I actually was talking about regular SDTVs. There are plenty to choose from in my analog-TV-by-default country   Tongue

I'd say yes. Cheap and perfectly functional. Even more functional for your Wii than a HDTV since you won't have blurry looking games or lag.
983  Player / General / Re: I'm getting a Wii for Christmas on: December 01, 2010, 11:25:04 AM
I have experienced near to no lag with some HDTVs, while almost one second of lag with others, regardless of the CRT vs LCD thing. I can't honestly say I know what's the most important factor, but the article I linked mentions native resolution as the main problem - Wii doesn't output HD, so the HDTV's processor has to upscale the image, taking a bit of time. This makes more sense considering this problem is nonexistent with SDTVs.

Phubans, I'd personally recommend playing your Wii on a SDTV, most HDTVs create awful video game lag on non-HD consoles. It's going to be more noticeable with games that require precise actions (like fighting and rhythm games). Still, you need to read the linked article for more information. I've decided I'm always going to own a SDTV for Wii and older consoles   Sad

I truly hated the idea of installing the Homebrew Channel, precisely because I like my consoles being 'pure' too. But the replay cheat for Brawl is practically a necessity for big tournaments, and the emulation is pretty nice too (also, you only need to install the Homebrew Channel, all the applications can be accessed via SD). And no, installing Homebrew Channel doesn't brick your Wii, it's a completely safe process and you can always delete it before updating your Wii system and install it again afterwards. Still, I think installing it voids the warranty, so it's better for Wii already out of warranty.

Every official update deletes the Homebrew Channel, but you can always install it again using the "Smash Stack" method. They simply can't patch Super Smash Bros. Brawl (or any other retail game), so there's no way to stop people from using this method.

I use it mostly for Gecko OS cheats (removing Brawl's limit to only save replays of matches shorter than 3 minutes, using custom textures and music) and emulators. The PS1 emulator is unbelievable decent, by the way, it's ridiculous how it's much better than the N64 one (at least with the ROMs/ISOs I tried).

My friend was psyched when he discovered he could buy the classic Smash Bros. on WiiWare for $5(?) only to find it unplayable without spending another $20 for each classic controller.

Except you are told what controllers are compatible with the game you're buying:

N64 games are only playable with GameCube or Classic controller.

Then again, I'm not sure why people would choose the VC over "unofficial" emulation.

Because the emulation is perfect. I have bought several N64 games for Wii because they're not properly emulated on my PC, or in the Wii itself using the Wii64 emulator. And the GameCube controller is very good for N64 games.

Muramasa is a really easy game

It is? I suck, then. I swear there are parts I found very difficult.

I have a question, though... I'm a little confused about all the different controller types! There's the standard Wii remote, the Wii remote Plus, the Wii remote Motion Plus, the nunchuk, and the classic controller... WTF! That's like 5 different things to choose from! I was planning on getting the classic controller... Assuming it works with most games? Will it also work with the newer ones? What kind of controllers will I need for stuff like Smash Bros & Goldeneye? Could I get away with getting 4 classic controllers?

I'll have to agree with Inanimate, GameCube controllers work for most non-remote games, and you'll need them for GameCube games. All Virtual Console games work with a GameCube controller, but some games (mostly SNES games) feel much better with a Classic Controller because of the button layout. Classic Controllers are good and all, but they need to be connected to a Wii remote, so if you want 4 Classic Controllers, you'll need 4 Wii remotes first. Don't worry that much about the motion plus, I think it's included in your bundle and so far, very few games use it. Wii remotes with included motion plus will soon replace standard Wii remotes on stores.

As a final note, don't buy 3rd party controllers. There are 3rd party Wii remotes that while very cool looking, have been reported to stop working rather soon. Same with Classic Controllers, don't buy a Nyko Wing, ever. Mine broke a few months after I bought it   Cry
989  Player / General / Re: Do you like wasabi? on: November 27, 2010, 04:21:35 PM
I love wasabi, and I pronounce it correctly because when your read it in Spanish, it sounds exactly like the Japanese word   Smiley  Most of my friends and family don't like it, so I get to eat theirs when we have sushi. Sometimes I eat it so much that my nose and forehead start hurting a bit, it's like ultra-awesome mustard.

- Wario Land: Shake It!: One of the best Wario Land games as far as I'm concerned - kind of short, but really fun and has tons of replay value. One of the best looking games on Wii.

- A Boy and His Blob: A 2D platformer-puzzle, re-imagining of the NES title of the same name. Very charming and fun, a really unappreciated game.

- Super Paper Mario: If you haven't played the first two, you won't have a problem with it being more platformer than RPG. Absurdly charming too, it's a "love letter to 8-bit games" according to some 1UP guy, and I completely agree. The boss battles are hilarious, like this one and this one. One of my favorite games this generation.

- Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars: The true sequel to MvC2 according to Capcom some time ago. It's a very fast and technical fighter, and has a pretty memorable roster. Wi-Fi is pretty decent, too. But you'll seriously need a Classic or GameCube, this is downright unplayable with a Wii remote, even with a nunchuk.

- Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon: Roguelike starring a Chocobo. It's fun, but it gets very difficult at some points, and the voice acting is terrible. I had a lot of fun with this, but it's definitely for roguelike fans.

- Mario Kart Wii: Best online game for Wii, by far. Big roster, a lot of tracks and play modes, various control options (sideways remote for motion controls, which are surprisingly good - remote + nunchuk or GameCube controller for traditional play). Never gets old, really.

- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: I'd recommend getting the GameCube version, since it was originally made for that console and then ported to the Wii with slightly less precise controls (except for the bow, it's much better on Wii). But it's your decision. Got mixed reviews, but I think it's very good.

- Muramasa: The Demon Blade: Beautiful looking action RPG, this is also one of the prettiest Wii games in my opinion. It's a bit repetitive, but I had a lot of fun with it. It's also very difficult. And the female protagonist's name is Momohime, which means "Princess Peach" (completely random fact that made decide play as her).

- Punch-Out!!: Very fun and addictive "boxing simulator", that it's more of a music-less rhythm game. It's also a re-imagining of the NES game, featuring several controller options, modes and new characters.

- Super Smash Bros. Brawl: I can see why I lot of people don't like it, but it's by far my most played Wii game. It can be played as a party fighter with tons of collectibles and ulockables, and even a decent 1P story mode. And you can play it as a competitive fighter, with a not-that-bad "competitive community". This game has TONS of characters and music I love, I'd recommend it to everyone with at least some Nintendo love.

- Super Mario Galaxy 2: Truly the best game of the year, for me. I don't recommend you getting both the first one and this, this is the better one and a game that should be owned by every Wii owner. Amazing level design and music, and it's also a very good looking game. It gets difficult at times, but it's a seriously good game.

Other games that I might have or haven't played but are considered good:
- Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
- Monster Hunter Tri
- Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
- Okami
- Dead Space Extraction
- Boom Blox Bash Party
- Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
- Metroid Prime Trilogy (I'm not a big fan of first-person games, but they're very atmospheric and polished)
- ExciteBots
- Samurai Shodown Anthology (needs GC/Classic controller, remote sucks for this)
- The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga (needs GC/Classic controller, remote sucks for this)
- SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 (needs GC/Classic controller, remote sucks for this)
- Data East Arcade Classics (needs GC/Classic controller, remote sucks for this)
- Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
- Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
- Castlevania Judgement (weird and unbalanced fighter, but it's one of my guilty pleasures)
- de Blob
- Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus (needs GC/Classic controller, remote sucks for this)
- Kirby's Epic Yarn
- Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

WiiWare:
- Mega Man 9
- Mega Man 10
- World of Goo
- Jett Rocket (generic 3D platformer, not bad, rather cheap and looks great)
- ExciteBike: World Rally (NES remake, with online play and customization options)
- Bit.Trip Runner
- Adventure Ilsand: The Beginning
- Pokémon Rumble (simplistic but fun action RPG)
- Lost Winds
- NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

Some GameCube games:
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Luigi's Mansion
- Wario World
- Tales of Symphonia
- Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
- Resident Evil Remake
- Resident Evil 0
- F-Zero GX
- Skies of Arcadia Legends
- Kirby Air Ride (very easy and simplistic, but still fun)
- Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door
- i-Ninja
- Ikaruga
- The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
- Mario Gold: Toadstool Tour (the best arcade-ish golf game to date, in my opinion)

991  Player / Games / Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns! on: November 26, 2010, 06:37:37 PM
Oh, well. I'm not getting a PS3 for christmas -_- I need to buy this, Kirby and other games. And a new Wii, I decided I'm getting a new one instead of repairing my launch one. I'm really excited for this game. I loved DKC and especially DKC2, so I'll miss Dixie but it's not a big deal.

I just finished up Wario Land: Shake It for the Wii, and it has rekindled my passion for classic platformers.

Yup! Wario Land: Shake It is really good. Wii has got a very nice 2D platformer catalogue.

994  Player / General / Re: What are you thankful for? on: November 25, 2010, 08:58:57 PM
- Being healthy
- Friends
- Dog
- Family
- Being old enough to have experienced several gaming generation, I really feel bad for people who started playing during the PS2CubeBox era and are not able to appreciate anything before that
995  Player / General / Re: PS3 Games on: November 23, 2010, 08:01:36 PM
The original Spelunker is very addictive, fun, and hilariously difficult. I'm definitely getting Spelunker HD when I get a PS3.
996  Player / General / Re: Fight Thread Pollution! Post here if it's not worth a new thread!!! on: November 22, 2010, 07:34:51 PM
You guys are making me want to play Mother 3 now, which would be a good idea because my Wii doesn't work and I'm not playing anything on my DS right now. But that would make me like Lucas and I don't need another Super Smash Bros. Brawl main, nine are enough and it's very difficult to keep them all at tournament level.

You could always change that   Wink

-the Paper Mario series (Super Paper Mario never happened)
When people act like Super Paper Mario is not as good as the other two games   Sad

Seriously, it's probably my favorite Paper Mario game (and I truly love them all). It's just less RPG, more platformer, still hilarious and way too charming. I missed the Mario-enemy-based party members a lot, but on the other hand we had Luigi, Peach and Bowser. One of my favorite current generation games definitely.

Ugh, difficult decision. I voted Tumetsu.
