Yeah, I pretty much agree with what you all have said. I personally don't believe combos are a must-have, but I understand their positive effect on a fighting game. I just really don't like when they're the main focus of the game, when being hit once means you're dead and the game temporarily turns into Guitar Hero, without you being able to do anything about it. Because, you know, you got hit once. This is a especially big problem when the game lacks balance, like MvC2.
when you perform a "combo" in Brawl is not because you're correctly timing a button sequence, it's because you're reading your opponent's moves smartly and punishing accordingly. Sure, it's more random and doesn't require memorizing long button combinations, but it still requires skill and it still creates a "barrier" between beginners and experienced players.

Ah, "competitive gaming". There's always been a constant trolling between the Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Melee "competitive communities". Each community claims their game is better than the other, but the Melee community insists that Brawl is not even a competitive fighter. Which is hilarious because both games were designed by the man who created Kirby, the platformer series that aims to be accessible to anyone. The Melee players argue that Brawl:
1- Is slower 2- Has random 'tripping' 3- Lacks character balance 4- Lacks combos
I personally don't think it being slower makes a lot of difference. Random tripping sucks, that's something I completely agree with them. The game has two notoriously broken characters, that's another point for them, but Melee wasn't exactly the most balanced fighter ever. It had some near useless characters like Pichu and Kirby. But something I've really been thinking about is the lack of combos.
How does Brawl lack combos? In SSB64 and Melee, there was a lot of 'hitstun'. That means, if you get hit you'll be stunned for a brief moment, allowing your opponent to keep hitting you and effectively making a ~combo~. In Brawl, the hitstun was greatly reduced, making it almost impossible to link several attacks, especially with Brawl's floatier gameplay. So instead of combos, Brawl is 100% about hard reads and punishing, making it WAY more defensive than Melee.
As designers, do you think combos are a very important part of a fighting game? Would you think the lack of combos makes a fighter worse than other? I find this weird because Smash lacks a lot of fighting game staples (like meters, walls, hit counters, etc.), I don't see why it lacking Street Fighter combos would be that much of a problem. Sure, Brawl is in consequence much less flashy, but I don't think it completely removes the challenge, or the strategy involved.

I was precisely going to make a thread about that. I didn't like how floaty the controls felt I don't mind them, Sakurai wanted to make the combat more 'aerial'. It's also way slower than Melee, but not that much slower compared to SSB64. I like it, personally. the B moves felt much more weak than before You can't really generalize like that. B moves don't have a fixed 'strenght', they vary wildly from move to move, character to character. And it's always been like that. Unless your main character got particularly nerfed, like Samus. and a good many of the features felt unfinished and unpolished. I really don't know what those features are, but it may be just me.

You can use a Classic Controller with homebrew. Still, I'll give the normal controls a chance first, at first I hated the shaking in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wario Land: Shake It!, but I got used to it. I've shaked my DS while playing the first New Super Mario Bros.

I overthink a lot, specially stupid things. I may overthink about events that happened years ago, it's just crazy.
Do you think all games being multi-platform would be a good thing?

I went through something similar, but it was because of Resident Evil and its cutscenes. I mean, even if you don't completely understand, there's a reason the characters become awful polygon models after the cutscenes end.

If you play them consistently, repair. If not, just buy a new Wii. To be honest, I'd only miss the N64 games. Those are very hard to emulate and I really like playing them with a GC controller. I could live without the rest, even if I'd miss my Wii having a lot of channels. Don't you have the homebrew channel? Homebrew channel can transfer all your save files. (Uh, don't tell Nintendo you installed it though.) And there are only like two or three (oh god, Brawl) games which don't allow you to transfer saves normally. Yeah, but if I recall correctly: your Wii needs to be able to read the disc of the game's data you're transferring. If your Wii can't do that, then it's still of no help. It looks like I'm out of luck. Also: It is my understanding that if the old console is broken, Nintendo will allow you to transfer your "wii shop ID" to a new console. Then you will be able to re-download all your VC games to the new console. They will not let you do this just on a whim but the one exception is if the old console is broken then they will do it. I think you should call Nintendo tech support and say "my console broke, if I buy a new one can I transfer the Wii shop ID". Nintendo customer service is very eager to please. When I had to get my console fixed there was a horrible mistake that was really basically my fault and a manager called me back three days later apologizing all over the place and asking what he could do to make things better. Sadly, I can't call Nintendo since there's no 'Nintendo of Mexico' or whatever. I sent an email a couple of weeks ago, though, and they told me I should get it repaired at the only "official repair center" (which happens to be a regular electronics repair center). I'm also quite far from that shop. I'll sent another email asking them if they can transfer my Wii Shop ID, though, that'd be great. i voted the "buy a PS3" option I will, maybe. But I need a Wii first Or keep your money and use an emulator on PC? My PC sucks, and I really need a working Wii. I can't use an emulator for a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament.

This is "fight the thread pollution" material, but I really wanted to make the poll. As I've mentioned before, my Wii doesn't work, getting it repaired is the cheapest solution but there's no official Nintendo repair shop in Mexico, so it could break again in some time (this is the second time it happens). Getting a new Wii sounds like a good idea, it's less likely for a new Wii to break (also, there's the awesome limited red Wii right now). The problem is, I'd lose my non-transferable save files and Virtual Console games. Also, since it'd be more expensive, I wouldn't be able to get a PS3 soon... but I'm not even sure if I really want one, I'm too poor to buy games for 3 consoles (Wii, DS/3DS, PS3). What would you guys do? 1- Buy a red Wii, lose your save files and VC games. Don't buy a PS3, at least not soon. 2- Get your Wii repaired again and hope it doesn't break for the third time. Keep your save files and VC games, and probably buy a PS3. I've been trying to decide for ages, and I just can't decide. I thought reading some opinions may be helpful

I don't mind used games, as long as they're in good condition. Most new games are around $81 USD around here, so it's always nice to buy a nice looking used for cheaper.

A mí me gusta creer que mi español es bastante superior a mi inglés, con eso de que jamás he salido de México.
(I like to believe my Spanish is way better than my English, being that I've never been outside of Mexico).
