Can this model of short, highly replayable games be applied to single player games too? yeah, thats what roguelikes and "endless" action games are, basically. anyway, a good example of a game that accomodates different levels of time investment is pokemon. you can either just casually play through and beat the elite four (or whatever it is these days) because the game is easy enough for that, you can try to "catch em all" or you can get into pvp and dive deep into the stat system. many of the better mmos and "casual" games have similar things going on.

I dunno, while Arcanum wasnt as popular as bioware or black isle games, it has been mentioned in every community i have been part of.
Siege of Avalon, Legacy of Qin and Throne of Darkness however...
ya arcanum is a cult classic

Carefully avoiding the unwanted gaze of the teacher, you’re free to sneak some time on the Gameboy (renamed “Game Girl”) that you’re hiding under your desk, using the NES pad you’re holding in real life. me in highschool simulator 2014 anyway is it, like, bad that this is the first oculus rift thing that sounds actually interesting to me?

ya that's probably true for the steam prices, but some retail prices are pretty ridiculous, particularly for console games. why are console games more expensive than pc games anyway (there's almost always a 10 euro price difference between console and pc versions of a game). pc games are actually reasonably priced at 40-50 euros (i still don't buy too many new pc games tho haha)

i can usually get the games i want where i live. one problem is that console gams are hideously overpriced. some new releases are 70 euros (a little less than 90 dollars) and the average is 60. they also never drop below 20. this is why i have pretty much stopped buying new-ish console games. i just can't justify dropping that much on a single videogame unless i'm *really* hyped (which is rare). there are also very few dedicated videogame stores here, i buy most physical copies of games from electronics chain stores.
i don't think the differences in availability matter that much anymore in this age of digital distribution and online retailers, tho the price problem persists. on steam you often just pay the dollar price in euros meaning games are about 20% more expensive than in the US.

For example, in old games, you could immediately recognize interactive objects. Nowadays, there's so much garbage and props lying around, to make that "realistic" look, that you simply do not know which objects can be interacted with. Often, you also simply do not know which direction to go or simply look at, during scripted scenes or normal gameplay, and you feel lost in that huge 3D world. There is no clear focus on what to do, because it's not abstract enough. Can you say any examples of games that make you feel like that? I've never felt anything like that while playing a game. i don't actually agree with zeha's overall point but bioshock is a big offender. they literally had to "cheat" by making interactable objects glow. there's an option to disable it but you're going to spend a lot of time pixel hunting if you do.

i would say its sort of a hybrid srpg/jrpg. the heavy combat focus and long(-ish) battles and complexity of the mechanics are all very srpg-ish. the combat itself is definitely srpg-like as well with its focus on planning ahead and positioning. tho it does have the weird "semi real time" aspect, so there's that. it actually kinda reminded me of valkyria chronicles when i first played it. but yeah, everything else in the game follows a traditional jrpg format and yes, the plot and characters are pretty lame. but at least the setting is sort of neat and its not very plot heavy so the bad plot doesnt get in the way too much.

haha yeah the controls are kinda odd but the battle system is neato. probably the most overlooked jrpg of the last couple years (probably because it was advertised as a jrpg in the final fantasy/tales/etc. vein when its really closer to a srpg). how the fuck do i enlarge myy hero gauge? please tell me its not plot related its partly plot related. you get shards from bosses but you also find some on the world map iirc

back on topic: there are some games i never actually finished even tho i really like them (some are even big faves). these include: shadow of the colossus, gothic 2, nier, vagrant story.
i also wanna replay morrowind but actually do quests this time. always just played it as a pure sandbox and never got very far beyond like the 2nd main quest. i don't even know what the story is tbh, despite the fact that i consider it a formative experience that changed the way i think about videogames.

Dream Quest is hands down one of the ugliest commercial games ive ever played, but damn is it good. and it's not really like anything else. it's a cross between a deckbuilding game and a "roguelike"(likelikelikelike). basically you crawl through single screen dungeon floors while engaging in card based battled with enemies, building your deck and leveling up. it's very difficult too, lots of tough decisions about which cards to take and so on. also because enemies have different resistances and special abilities, you're going to get your ass kicked pretty hard if you try to base your deck around a single OP combo (as is so often the case with deckbuilders). you have to keep it flexible. it's really strange tho, because contrary to what the "babbys first game maker game" graphics would have u believe, the UI design, the music and even the writing are all pretty good (this is not ur standard fantasy schlock).
