Finally got around to Bioshock. I've tried to pick it up a few times, but was too busy to really get into it. I figured it was a good time to finally try and make my way through it because Bioshock Infinite looks amazing.
It's amazingly creepy, atmospheric and has some of the greatest production values I've seen in a game. The only thing that is pissing me off now is that the enemies are all bullet-sponges. I have the game set on the hardest difficulty and it takes 20 rounds from the machine gun to take out the damn splicers and about 7-8 shots from the pistol. It's ridiculous. I'm seriously thinking of turning down the difficulty back to normal because I suspect that all hard does is make enemies have more health. However, after looking at the Bioshock Wiki hard difficulty seems to only increase all enemies health by 155%, which doesn't seem too bad, does that mean they still soaked up bullets on normal even? It just irks me that it would even take 20 rounds to take out one enemy.
I'm digging the game a lot though, I love the audio logs and the fact that there aren't any cutscenes to really speak of (aside from the intro). The animation for mainlining the plasmids is spectacular and really illustrates how insidious plasmids can be and there are a lot of really great scripted sequences that really pull you into the world of rapture. Speaking of Rapture, there really isn't anything like it. Underwater cities just have a mysticism to them.

Found an excellent overview on Reddit of everything that has been released about the PS4 so far compiled in one place: Official Features
- The PS4 allows people to resume games instantly upon powering on the system (no startup time) from where they were when they turned the system off. (Source)
- All PS4 games (that aren't camera-based) should be playable remotely on Day 1 via Remote Play on the PS Vita.(Source)
- The PS4 will allow users to play games after downloading only a small portion of the game's data.(Source)
- Share button functionality allows for quick screenshots or video upload of gameplay as well as sharing live streams of gameplay with friends or over USTREAM.(Source)
- The system will launch with a headset that plugs directly into the controller for more prevalent voice communication across the PSN. (Source)
- Cross-game chat is officially supported.(Source)
- The PS4 will not block used games. Though publishers are free to do as they wish.(Source)
- Game prices will range from $0.99-$59.99. (Source)
- All PS4 games will be available as digital downloads. (Source)
- The PS4 will support Move but not the DualShock 3. (Source)
- A PlayStation app called 'PlayStation App' is coming to Android and iOS that allows the device to act as a second screen (a la SmartGlass) as well as purchase content and have it directly downloaded to your system. (Source) It stands to reason that this will also include messaging on the go and other stuff like that.
- The PS4 will support 4K video output but not for games.(Source)
- The PS4 is 3D capable but it is not a focus. (Source)
- Certain apps can run in the background of games (such as the web browser) so you can access them without having to leave the game itself. (Source)
Unsupported- The PS4 is not natively backwards compatible and thus cannot play PS3 games by default. However, to remedy this Sony has invested heavily in cloud gaming and hopes to have a cloud-based solution to allow for PS3 games on the PS4 as well as other devices. (Source)
- The PS4 will not support the DualShock 3. (Source)
Missing Stuff So Far- The System Itself - No biggie. My guess it will be a black box with stuff in it.
- YouTube & Twitter - They were both strangely missing for the apps page in the OS preview and USTREAM seems to be the official gameplay stream site of choice for Sony. This could mean Xbox is about to announce something big in conjunction with YouTube. (Source) Still, USTREAM does support easy uploading of videos to YouTube (Source) so, as long as there is an easy way to watch YouTube, this shouldn't be a big deal.

Just updated OP with links to various Python and Pygame related tutorials. So is a post summarising most of the papers introducing recent pathfinding algorithms useful? I don't see why not. It could prove to be useful. I'll add it to the additional resources section. Thanks for the link

no i saw it in 3d, so i guess it was 48. still didn't look fake to me. I haven't seen it yet (dammit) but from what I hear the reason a lot of people thought it looked fake is because the higher framerate makes everything look much more detailed. This broke the immersion for some people because they could see the costumes/set in much higher detail which revealed the flaws that your typical camera doesn't pick up. That, and 48fps is what a lot of American soap operas use, which could account for some people thinking it looked fake as well.

hasn't most casual gaming more or less migrated to smartphones anyway?
Pretty much, it would seem. Which is definitely putting Nintendo in an interesting spot regarding their marketed demographic since most of the casuals are migrating away from consoles. I think they could really bring back that crowd if they play up the strengths of the system (local multiplayer family fun and asymmetric coop goodness) and the similarity to the tablet/smartphone games that they are currently familiar with. little king's story didn't even use any wiimote features haha
Oops : : Don't shoot me guys, it's been awhile since I've played that game and I could have sworn it was one of a few games that I remember having really good Wiimote controls.

a lot of ppl told me that before i saw the movie but i didn't notice it at all. though i heard theres a 24fps version too, so maybe i saw a 24fps screening?
Only the 3D version was in 48fps as far as I am aware. So if you didn't see it in 3D, then yes, you did see the 24fps version.

I don't agree about the wiimote statement. What's to disagree with? Some games are great for Wiimote interaction (Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Zak and Wiki, Little King's Story etc...) and some games were completely horrible for it (most racing games on the Wii, sports games that utilize multiple buttons, platfomers (which is funny because they are Nintendo's bread and butter, but the classic controller was much better suited for 2D plats)). It was really hit or miss because most a lot of genres just don't play well with motion. Content sells consoles. No one hears about the Wii U. Suddenly Zelda is big. Everyone plays it. Has a big marketing push. Everyone hears about the Wii U. Sure, the core audience will flock to Zelda. However, I don't see Susy Soccermom really rushing out to grab the Wii U after the Zelda U announcement. What's going to sell the console is a casual grabber like Wii Play or Wii Sports Resort that plays to the strengths of the system (for some reason Nintendo Land isn't really filling this role like Wii Sports did) and marketing that dispels the notion that the Wii U is not just a tablet controller add-on for the Wii. To PS4. What's a feature I should be excited about, as a potential dev for it? Pick whatever you want. Well, for me it would have to be the crazy amount of ram. It means higher resolution textures, more particles and effects, better AI, more dynamic lighting/real-time reflections and greater draw distances. Sony hasn't really brought too much new to the table other than a beefier spec, built-in social features, cloud-gaming and suspend/sleep, so I don't really see anything else that I would get too excited for if I were a dev at this point.

I feel kind of like this generation is different, in response to the Wii U's sales figures. Ouya, Minecraft. These things now are community based. They don't need big launches, because it's not about marketing, it's about quality of content and consumers communicating with each other. I could argue that for Minecraft I suppose. And perhaps even the Ouya (even though the jury is still out on the market for that console). However, I don't think Nintendo is really in the position to not market the console as much as possible and to as many demographics as possible. Sure, the Wii U will probably be more niche then the PS4 and Next-box, but Nintendo is still a major player in the console space: not just quality content is going to save them, they need more exposure. We're kind of talking about the Wii U a lot. Apparently that is the dreaded curse of all PS4 threads on TIGS: we end up talking about other things Soooo, back on the topic of PS4.... What does everyone think of the new "social" media features such as the sharing button? I think that is could potentially be a great place to expose more people from the console space to the ability to publish their own Let's Plays and other video content. I'm not terribly keen on the whole idea of Facebook/whatever integration, but I do think it will have value for some people at least. Not to go back to blabbing about the Wii U, but I think this is something that Nintendo really did right this time around with Miiverse. If Sony can create something as interesting and inclusive you can count me in.

My prediction is that the Wii U will receive spotty multiplat support for the next year or two and then start to fall off after the PS4 and Durango really start pushing the envelope. I just can't see the Wii U getting much support when we start seeing games that begin to push the hardware more. The only possible scenario where Nintendo might see multiplats further down the line would be if the Wii U started to sell much better than it currently is.

The question for porting becomes, at least always for me it would be, can I use the (Wii U) gamepad to add more to the game? Assuming I'm already on PS4. ... There's a skill to making your game's hardware dependencies flexible from the beginning. If devs see the unique value of each system then they are more likely to think about these things. I think the Wii U game pad offers more opportunity to expand a "hardcore" game than the wiimote and nunchuck did.
I sure hope so. However, I can see the potential for lazy implementations of the gamepad because developers feel pressured or obligated to utilize it. Although, a lot of the reason behind the Wiimotes difficulty being adapted well was due to the fact that the input method is better for some games (FPS,3rd person shooters) and horribly counter-intuitive for others. It's a lot easier to find effective uses of the gamepad, even if it is just dedicated to inventory and the HUD.

I always feel like the controller is the biggest issue, but I don't know much about porting across consoles.
Whatever the situation is the Wii U must support multiplat better than the Wii, right? Don't know.
As far as I know the Gamepad is pretty much able to represent your typical traditional controller, just with the addition of the screen in the middle is all. However, if it is an issue for devs there is the Wii U pro controller which is closer in design to the Xbox 360 controller. However, I would assume that Nintendo would prefer if devs tried to utilize the gamepad which could hamper things. I would imagine that the Wii U could support next-gen titles much more easily than the Wii did. Like I said before I'm not a technical expert, but from what I have read it seems that the Wii suffered from lack of ports mostly due to the Hollywood CPU and the way that it handled certain CPU tasks. The speculation I have read indicates that the Wii U will probably end up receiving slightly gimped ports (i.e. less enemies on screen, particle effects, AI etc...). The Wii U is perfectly positioned to be the go-to console for local multiplayer. If they can carve out this niche I wouldn't mind. Local multiplayer really needs to make a comeback and I can see the Wii U doing excellently in that department. I think that once the casual gaming demographic starts to weigh their options for possible home gaming solutions that the Wii U would be their first pick. The gamepad is perfect to draw in people that are already used to gaming on their phones and tablets since it is a input method they enjoy and are already familiar with. Plus, once the initial confusion regarding whether or not the Wii U is a add-on for the Wii is dissipated, then I could see a lot of people seeing a real benefit in upgrading to a Wii U instead of a PS4/Xbox because they already have a bunch of Wiimotes/classic controller/nunchuks to use on the Wii U, especially considering the more than likely higher price points for PS4/Xbox and a potential price cut by Nintendo this holiday season to try and take the wind out of MS and Sony's sails.

Well, since the old thread crashed and burned I figured we could use a new place to actually discuss the PS4. Not that it needs to be said (or does it) but please keep the conversation on the topic of the PS4 guys.
To get back onto discussion: how do you think that the difference in hardware specs will effect the Wii U's potential for multiplat releases?
I was surprised to see that Sony actually went with 8GB of RAM(was expecting 3-4 at the most to be honest) which I would imagine is going to create a bit of a dilemma for developers on the Wii U should they choose to port.
I am not incredibly knowledgeable about tech specs and the potential workarounds that developers could employ, but I feel like the Wii U might be in trouble later on this generation and succumb to a similar fate as the Wii with a drought of actual third-party ports.

Seems this forum is incapable of talking about gender issues without shitting itself and running around with it's pants on fire.
Also not to say anything about eva's arguments but she's already been banned from here like 4 times.
You'd think that we were all little kids running around the playground with baseball bats beating each other over the head with LOUD POINTS and YOU ARE DUM. Yes, it is a touchy issue. The name-calling and overall unfriendly tone of it all though is just too much though and is unwarranted. Disagree with someone, fine. Think someone is an insufferable asshat? Say it, just say it in a tasteful manner that iterates your points and illustrates your feeling on the matter. Is that really so hard? I mean, yeah it's easy to be an asshole on an anonymous forum, but that doesn't mean we have to through civility out the window :/

Wow, just wow. I am all up for civil discourse. Hell, I thrive on it. I have to say that this thread is getting quite hostile though. I understand that women feel marginalized. It's a terrible thing, obviously. I would love to see more women in the industry, it can only mean good things and better games. However, I don't understand the raging really. I still consider the article manufactured controversy (oh, and from Kotaku of all places, how surprising ),however, it is a topic that is worth much more attention for sure, but do we really have to resort to petty arguing and name-calling? On that note to, to get this off of my chest since it is bothering me, but since when did Tigsource become so lax on verbal abuse? I admit it's been awhile since I've posted here regularly, but it is alarming the number of posts I've seen since I've come back that have been downright abrasive. Years ago the ban hammer would have come out quick and hard for verbal abuse as such. I'm just not use to seeing this type of posting on Tigs (Reddit or some random gaming site, sure). Also, this whole topic has completely derailed the original topic. I agree with SirNiko, could this topic be split into a new thread?
