I'm gonna admit I'm opting out of the abundant documentation here, But does anyone know if this dev version of the headset will be / is the same specs as the one that will ship commercially?
If it's just cosmetically different I don't care, but if it's going to have significantly crappier framerate/resolution/latency etc. then i'm not sure I want

Developer / Design / Re: For Discussion: How do you handle losing in your game?

You can try to trivialize the loss, use some kind of humor to make the player feel as if the loss was not devastating but was instead kind of funny.
I did this in my game Kingdoms Collide by playing a sample of a baby crying to the losing team to remind them that crying about their loss would make them like a baby and they should instead remember they are playing a fun game and cheer up, I still find it funny to hear the crying baby clip when i lose at KC.
Another thing you can do is redirect the emotion of the defeat into motivation, Call of Duty 4 did this really well I think, on losing a round the team's announcer would say something encouraging like "we'll get this next one!" or something else to get played pumped for vengeance
Those are the only 2 ways I can think of for now, there is probably more techniques, hope that helped

I think it would be cool/better if someone developed a light gun, like the playstation had (time crisis/point blank) but with really a good recoil mechanism. I'm not sure how you'd make something give a solid kick but having the pistol attached to motors on your desk doesn't seem like the right way

Developer / Design / Re: Do you think insanely high bullet damage is what we would need in FPS games?

Bullets need to have high damage because the winning or the gunfight needs to be decided quickly.
Example time; Halo - you have the element of surprise, you leap from cover, you were first to take aim, you fire the first shot... and continue to spray hundreds of bullets... on and on... eventually your enemy throws a sticky grenade onto your face and ends up winning the encounter. Or worse, in the time you have been pumping tissue paper ammunition into your oponent another one has appeared to help him out of trouble.
If bullets don't hurt most of the elements of a gun encounter mean nothing; positioning stealth cover aim initiative backup etc.
all becomes meaningless when you know you still have a good 30 seconds of health left in you after you start getting pounded

I know some guy on here was working on something similar, but it was more like a grindy, stat-building Diablo-ized version of the game.
Yeah, that's what Miner Wars looked like too, They totally missed the point of 6DOF, if it doesn't give weak people motion sickness, you're doing it wrong!

Developer / Business / Re: Have you ever exhibited at PAX Prime? If so, how much?

The Indie Mega Booth does exhibit at PAX Prime, as Eric said. In terms of space, it's no different than a normal exhibitor's space; the only difference is that all of your neighbors are other indie devs and there are some space-wide Mega Booth marketing materials as well. There is a slight price break for exhibiting with the IMB, but this last show it was too big to get any sponsorships which is where the huge savings can occur. The smallest space you can get is a 10x10; the prices vary show to show, but expect it to be $1600-$2000 for the space. Unfortunately, that is only the beginning of the costs. Rentals for TVs, tables, chairs, etc. are really expensive. Shipping your own stuff and paying drayage fees is also expensive, so if you can hand carry your own stuff that's the best way to save money. The electricity will run you $100 for the minimum and goes up from there. Hopefully you don't require internet, because getting a line to your booth can be more expensive than the booth itself. (The building wi-fi is basically unusable during the show.) So if you can bring your own TV/stand and can get by with the bare minimum they provide, you can probably just spend about $2200 for a 10x10. Not sure if you want to print a banner, info cards, buttons, or whatever, but if you do, this thread has some useful details in it. OK cool, well if that's the case I'll definitely ask about the indie booth (if PAX get back to me) About 2k is what I was expecting a booth to cost i guess. Out of curiosity, are you speaking from experience when you are saying these figures? Or that's what you've heard from other people who have exhibited?

Phil Fish didn't secure the deal for the PAX spot, that was Trap Door Games, http://www.trapdoorinc.com/#gamesOr, just email the PAX organizers directly, you would have to if you wanted space, so might as well get the ball rollin' Yeah, I've already emailed them days ago, I've still got no reply, that's why I'm asking here in the meantime

If you look at the about page it looks like there was an indie megabooth at PAX Prime in 2012. So I imagine it would be back this year. Even so, with "50+ developers" in the one "megabooth" I imagine it would be a terribly cramped way to exhibit, I still want to hear about prices for a proper dedicated exhibitor spot

I really enjoyed Descent 1 and 2 and other 6DOF shooters I dont remeber the names of, they used to be fairly popular, but these days not so much. I've seen there was a new one that got greenlit recently, 'miner wars'? or something like that, it didn't really seem to capture what I loved about 6DOF so i ignored that. Are there people out there who still rike 6DOFs?

The indie megabooth is only a part of PAX East IFAIK (which has already passed for this year) the reason I'm asking this question is because they never will release the prices of exhibiting at pax prime, the only way to know what each exhibitor paid for their spot is to ask
