Generally, I agree with John. Even some of the first designs were pretty ridiculous... One character I think has gotten a little better, though, is mitsurugi. Old (soul edge/blade):  Generic japanese fighter guy imo. New (soul calibur 5):  Seasoned warrior with feet-won't-stop-getting-bigger disorder. I've only played Soul Blade. I guess they made him older in SC5? I dunno. I think he's more interesting as a character as an older person.

Seasons and I started on a warmup game... not really a game, just an engine. It has your basics: movement, mouselook, shooting, collisions, one enemy.  This is made in Game Maker... Going to be a pain. I'm going to (try to) make a primitive level editor the week before it starts, hopefully that will be of some help to others. The goal is a layer system, with each layer being a floor of the level. The goal is to make levels more visually interesting by varying the heights of some platforms. Maybe if I figure out slopes and stuff, it will be cooler...

For pixel art, I use GIMP, because I like to take advantage of the layers and palettes. GraphicsGale is also nice, as it has better animation support.
Unrelated: I think it's high time we make one megathread for these kinds of questions: "What program should I use for...?"

Nothing against college, but i don't think it's for everyone... I don't like when some people act as though college is the only way to succeed in life... especially when they're ditzy.
