some games get by just fine without any real visuals (interactive fiction, roguelikes, tbs)
Yeah they can, but they're so much cooler when do have nice graphics. For instance, Crawl Stone Soup would look tons more awesome if it had a graphical design like Diablo 3 or Dota 2.

What happened to the baby characters? Baby Peach is my favourite!

I've been using Firefox for a while mainly because I already have all my bookmarks in it and for the addon Foxreplace (so I can replace words or acronyms I don't like), but I like Chrome since it has better performance (especially with HTML5).

So much of that HUD seems unneccessary or badly placed, "lets take up as much of the vertical game space as possible! We could make it like the movies and go for 2.35:1 ratio!"

This game is too boring for my taste, Crawl SS is a lot more fun, only good thing I noticed in this game is that it uses more detailed graphics than most roguelikes.

I haven't really played many strategy games, but in Advance Wars there are various types of terrains that affect defensive (maybe offensive too, can't remember) power and movement range, they're represented by grass/trees/rivers/mountains etc. which look a lot cooler than a dull black and white board.

Tried this very briefly at my cousin's house, one thing I found annoying is that the thick HUD is along the bottom of the screen... I'd like to try it on the righthand side, the vertical space feels extremely cramped at the moment (played it on 16:9 screen). As you go back and forth to the creepline for lasthits, the creeps are often on the very edge of the screen, when really there could be a lot more vertical vision if that HUD wasn't using up so much space. Aside from that the engine felt pretty good, the graphics were very nice too.

Played Rayman Origins a bit, the background graphics are really beautiful (character designs are ugly however), though I gave up cause it was too easy (seemed like it was just the usual boring collectathon).

Played Bit Trip Runner today for a few minutes, and was reminded of this thread. Text in the game was almost unreadable due to the "retro" style, couldn't bear it.
