Heartless: By the way, I'm talking about main characters, so unfortunately Superfly Johnson from Daikatana doesn't count. Too bad, seeing as how he's like... such a great representative of African Americans in video games. Can we think up any more?

From my experience, it's good to focus on one project and have some little ones on the side. Here's the breakdown of how feasible it is for you: Start with 80% chance for completion of a project: -Working on X other projects? Subtract X * 10% -Have you completed a game before? Yes +20%, No -20% -For every game you've completed, add 5% for a minor project (< 1 year development time) and 10% for a major project (> 1 year). -Now subtract 5% for every month this game will take you to make. -If you're working over the internet, subtract 20%. Now, keep in mind that this doesn't take into account a lot of other important factors, such as how many people you're working with and who you're working with. Also keep in mind that I just pulled this completely out of my ass.

For some reason I really enjoy the concept of controlling a video game using your voice.
How about a game which you control by singing? I mean, not a game about singing, per se, but a game where, for example, abilities are accessed by humming short phrases?
There was a game at IGF that let you control a car via a microphone by making racing car sounds: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7458010617518035494Definitely a fun idea, but it's hard as hell to play for more than a a minute or two. Would work well as a WarioWare minigame, I feel.

I hafta agree with Anthony on this one... maybe I shouldn't have added the "aka Nostalgic Screenshots" in there. Essentially I feel like there could be an evocative screenshot to be found in a Roguelike (or any type of game), but the one posted which just shows a bat missing the player, is hardly evocative. It evokes certain feelings, but perhaps not the type I was thinking of. Which is fine, but it is turning into a bit of a free-for-all. What I meant are screenshots that evoke a sort of swelling, strong emotion, like seeing a beautiful landscape or perhaps a heartfelt moment. Nostalgia is a good one, but it should be a poignant scene, and not just a scene.

I'm sorry about the pagestretching. What's the general opinion here, should I edit my post to just include links to the images or what?
Nope! Well, only if you want to. I like to see the screenshots in the post itself, personally.

The Seiklus guy I can see, although the other ones I'm not so sure about. The characters certainly are simple, but I'm not sure if they're necessarily iconic. It may very well be that the games are not well known enough. In the end, the game probably can't be too obscure or else it won't make sense. Or at least, if the game is obscure, then the character needs to be well known for some reason... And speaking of non-obscure games, the Darwinians are very recognizable... probably one of the most in the indie games community:
