It would be really bad faith to say that it was not "heavily inspired" by FEZ. That said, phish doesn't have a finished game so he has nothing to complain of.
Except, you know, the games he has finished.

So your saying someone who calls him out on being a sell out, to be a fan of his work? She called him out by saying "Get in the van." repeatedly, that's not very fan like. :/ Kind of just sounds like she didn't like his book, or perhaps she thinks he's a joke. Do you honestly think someone who knows the name of his book thinks he's an invading sellout, hoping to knock him down a peg? The only person in that video who harped on how Henry Rollins is an over-the-hill has been that doesn't get the kids these days, is Henry Rollins. Though I'm sure there are hipster indie game developers, hell if Eric McQuiggan's avatar is a picture of himself I'd basically classify him as a hipster with his square framed glasses and classic Flat Cap hat just on appearance alone. Which may explain why he is so touchy on the subject.
Nah, I'm a fat nerd. I come by glasses and Irish hats honestly. I mean, my bike has breaks and all the gears! (But I do only listen to Canadian Indie bands, wear shirts that other people like to talk about and only drink beers from Ontario/Quebec microbreweries, hrm, maybe you're on to something....)

i don't think it's that moot because creating art for a game doesn't necessarily give you the experience to be able to design and develop a game (in particular, level design skill is a very hard skill and takes longer to develop than programming skill), but it's probably better than starting from complete inexperience Sure, but you don't know all the skills that Gabe has. But, the point is still moot, because, as noted, IT ISN'T HIS FIRST GAME. you also didn't answer my other question (about judging a game to be good ahead of time not being different in kind from judging a game to be bad ahead of time)
You didn't comprehend what I wrote, I wasn't criticizing your opinion on the game(you didn't provide one in that post). I was being critical of you trying to manage other peoples expectations when it comes to selling, by introducing an arbitrary expectation based on your lack of understanding of the project. But to answer your question, encouragement is what some games need to keep going, saying a game looks good when all you've seen is screen-shots makes sense. ALSO, those two games are some team member's first games, which, according to your arbitrary rule, will make them terrible. Both of those games are "games which were someone's first game and were both good and commercially successful"

Henry Rollins projects his insecurity on a bunch of fans of his work while perpetuating stereotypes?

Stereotypical hipsters don't actually have "avant garde" or "eclectic" tastes in culture though.
Sure, stereotypical ones don't. That's kinda my point.

The reason why the term Hipster persists?
People like to use it to refer to other people, so that they can feel better then 'the hipsters', by claiming 'the hipsters' do the things they do to try and feel superior to others. Maybe because they can't believe other people like that 'lame shit' for real.
Why people need equate people with avant guarde and eclectic tastes in culture with being a 'shithead', I don't know.
I think the best example of this is when an internet comedy writer, on I believe, Cracked, saw a kick-starter for a bunch of West Coast kids who wanted money to go on tour to have good times with other people. He lampooned the shit out of them, calling them hipsters, asking why they wanted money for what 'obviously' is without value, laughing at their potential self injury(from the kickstarter video), and subsequently unleashed the internet child-mind against them. This ruined the plans for trip, causing the west coasters to end up emailing him, asking why he hated them so much and why he did this to them? IIRC he then posted an apology.

@Gabe I really like the flair in the inventory screen, the baroque embellishments were sadly lost when we moved more towards 3d graphics.
@paul First game that was both a commercial success and a critical one? Swords and Sworcery. Another? Terraria.
All this is moot, as this isn't Gabriel's first kick at the can. Which is why I said to not manage other people's expectations, you were telling people what to expect, not your personal reactions. This ain't your job, because you don't have all the information.

i think it's his first game so i'd guess it'd be free (i wouldn't recommend to anyone that their first game be commercial because anyone's first game is going to be terrible)
Dude, that's pretty bad advice. Don't manage expectations for other people's games. Ca'mon, man!

Hehe, yeah. The Rory Macdonald fight was probably my favourite one. It was a joy and pleasure to watch him throw around that punk Nate Diaz like a ragdoll. And yeah, I've been waiting to see the front kick get used more in MMA. I come from Tae Kwon Do where that is the first thing you learn. It's probably the most under-utilized technique besides the boxing jab.
I haven't seen 3 german suplexes since WCW. I think Rory MacDonald needs a bit more personality, but he seems like a rising star. I was really pulling for Hominic over Aldo, I if he could've got his arms free he would've had it in the bag at the end, I guess trying to lay an egg through your forhead isn't the best game plan.

Did anyone see UFC 129 last night?
I did, It was a pretty good card. It's too bad the St. Pierre fight almost put me to sleep. And Steven Segal gets another nod as the reason why Brazilians win with a front kick.

Funny (and relevant story)... I once walked in to a friend's room to find him with his feet up on the desk, and a book in his hand.. his (music) keyboard was over the other side of the room, on the bed. upside down. He was reading "Learn to play the keyboard" (or similar name)..one of those osborne books for kids, with the cartoon characters.. I ask him "What are you doing?" "Learning to play the keyboard" He didn't get very far with that approach.
Funny, It wasn't until I found books and the teachings of others that I was able to learn how to play instruments, before that, when I just picked up guitar/keyboard and started playing I was just making form and direction-less noise. I've been playing/thinking about games for most of my waking life, and I still find value in the ideas and conclusions of others. Their approaches and conclusions might be different then yours, tempering your ability as a game designer.

Alot of these are really mundane! This world is PERFECT. There are no bad things! Rephrasing the answer to the question "What don't you like in videogames" is boring! I will fix some of them Allow me to mute the voice acting Have all the voice acting done by David Attenborough. Have a pause and a skip function for cutscenes. Have the raddest cutscenes so you would never want to pause or skip them. Always have super low poly version of your game Always be Beamed Directly into your MIND so that the interfaces between you and the game are never a problem!
