Sei lá, em geral o povo da internet não costuma ficar feliz quando se começa a falar em língua estrangeira. Esse tópico pode ser direcionado ao povo brasileiro, mas ainda assim...

Those are the most extreme fans. Not all fans qualify as this. I enjoyed Sonic Unleashed both as a game and (half of it) as a Sonic game. I would happily play a game like that again. I also enjoyed the handeld games I played.
A friend of mine, who is an actual Sonic fanboy, also enjoyed Sonic Unleashed as a Sonic game, though we played different versions. I think he mentioned something about wanting the chubby Sonic back once or twice, but I don't think he meant it. He actually seemed to like Sonic Unleashed and didn't nitpick.
The thing is that most 3D sonic games before Sonic Unleashed weren't designed around speed and usually had bad controls. I played Sonic Heroes, which had some good ideas, but was terrible in general. I only played Sonic Adventure recently and I have to say, if that game was good, it didn't age well. The Sonic fanboy crowd might rely too much in their nostalgia glasses, but they have a point when they say that Sega have delivered many bad 3D Sonic games up until recently.

Because using the character of a franchise known for certain characteristics brings the expectation of those characteristics. It isn't something about Sonic or Metroid, it can happen in any franchise, like Resident Evil. It also isn't to say that deviating from this is entirely bad. I enjoyed Sonic Battle, as an example.
What if Metal Gear became a beat'em-up? What God of War became a FPS? What if GTA became a RTS? To a lesser extent, what if Mario's jumps became more realistic and he wasn't able to use them as an attack anymore? What if Megaman didn't get the bosses weapons and the entire weakness thing was dropped or if it became 100% linear? It wouldn't be necessarily bad, but it wouldn't feel the same. All comes down to expectations, which are even stronger when the same characters from before are involved. Without a warning and a good explanation (or even with them) the fans of the franchise may feel disappointed, and not necessarily just the most extreme ones.
Even Mario, that experiments a lot, always keeps some elements and doesn't drop it's main series altogether.
Particularly in Sonic's case, most fans are expecting a good Sonic game forever, but most recent Sonic games (at least the console ones) have been bad not just as Sonic games, but as games in general.
EDIT: It's the same people don't like game movies or book movies. Even when they are not bad, they bring expectations and fail to live up to them.

Oh, I see. I should've paid more attention on that page. I didn't even notice candyland and the giant burgers . Well, since the setting will be Eggman's space amusement park ( ), I guess it makes sense... somewhat. The powerups showed seem to be very interesting and adequate for a sonic game, that emphasizes constant movement.

Aww, but I like sonic boost . It is useful when you slow down because of an obstacle and have to accelerate again or to speed midair. It is also useful to defeat enemies directly ahead without having to stop... Oh well. Since it apparently it will be 2D, there will be little need for it, after all it was probably created to replace the spin dash in 3D environments. Anyway, it couldn't be "spammed" because it had a limited amount of uses. Will the game be called Sonic Colours in the EU.

But that's only a problem when the reader also knows the original language, right? In which case, why would they be reading the subtitles? And as for translations I would rather have a good replacement joke rather than have someone stop for a moment to explain a joke or to have something that makes no sense whatsoever.
I don't think so. Seldom the replacement jokes are as good and fit as well in the context as the original ones. I'm not from an english-speaking country and I have watched a good amount of movies both dubbed and subtitled. The quality drop in the dubs are very often evident when you experience the movie as it was intended originally. Besides, learning stuff from other cultures should be regarded as a benefit, not a flaw.

It just occurred to me how this mentality is similar to the Muhammad depictions controversy, which makes it even more absurd.
Will a kid show raise the kids to be neo-nazis? As I said before, unless they are teaching xenophobia (or racism or sexism...), I don't think so.

So what. Are we going to be forever scared and offended by a dead man? Nobody will ever be allowed to use a toothbrush moustache again?
As long as this show doesn't teach xenophobia, I don't see what is the problem.
