Original or remixed?

Would it be ok if I made a disturbing 8-bit theme for the Mondo Medicals level?

I'd really like to make a track for this. Are there any 8-Bit tracks that need to be done?

Yes I stayed away from Mature-rated games, because it is aimed at adults and they are typically more skilled at games.

Also, you (forum) are saying that it amounts to genre familiarity... "Genre: Puzzle, Difficulty: High", "Genre: Action-Adventure, Difficulty: Medium" Etc. Or "Difficulty: Recommended 14+"

However, for your specimen perhaps a "Difficulty: Stupid and frustrating design" would be more appropriate.
Actually I rather enjoyed Zack and Wiki. It was an excellent game, even with it's insane difficulty.

When you say Zak and Wiki got hard, can you give an example? I've never played the game, and my understanding was that it's actually a bit on the easy side.
Well, it starts out easy. Very easy actually. But by the end it gets so mind-numbingly difficult, I had to use a guide a number of times. A lot of things in the game are "figure out to do with this object that you got from solving a puzzle. But if you use it in the wrong spot, you can never get it again and you have to retry." It's a very trial-and-error game. The last level, in particular, is almost painful in its difficulty. For instance, there are multiple parts where you have to use sand that you get from the beginning of the level and use the wind to blow it across the stage and make a robot malfunction. Also, there are things very few people would ever think to use in certain spots. It just gets rediculous.

And I can see what you are saying, chrknudsen. I can see how it can be insulting to the player, but a "Difficulty: High" wouldn't do to much harm, IMO.

Ok, how about this: Should there be a sign warning players about the difficulty on the box?

A while ago I picked up a game called Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure for the Wii. It was a point-and-click puzzle game with bright, colorful, kid-friendly visuals. As I started the game, I found a charming, simple little puzzle game that was actually pretty addicting (as the game progressed I went on to love the game, but that's another matter). As I progressed through the game, it got harder and harder, naturally. BUT by the end of the game, the difficulty became almost unbearable. It became one of the most difficult games I'd ever played.
A similar case happened with Professor Layton and the Curious Village for the DS, but that wasn't too bad.

Now, this hasn't just happened in puzzle games. This is from games like Mario Galaxy 2, Viewtiful Joe, and N+ (yes I know the original was also very difficult). Excellent, kid-friendly games. But sometimes the difficulty can just get rediculous. Now, I don't mind difficulty at all (unless it renders the game unplayable), but this led me to a thought.

Should games be rated according to difficulty as well as content?

I bring this up because if a game appeals to a wide audience, should it warn them that it has a high level of difficulty? And no, I'm not saying that all kid-friendly games should be easy.

Or, you could pull a Silent Hill Shattered Memories and call it a "re-imagining".

Beyond Good and Evil should be on more peoples list.
This. I totally forgot. Great game.

Take Bionic Commando ReArmed. It is a direct remake of the original NES game, but with a few added moves, co-op, and better bosses (instead of enemies just running around a room). That is a true update.

Now, BCR 2 will be a bastardization of the franchise because they are adding the jump mechanic. Blasphemy.

A game where you have to save a princess from a castle.

Okami (My personal favorite game)

Guardian of Paradise (a short, but good one)

3D Dot Game Heroes (in the running for best PS3 game)

Grand Theft Auto (when you think about it, it iskind of like Zelda)

Ark 22 (pretty lengthy game)

KennEH, that is some creepy music.

Javet, you remind me that I want to play Okami (I have the game, just haven't played much of it).
Rarely has a game come even close to matching the story, emotion, and quality the Okami has to offer. You NEED to play it. It's the best game I've ever played.
375  Developer / Design / Re: Boss Fights on: June 06, 2010, 12:32:51 PM
For me there are a number of different ways a boss should or could be.

1. EMOTIONAL:
This is one thing that boss battles seldomly do. Most bosses focus on being gigantic and really difficult. This isn't a bad thing, but most bosses are just created as a obstruction in your path. There really isn't a point to putting them there. Now, if the fight was emotional, like you were fighting someone you truly cared about, it makes the fight MUCH more memorable. Take the Toroko fight in Cave Story. I really felt bad about having to fight and I stalled for a few minutes just to see if anything would happen. To me boss battles shouldn't just be giant obstructions to ge through. I think they should be major turning points in the story.

2. Freaking Huge:
Now, before you judge, listen (read). Huge bosses... are awesome. But most big bosses are just ONE giant sprite with one massive weak spot. These huge bosses I believe should be multi-leveled bosses with each tier requiring a new strategy. The giant fat boss towards the end of God of War 2. Even Cave Story's secret final boss (while not FREAKING HUGE) used this technique.

3. Small:
While a lot of bosses focues on being OMGBIG, some of gaming's greatest battles come from small battles but from really important characters. For instance, I've played games with bosses that are gi-huge-ant but with final bosses that are just one man. Some of the more memorable ights are one-on-one fights that are all skill based. Red Steel 2 does a great job of this.

I'll comeof with more later... Probably.
376  Developer / Audio / Re: Musicians: Favorite instrumental moves? on: June 04, 2010, 07:26:53 AM
Well, I don't normally play around with anythig to complicated. I find that the common audience can't really appreciate "musical genius". They just want something that ultimately sounds cool. I don't know, but for some reason I most always stay away from B, F#, and occaisionally E. I really don't know why.

Monster Hunter Tri has a surprisingly epic soundtrack.
So far my favorite is this one.

Shadow of the Colossus's music was amazing.
Especially this one.

If any of you know me at all, you know that I absolutely adore Okami.
My 3 favorite tracks:

The Sun Rises
Battle of Orochi II
Reset (Thank You)

And of course,  Cave Story.
378  Developer / Design / Re: "Horror games are not scary" on: May 31, 2010, 06:01:11 PM
Well, I'm too much of a scared little vagina to do anything even MILDLY scary, I wouldn't know much about horror games. But I did play through Resident Evil 4, which wasn't scary at all, so I can see where your friend is coming from.
379  Player / General / Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2 on: May 31, 2010, 05:32:37 PM
I'm loving it so far (except for the spring powerup, the bird thing, and the swimming parts).
I have 43 stars right now (I got it Saturday). Definently one of my favorite platformers.

Am I the only one who can see a Super Cave Story Galaxy possible?
