1  Community / Townhall / Crowdfunding Campaign for Sci Fi Deckbuilding Game Galactic Council on: April 10, 2013, 01:06:51 PM
Hey Everyone!

Well today is the big day. I’ve officially launched the Kickstarter campaign for my game project, Galactic Council. I have worked obsessively on this game for pretty much this entire past year, and I’m far beyond my December drop date, har. I’ll leave the details of the project in the link itself, but I would like to take a quick moment to point out why I think it deserves attention.

The number one goal of my newly forged LLC company is to design software that gives people a workspace for creativity. What better starting project than a game, a format I am very comfortable with, to start working on this goal o’ mine? At its core, Galactic Council is about giving every single community member the ability to join in the creative process. I am simply a coder or conduit for concepts that smarter and wiser men than I championed, and as such I am only interested in calling myself one of many co-creators of the experience. I just want to read people’s stories, and provide a platform for them to hone their work.

If you are a science-y type person, I would ask you what your favorite science fiction stories are growing up - I’m confident you’ll have an answer for me. I believe science fiction is that collective “creative space” where our society dreams about our potential, fantasizes about a better future, and warns of impending ethical dilemmas not yet argued. It engages our young minds and helps direct their focus to our mutual hopes for the future. In my eyes, there just can’t BE enough of this kind of work. My project is unabashedly about advocating - with every toolset I have available - for this essential form of art.

This is why I can heartily urge you to donate to the campaign. Even if a deckbuilding card game isn’t something you’re interested in, I believe there are still many good reasons to contribute. Hell, if you like any card game and science fiction, this game will be something you’ll want to check out some day. So, all that being said, please consider contributing to the campaign. If you can’t, I completely understand, but please consider telling a friend about this project. I can totally bring this vision to life, but only with a little bit of your help!

Thanks guys, wish me luck!!

2  Feedback / Playtesting / Galactic Council - my first game, an adaptive sci-fi deck building bonanza on: March 26, 2013, 11:42:48 AM
Hey everyone!

I need some feedback on the first (ok - 4th if you count garage made board games Smiley ) game I've created, Galactic Council.

The current site (found at http://bit.ly/ZXemhn) is a working prototype for a much larger vision, a community driven game website where members are encouraged to try their hand at card, rule, lore, and content creation - all under the umbrella of the game universe's lore (each player represents a member of the Galactic Council, battling other members for territory and resources and voting on how such battles are played out.)

Create-A-Card Feature

I've built the game's framework using web technology (HTML5, php, jquery, ajax), allowing for faster prototyping, frequent updating, and a bevy of stat tracking. This means that you don't need to download anything to play the game (not even flash), just grab an up-to-date version of Chrome, FireFox, or Internet Explorer and start playing. This is one of my design philosophies - allow players access to their player accounts anywhere, on any browser-capable device.

While you are there, you can read a bit more about the overall goals of the project here: http://www.samthewebsiteguy.com/galacticcouncil/promo_content/about_this_project.php

I am super serious about this project, I am dedicated to creating a game environment that is directed by and for the community that plays it. I would appreciate any feedback - if it would keep you from coming back to the site, I'd like to know about it so I can fix it. A concept like this just won't work without happy & contributing players!

Thanks for your time guys,

Hey everyone,

Dropping my introduction here. You can call me Sam or h1ff. I've been playing games for over 25 years now. In the past year, I've started developing my own game - Galactic Council. It is a sci-fi deckbuilding/ccg type browser-based game that I have grand community-sourced visions for. I've been learning different aspects of software construction for just about 10 years now, so I'm really excited to be bringing my first game to the public.

So I'll list my big 3 favorites -
1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
2. Super Metroid
3. Final Fantasy Tactics

Close 4th and 5th goes to D2: LOD and FFVII, of course. Glad to be posting here, I'm looking forward to further involving myself in the Indie Games scene.
