361  Player / General / PS3 Games on: November 09, 2010, 09:30:53 AM
Hey guys!

Planning on getting a PS3 sometime soon, for bluray playback, netflixing and some games (the re-edition of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus next spring was a big decision factor). Thing is, I've never had a playstation before (the only home console I ever had was a Wii, which I still enjoy now). What games are worth buying (both on the indie PSN front and more mainstream stuff)?

I'm planning on getting Little Big Planet with it, along with Critter Crunch on the PSN. That's about all I know though; and I don't trust the reviews of the mainstream websites (it feels like all reviews are "OMG! Awesome graphics! 97% A+++ would play again").

I like every genre, as long as it's a great game and that it doesn't need 200 hours of investment before being able to appreciate it.
What are some of the great games and hidden gems on the platform? Oh also, any cool co-op game would be nice (I heard Little Big Planet is fun in co-op)

Thanks guys!

Finally got my PS3, my personal list so far:

PS3 RetailGames:

- Uncharted is amazing. I loved it- it's really good!
- I heard Uncharted 2 is even better, so looking forward to that one.
- Little Big Planet is pretty fun, especially in co-op.

Some games I've had excellent feedback on and will get in the upcoming weeks and months are:

- 3D Dot Game Heroes - pure retro goodness
- Ratchet and Clank Crack in Time & Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction- 2 action packed hilarious games
- Valkyria - I'm usually not a huge fan of RPGs, but from what I've seen this one is really worth it.
- Prince of Persia - I played part of iton the PC a while ago, loved it.
- Mini Ninjas - I played the beginning of the PC version when it came out, and it is seriously one of the most awesome, underrated games ever.
- Folklore - I played the demo, I really like the concept- some people might not like it as much though.
- God of war 3 - manly bloody action
- God of War collection & Sly Raccoon Collection - 2 remakes of awesome PS2 classic series.
- Brutal Legend - made by the studio who did Psychonauts. Come on.
- Demon's Soul is supposed to be good, according to many TIGers.

PSN Games

- Costume Quest. A hundred times this. It has been years since I've liked a game as much as I like Costume Quest. It's got hilarious dialogues, a pretty nice combat system, collectable items...just amazingness.
- Joe Danger is fucking epic. Think Excitebike on newgen steroids.
- Critter Crunch is just an overload of amazingness. Capybara have outdone themselves.
- Flower is really fun and unique.
- Braid - no need to present that one anymore
- Castle Crashers - made by the guys who did Alien Hominid. Really fun, especially in multi.
- Scott Pilgrim - great 2d pixel goodness brawelr, with Anamanaguchi'd love
- Wipeout HD - my favorite Playstation franchise, in HD. Really cool.
- Echochrome - an extremely original puzzle game
- Shank - think Tarantino and Tartakovsky make a video game.
- Ratchet & Clank: Quest for booty - fits between the other 2, PSN only in the US, bluray release in europe.
- Pacman CE DX: Amazing arcade twist of the original pacman. Get it.
- Auditorium HD: The original was great, now on your PS3 with Move + 3DTV support!
- Spelunker HD: A remake of the original Spelunker. PSN's consolation for not getting Spelunky.

- Pixel Junk Eden, Pixel Junk monsters, Pixel Junk racer, Pixel Junk Shooter - haven't played these yet, but I've heard a lot of good.
- Lumines - great rhythm puzzle game by the guys who made Rez and Meteos.
- Fat Princess - cool concept, fun in multiplayer.

There's also a lot of good stuff bound to come out within the next 12 months: Little Big Planet 2, Alice: Madness Returns, Gran Turismo 5, Ico+Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Child of Eden, The Last Guardian, Portal 2, Bioshock Infinite to name a few. On the PSN side, Outlands, Rayman Origins and From Dust.

Great console overall!  Beer!  Gentleman

Haha, awesome initiative! I bid on the Cave Story and Fez socks- they look amazing! I wish I could do stuff like that. Keep up the good work!

Thinking about changing majors to Comp Sci... but is there anything you learn in CompSci that you can't teach to yourself on the internet? This is an honest question; not dissing any Computer Science majors out there. Because right now I get really depressed every time I go to my Intro to Civil Engineering class...

It really depends on how much self discipline you have. I believe that you can pretty much learn anything by yourself, but there are many things that are just best learned with a formal structure that forces you to think about certain problems (through homework, projects, etc.). In my opinion, a good deal of comp sci. and software engineering falls in this category.

If you are genuinely interested by CS and like it, then switch majors- I don't think you have much to lose, if you hate what you're currently doing.

Disclaimer: if your university's CS department has a good reputation, you'll be eating a lot of maths- real CS is just applied maths and quite research oriented. If you don't like that and want something more programming/industry oriented, look into software engineering (a common degree in certain european countries, but fairly rare in the US).

I'm doing a PhD in CS and have been in 3 different universities in 3 different countries, so I know quite a bit about how it's taught in various places- if you have any questions, feel free to ask!  Smiley

Hugs to you KM, hope everything's getting back on track.

And yeah for universal healthcare!

Seriously, I'm from France, where if I got hurt or sick, I just would go to the doctor/hospital without any second thoughts.
Now that I live in the US, even though I'm insured, going in debt because I get in an accident is a thought that really freaks me out.

Fuckin, 30 Rock is so awesome. 50% of it's awesomeness quotient is because of Alec Baldwin, and the other 50% because of how ridiculously attractive Tina Fey is.

I think you're being too conservative here. Baldwin is awesome, Fey is attractive and hilarious, Tracy Morgan is fucking crazy, Jack McBrayer (Kenneth) is just perfect in his role, and the rest of the cast is usually just dead on.

30 rock is one of my favorite shows ever, up there with Arrested Development.

Yeah Sorano, nice job. I downloaded it last night and played a bit. It was pretty fun.

Thanks! It was really a group effort. There were more 20 people involved in the creation of the title. Still I was the only designer. I also did the level design! That was fun. The sandbox level is probably my pride and joy for the entire project. Smiley

Nice job Sorano! Hand Thumbs Up LeftGrin

Are you kind of wishing you didn't make it a free download now? Wink

Yes. I was thinking this morning. "Shit that's Notch-levels of money right there." My Word!

1. Add in game purchases (level packs, skins, etc.)
2. Huh?
3. Profit!

Good job!
372  Player / Games / Re: Indie Games Highlight on: November 06, 2010, 11:06:40 PM
My personal choices:

- Machinarium, to demonstrate an amazing adventure game
- World of Goo, to demonstrate an amazing puzzle game
- Minecraft, to demonstrate an amazing sandbox game
- Spelunky, to demonstrate an amazing action game
- Cave Story, to demonstrate an amazing platformer

I have many other favorites in this indie world, but these 5 are the ones that struck me the first time I played them.

Wow, for some reason I thought it was only 5...if I had to add 5 more, I guess it would be:

- Braid
- Blueberry Garden
- Defcon
- Knytt
- Osmos

I think I'm taking the job for at least 3 months. There are several games I want to buy and I need to save money for the 3DS launch. And I may get a PS3 soon, I still have to play 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Damn straight! I'm personally getting a PS3 in the upcoming weeks/month or two. So many awesome games, especially on the PSN!

If it were me, I'd say take the job, and stay on your toes for a better opportunity. Some money in the meantime can't hurt.
And you still have your evenings to make games with us Smiley

Thanks a lot guys. I'm in a very sad and lonely place right now, and your words mean a lot. I wish I could meet up with each and every one of you and get you a pint of beer to thank you.

I got a new Nspire CAS graphing calculator (pretty awesome), my license (very awesome), in all practicality, a car, and like $300 to boot.

With the money, I'm got 100 Bullets Vol. 1+2, Shank, a few albums, and I'll be getting a butterfly knife, and I GP2X Wiz (which I decided on since the aesthetic is so much better than the Caanoo, while the specs aren't too much different. Plus the Wiz is more easily transportable).

The rest of the money I'm saving up for a nice rifle. Maybe even a Dragunov.

A knife, rifles and 100 bullets? Do you hunt bears for a living?
377  Player / General / Re: Human Hugs on: November 05, 2010, 02:01:44 PM
Not really, I just moved here 3 months ago. I'm sure I'll make it work in the long run, but damn I'm hurting inside.
378  Player / General / Re: Human Hugs on: November 05, 2010, 11:43:40 AM
Broke up with my 2 year girlfriend. Things were falling apart, it was sort of mutual. Still feel like the worse I've been in years.
And so much work to do for next week (currently doing a phD)

Also we live together, and have rent paid for the month. She's spending the week end at her parents'.
I'll need to start looking for an apartment. Near campus, since I don't have a car and don't make much money.

God. Advice and manly hugs needed.

Pew Pew (2) - a great creative "arena shooter", similar to but different from Geometry Wars. Highly polished and well thought-out with several distinct modes. The first Pew Pew is free and now serves as the test version for the second one, but is still well worth playing

Haha, it's funny that you mention it and that I didn't because it's actually made by one of my friends (and the music is made by another really good friend of mine). Yes, PewPew is awesome!
