I've never been a fan of hooking up computers to the TV (especially as all my computers have been poor enough that it delays or lags when I do) but if you do then I guess this is a pretty nice feature. I'm not the target audience, but it's a pretty understandable thing. Also, something to consider: if they do go ahead with linux, then the two combined could mean a cheap computer box-console that plays Valve games (and others, when ports arrive) without having to license Windows for its production, which would be a good thing for their bottom line.

Is this really the standard of journalism we can expect?

I particularly like how the actual article, without the big tumblr-style picture header, is smaller than not only the related links section but also the enormous "subscribe to reply" banner and text." The only reason it even breaks five lines is the fantastic "looks good on a tablet" aesthetic they've chosen that reduces everything to a tiny column on my monitor. I mean, come on, I write more prose than that in my forums posts, or in my terrible articles on Czechoslovakia, and I do it for free. Why is it that when gawker switched to that style of formatting everyone hated it, but here it's ok?

In order to reply to this post you must send me $25, by the way.

EDIT: since the post is mysteriously replaced with a PLEASE LOG IN message, I provide the wordcount for illustration.

Thank god the site also has the archives of OFFWORLD, home of the finest gaming journalism of all time. Let's read:

Halo is a place where I feel peaceful. It’s partly, I grant  you, the pistol in my hand and the rocket-launcher on my back, both of  which take the stress out of day-to-day life in a way in which is often  underestimated. It’s also, partly, the beauty. But there is something  more profound. There’s a solitude to be found on the beaches of Silent  Cartographer.
A tranquility in the scene which has more in common with a photo from a  inspirational poster than a videogame. As I pick my way across the  beach, I find myself instinctively looking for another set of footprints and listening out for the voice that says ‘My son, that was when I carried you’. Although, this being Halo,  that voice would surely more likely say, ‘My son, that’s when I  stickied you with three grenades"

<RinkuHero> i don't know why he'd think that is good writing

It's a fucking smack in the face to their supporters who gave them money to purchase this terrible blog template from a sad middle aged hipster's wordpress site.

Also, if they need to charge money to comment what was the kickstarter for? What the fuck did the money go towards?

I'm going back to indiegames.com -- at least when they sell out they don't charge you to disapprove of it
465  Player / General / Re: venuspatrol.com on: September 10, 2012, 12:04:34 PM
Fun fact: you have to pay to subscribe, which also gets you the kickstarter bonuses as part of the subscription. So kickstarting basically gets you nothing (or worse than nothing, since you only get a subscription as part of kickstarting if you paid $25 -- anything less and you are literally just out the money for no reason)

It looks a lot like my old tumblr to be honest.

ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS

The new Indiefort Championship Bundle is available.

You get 3 games for 3.99, 6 for 6.99, etc whatever.

Highlights include

Tiny & Big
Demise: Ascension
Air Buccaneers HD

but there's other stuff worth checking out, of course. Any thoughts?

The only doctor-who-related-show I have legitimately enjoyed was the Children of Earth series of Torchwood. So that's, what, a week out of several decades of production. Hope it was worth it.

My issue with Torchwood is all the sex scenes they try to include, it comes off like they're trying to be edgy; but it isn't.

Yes. Note I didn't mention any of the other seasons; that is why.

I will say I do not watch much Doctor Who. But... most of the Tennant episodes I've seen with that red haired woman were written terribly. Look out, aliens have put poison carburetors in all the cars; they're singing a song; red haired lady is the messiah. I mean, it's just... it's just terrible. No actor could redeem such storylines.

I don't understand any of this criticism because in my view Mike Rose is bringing us important news and information. For example, I read the site today and I'm glad that sony is supporting the poor independents by funding them and allowing them to become part of the corporate structure whereby their creativity can be subsumed and incorporated within the overarching hegemonic design template of sony entertainment thereby creating a new and unique synergy of game creation.

I was somewhat disappointed that some of the more interesting powers died so soon -- the blackmailer especially. Fraxcell actually picked one of the werewolves immediately (I forget which) which could have been interesting if he hadn't died literally hours later.

The theme of the roles, I thought, was information -- everyone had control of information in some way, whether it was Inanimate's ability to prove himself or Fraxcell's blackmailing or the maid's eavesdropping. The only two who didn't have this were the colonel (who was instead the only werewolf to know how many there actually were, among other things) and poe, whose power of confession was at least information related. Speaking of which, I was certainly annoyed when poe, who could only die by lynching, was immediately lynched and removed from play. Oh well Wink

Honestly, I'm surprised the Abraham/Fission pair survived as long as it did. You guys won a bunch of coin tosses, is all I can say.
476  Player / General / Re: TIGSTWG XXIV: Werewolf Among the Pigeons [DAY FOUR] on: September 06, 2012, 12:55:36 AM
END OF FOURTH DAY

The votes were cast, the choice made – Fission Mailed was to be killed, and quickly – this werewolf menace needed to be ended as soon as possible. Tanner and Geeze went up to his room to break the news… but it seemed there was already someone else in there with him: Abraham YG, who had somehow found a pot of tea somewhere in the hotel and was pouring himself a glass as they came in.

“You’re too late; I won’t let you take *cough cough cough* -- I won’t let you take my Fission Mailed from me! All my life I’ve been alone and you choose to kill the one man I found who understands me, even if he is French? Why couldn’t you just let us be?”
Suddenly, Doctor Tanner understood what seemed wrong with the pair – Fission Mailed, he realized, wasn’t breathing. Shocked, he ran to examine the man, but Geeze stopped him. “Wait – who knows what a desperate man might do? We still haven’t found out where he put the Colonel’s revolver, you know?”

Slowly, Abraham stirred his tea. “Don’t worry, I won’t give you the satisfaction of believing you were right about us. Fission is gone, and now… I go to join him. You’ll never understand our love, but maybe this will… help you.”

As he drained the tea, the room filled with the scent of almonds emanating from the pot on the table. Abraham laughed until his voice reduced to wheezes and coughs… and then silence. The lovers had both died as they had lived: together.

FOURTH NIGHT

At least, reflected Geeze, the nightmare must be over.  The two lovers were surely the last two werewolves; they had killed together… and died together. He bid Doctor Tanner good-night and looked in on Inanimate, who was reading in bed (who reached for the knife on his bedstand that he had apparently found somewhere for protection before realizing who his visitor was), and finally went to bed. Soon  he could see about getting out of this place, hotel be damned. Too many bad memories.

Inanimate was relieved, if upset, by the news that the two lovers had passed on. Perhaps this nightmare, he reflected, could be over – his trip was ruined, true, but at least he would be safe at home before too long.

As for what Doctor Tanner thought that night, the events that followed should show that well enough.

It was late that night when Inanimate awoke with a start – was that a noise from downstairs? He reached for his knife (although innocent, he wasn’t stupid) and opened the door slowly to behold a terrible sight – Geeze lay dying on the hallway floor with a hideous beast towering over him. There was little he could do: though the creature seemed tired from its earlier exertion, with no one else to worry about there was little danger of being caught with his new victim.

“If it helps,” said Doctor Tanner sympathetically,” you were right about Fission Mailed. But not, alas, about me.”

He collected his things and went out the door. Around him, the snow was just starting to thaw. It seemed like it was going to be a beautiful day.

Yeah, source SDK is free these days (since... Alien Swarm, I believe), so as long as it doesn't actually use any assets from any of the source games it can be completely free.

Well, since there's no activity, I'll write up the end of the day tonight I suppose.
As in, in... seven hours?
