I don't see the point in making negative comments about your own work.
I agree, but that is something I've always done and probably will always do. I simply don't seem to be able to quit doing that. Any advice regarding this subject would be appreciated, because I generally do this with everything, and I find it very annoying, not to mention the folks around me.

As a general comment, if you're scared a song will tarnish your reputation, maybe don't publish/upload it?
I didn't say this at any point Wink If it happened to be a huge failure in my opinion, I wouldn't have submitted it. I just said that it was kind of rushed.
ps. what reputation? Grin

Thank you for the honest feedback! Smiley These challenges are a wonderful way to get some!

A last-minute-entry! It didn't end up to be very good as I started it today from literally nothing.

http://soundcloud.com/redapricorn/a-not-so-frantic-shift/s-f30Is

Sooo.... the track features 'Normal Section' (00:01 - 00:20), 'Transition' (00:20 - 00:30), and two different 'difficulty levels' (00:32 - 01:14 and 1:36 - 2:18).

Just to clarify things Tongue

Alright, finished this.

Spoilers, perhaps

The story was... touching, moving, shocking...
It just...made me feel a lot of things. It's hard to say
anything about it. Sickness of mind, perhaps.
It was good and kept me watching as I wanted to know the ending.

The melodies and harmonies felt rather random sometimes, and
the cacophonous phases related to eating kind of burned my ears.

But not bad, not bad at all. It was really good.

Hey folks, you should check this stuff out, it's worth the thirty-three minutes it takes!

Neat idea! What I particularly liked is the clavinet sound and motive at the beginning and end of the track. The music's more "Warm." than "Hot!", though.
Thank you for the truly-constructive feedback! Yeah, I agree that it ended up in being a lot more Warm than Hot music, but no can do Shrug

Also, your drum sounds and programming could use some work, they're a bit too plastic-sounding for my taste.
Hmm, any examples of good drum sound/programming?

You might also want to invest in speakers or at least headphones that help you with the low-end, the bass is creating quite a bit of mud on my big speakers.
Ahh, I think I found the problem. I'm mostly using Logitech G35 (a gaming headset) as my headphones, and they have this 5:1 surround-sound option, which I usually keep switched on, since games and music sound better in general with it. Now that you said it, I switched it off to regular stereo, and the bass indeed is too deep/low/loud, that's my mistake! And about the speakers, I don't have very good ones and am planning to get a pair eventually, could you/anyone here perhaps recommend good, cost-effective ones?

Thank you again for the feedback, and congrats to the top three! Wink
5  Developer / Audio / Re: How do you keep yourself structured? on: January 26, 2013, 12:16:05 AM
I might have had an idea of a melody or a general style of a song I want to do next in my head, but usually I just sit down, open my DAW and start composing == I start experimenting with instruments and melodies, and then just nail it down. I haven't really seen a problem with that.

As Calum said, it's important to find a person who knows about music to give constructive critique of your work.

wow Shocked
I like that glitter and the atmosphere in general

on a side note: anyone could perhaps help me with drawing "straight" lines? Now I just sketch everything, and I don't really like it

I'd rather do it this way: the host still gives all the feedback, and chooses the 3 best, of which others would choose the winner from. Maybe about 1-3 days of voting time.

I worked on some art, and created a mockup.

It's better, although the contrast still seems pretty low to my eye. Perhaps try darkening the ground a bit more?
13  Developer / Art / Re: show us some of your pixel work on: January 14, 2013, 12:16:01 PM
Something, I wasn't really sure where I should've posted this, but here it is anyway. (yeah it's pixelled, maybe it should be in the art thread tho :/ )

The hair's really meh and you can recognise a heavy influence from a certain graphic novelist's style :I
Aside from that, I like it although it's bad

edit: oops, paged
Old:

New:

+ New campfire with stones (all pixelwork this time)
+ Some flowers and ground detail
- Removed one layer of trees. I feel it improves readability of the trees in the front.
* Possibly there may be some UI elements next to the item grid to the left to fill the space.

Progress or not?
@eigen - number two does it for me. That extra activity in the foreground makes all the difference. Really lovely.

agreeing with the posts above, that walk animation looks rather awkward though
