If only you people know about the attitudes and egos about your favorite artists, musicians, directors, authors... competitions should judge on quality of work and not the character and social niceties of the creator. Whether you buy the game I guess is up to you.
It is weird how much junk is shoveled in, probably just for publicity. Indies who put triple the effort they probably do into a AAA game making a small percentage of the money they would at the job. Having a good idea is hard to come by I guess.

(ala john campbell) The aesthetic is hip and pretty familiar, I hope you're taking the time to write a complete design document because I'm a sucker for slow exploration games. My advice to figure out what could make it personal and unique compared to say Journey or Cairo.

Another timewasting idea coming from lifelong nerdiness and late nights. Considering starting a super-hipster-social-tumblr-blogefnsbijytrnds Us living in the Stupid Ages sometimes are kept awake by tiny LEDs scattered across the room, burning into tiny insomniac-constellations. Here's mine: Post 'em!

Well now that that's out of the way...
The pros of doing something generic are a laziness of design, saving you time, energy, and money that comes from making interesting and new things. You also can "ride the wave" so to speak, like Angry Birds and clones of Angry Birds and clones of Angry Birds clones, all very successful. There's no personal risk, and a lot of profit. If you like zombies and wizards and elves, and want to see them go on forever then this is for you.
The cons of doing something unique is that you have to reflect, personally, on the images and themes that make for a good story and something to say worthwhile. This can cause emotional stress and take years of your life to get right. It's also expensive to find artists who you can beat into shape to use your new vision. Describing something that may never have been described before. You leave yourself vulnerable to attacks since you bear all the risk of the idea and its implementation. There will be no market for you to look for except people who are willing to accept strange ideas and risk their money for something they're not sure they want, interested in your ideas personally. You may see people hating your idea because its not something they want or care about.
I think it's pretty clear which way indies, with no pressure from marketing directors, ad agencies, or stock holders, should go.

Ah, you're working with Loomis. He's seems to be popular these days, not a bad choice. Keep this stuff up daily, update the post as much as you need. You could start adding some form to these figures soon to start basic anatomy. What kamax said is right, and once you learn about shin construction such mistakes won't happen.

This could be thrilling with Kinect. It could require you holding your hands out like on a steering wheel and making the brrrrrrr-brrrrr noise to go faster. Maybe some running in place. Clothes also make you go slower.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do with those grids, but knowing that from straight on the legs (crotch to floor) is the halfway point for the body. Most people starting out make legs way too short, I remember them looking weird myself, could be because of the perspective humans have when looking down. But just for anatomy its a great thing to remember.

Trying my best to not take sides here, but if you don't think Fez should win, submit a better game? No competition can be as level a playing field as you want unless everyone starts out broke.

"You're saying they should stay in the closet!! How dare you!!"
It's sort of a pendulum thing, swinging to extremes. I'd much prefer a civil rights march than a pride parade. Of course it shouldn't be a secret, but there's no need to let it define who you are.

LGBT having the rainbow flag was a really bad idea. The point of the rainbow is that it is the whole visible spectrum (politics of the ultraviolet is a topic for another day). You can't take a symbol that meant peace for all men and apply it to the agenda of one group. Same with pride parades... this is a message to any minority out there: if you want to fit in to society, don't throw a pride parade. I'd post pictures but that'd just be overkill.
I'm just talking about the meaning of symbols here, I wouldn't talk about my views on sexual orientation if you payed me.

This competition is now thoroughly unofficial and is focused on the fall theme of decay, figures in the fog and stories around the campfireFall Folklore.
This is only because a folklore competition should be official someday, and I don't want to blow such an amazing theme with my poor management attempts.
The competition now ends at the end of the 30th day of October, just at the witching hour on All-Hallows-Even.
