Yea, the face needs more contrast. But be careful about where you stick those blues/purples. They're needed in the shadows/boney areas of the face, but I think the fleshy parts--the cheeks, the neck, etc, actually need more warmth to them (orange and pink).

Here's an awesome conceptart.org thread that might help!

Also, what app are you painting in? You might find more intuitive blending control if you play around with PaintTool Sai or ArtRage, rather than photoshop/gimp.

I think you've got a pretty solid start here!

I agree with the comment about the vignette effect being distracting.

But I think the biggest thing keeping it from looking more epic though is your fog and lighting. Right now you've essentially got gray pea soup. It's perfect for rainy london, but not so good for sweeping, epic vistas like the kind you see in SOTC.

Introduce some color to the fog (a mostly off-white-but with-hints-of-babyblue-or-peach might be a starting place) and bring the density way way way down. I don't know what tech you're using, but if possible you could try having a sun-based fog color shift (a sunlight In-Scattering color and sunight Opposite color). That can really add to the realistic nature of fog. Additionally, pushing the fog's brightness up a lot can help to make it feel more like atmospheric scattering, which is what you probably want, rather than actual 'fog'.

Regarding the light--kick the sun's brightness up more! Also, give it a slight tint as well. Lighting or Fogging with pure white is a sure way to bring down the vividness of any scene. In that SoTC screen that Sandoval posted the light is yellow tinted..probably like R250 G245 B230 or something.

Goodluck!

Hi all! I'm joe. I used to work pro as a game artist, but I'm taking a short break to give this indie thing a try. Wish me luck!
