Thanks. I was searching for a way to show some depth without drawing bricks in the walls. I didn't want to use a zelda-ish perspective but it turns out it's a lot easier to program ledges and depth related things using it.

It's been about 3 weeks since I posted about my coworker getting into that motorcycle accident and thought I should give an update. Turns out he broke multiple ribs, got a huge gash in his arm, and broke some toes too. Amazingly he walked into the office today to say hi to everyone. So yeah, he'll still be out for awhile but he's recovering quickly and gets to keep his job!

I was tweaking the filter in photoshop and thought it looked cool swinging it back and forward in the preview window. I just took screen shots of that preview window every few steps and animated it.

Cool design but I think it might be the black outline that's hurting it. It looks more like water. Try removing the white spots, the outline on the back where the fog is trailing off, and the outline on the pieces that are separated from the critter. Some nice browns/blacks would work well too like in the examples Bones posted.
