I've personally been a big fan of hotseat play all my life... online has no personality, it's just not the same. Super Smash Bros. (any of the three, though the N64 specifically) is the best multiplayer experience ever crafted (in terms of competitive multiplayer anyway... cooperative games are good in a different way) in my humble opinion. I think that if I were forced to quit either single player or local multiplayer for the rest of my life, I'd quit single player, because some of the most fun times of my life involve local multiplayer. There's no replacement for it.

And that's funny because I don't actually like modern first person shooters very much. I think Goldeneye is a much more fun and intuitive game than, say, Halo.
Honestly I guess I'm just not a fan of the genre in general. Insofar as I am, though, I definitely prefer PC shooters to RPG shooters. That dual stick control thing doesn't really do it for me.
You're right, though, that modern RPGs seem poorer than they were in the late 90s and early 00s. It may be that a good one just hasn't come out in a while... or it may be that hardcore genre games are just sort of losing their luster these days. Most modern games that I enjoy don't fit very cleanly into a single genre. Mass Effect, in my opinion the only halfway decent RPG of the past few years (and I don't even like it that much), uses far-from-typical RPG gameplay. And the best FPSes of recent years - Portal, Half-Life 2 - have relentlessly innovative gameplay to make up for the tropes they otherwise follow.

The reason why people say new games suck is because they're still new. They're not proven yet. Those games eventually withstand the test of time, people play them, then they become people's favorite games.
"We can only know a game is good if it has been around long enough for other people to tell us it is good"? Funny, I thought you could just, like, play 'em.

Honestly it's been a while since I've seen an industry game that really impressed me. I think our friend here is confusing production values for fun. I mean, sure, the industry has developed, people have learned things from each other, and hence a lot of game design today is more polished and avoids some nastiness that old games might have had - but the same thing has happened with literature or film, and yet I still enjoy ancient epic poems. There's still that human spark. Similarly, 20 years ago, developers still knew what fun was, even if they had limited tools to work with. And sometimes limitations make things awesome.
Personally a lot of modern industry games are boring as hell, and the fact that they're more complicated than many games of yore really does very little for them. I still think Metroid and Super Mario Bros and Zelda are fun games, well designed in a way that age cannot detract from. (It doesn't end with those three, but I didn't intend to spend my whole morning ranting to a bunch of people who probably agree with me, given this is an indie game forum, anyway)

In fact, I'd never thought I'd say this about Autechre, but this album comes pretty damn close to being emotionally touching. The machines are weeping. Really? I find Confield positively devastating ("VI Scose Poise", "Pen Expers" and "Lentic Catachresis" all seem very deeply sad to me, and "Eidetic Casein" [I sound like such a nerd right now] seems almost playful, while "Uviol" sounds tired out, or perhaps that's just because that's the mood I happen to be in when I put it on usually). I don't find their music cold or emotionless at all. But you're right, this album seems quite abnormally emotional for them. I am very excited by it.

I'm pretty sure this guy's a hired spammer posting vaguely related posts to try and coerce us to click his apetizing ONLINE DIRECTORY OF SWISS ENTERPRISES signature link.
Yes, there are people out there paid to do this kind of stuff. It's as sad as it seems.
I didn't even notice. @Droqen - Oh! I totally know that game; I used to play the hotseat mode with my brothers. It is called Dogs of War. http://www.giantbomb.com/dogs-of-war/61-25068/Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding a download, but hopefully this is the game you mean?

For instance, in the track "ilanders" (my fave so far), there are huge random gaps in the beat.
You're right, that track is incredible. I love Autechre again. Or if this is fake, I love some artist whose name I know not.

When faced with certain death, Yoshis have the (possibly involuntary) reaction of dispersing their matter into a semi-conscious mist.
Sort of like the vampires in Baldur's Gate II then?

Currently listening to a (100% real) leak of the new Autechre album Oversteps, and holy shit, the beats take the backseat to ambient synth washes and, like, non-obscured fully audible melodies!
It sounds a bit like later Coil or something.
Is it good? Also, can I has?

In Commander Keen, for the longest time I saw his little robot arms as a large nose. I'm not sure why. ahahahahaha i didnt realize they were arms until now xD i don't think i ever knew what they were, but i guess nose was the closest thing I didn't think it was a nose, because in general I just didn't know what the hell that guy was supposed to be. :D

What purpose do boobs serve in a fighting game? Only to titilate.
And you're calling other people immature, geez. I find that word very offensive. I dont remember calling anyone immature, or juvenile. Of all the things I said you choose to take offence with the word titilate. I can understand swearwords, a little, if they are aimed at you but that word in that context, I dont get it. I was actually joking. I know what "titillate" means, it just amused me in the context. :D
