The Y is too slanted and looks funny, sort of kills the dynamicness by drawing the attention away from the nice bit (the rest of it).

Also, kYn, that's really great. If you didn't say anything I'd have thought it finished.

i have a sort of half finished engine but im too stupid to make it fun to play and do menus and whatever because i am not an artist or a programmer so its never getting finished. how do you like those apples.
I love how this looks. I'd beat you down and jack your computer to play it.  Kiss
343  Developer / Design / Re: Portal's Ending on: January 10, 2009, 05:40:45 AM
Too be honest I didn't find the Portal ending great apart from the actual escape. That was atmospheric and I felt like I was being chased but killing Glados and the ending song didn't really do it for me.

While I cried the second time through watching 2001: A Space Odyssey when HAL died, I didn't bat an eyelid at glados' death, she was trying to kill me for no reason, HAL at least had a logical motive.

The ending song was cute, but it was either the fact that I had heard some bits from it before or something that didn't do it for me, some of the lines were clever that's all.

Also, the plot twist wasn't surprising at all, I would've liked it a lot more if it wasn't so damn obvious. Hmm, a robot in complete control that isn't empathatic at all, I wonder what will happen next?

It was a fun puzzle game, sure, but I don't get the love for Glados other than as light entertainment. Huh?

I dismember Yama and reassemble the plot, thickening it some more with blood.
345  Developer / Art / Re: Hey look! Amazing Paul Robertson makes an animation that aired on TV! on: January 10, 2009, 05:30:07 AM
Makes sense.

"HEY! want our energy drink?"
"Sure, I'll have one"
"HA! IT DOESN'T EXIST. SIKE"
:D You just made my day.

That animation was great, once it got into it, the black and white bit was sort of Huh? though.
346  Developer / Creative / Re: Displacing 'fun' from the game designer's lexicon on: January 10, 2009, 05:24:56 AM
Gnarf: Some games are good. Some games are bad. Thusly, your argument is false. Some things are more fun than others.
Some games are seen as good by the majority, some games are seen as bad by the majority. Even though I am one for fun being subjective I don't disagree that many people share the same traits, leading to commonly accepted definitions of 'good' and 'bad', etc. I don't doubt that I would disagree with you that ET is a bad game, it is just that I think it stupid to seriously say that nobody will ever enjoy the game. The point I was trying to make is that the quality of the product is not in the product itself but in the perception of the product by the person, hence there being no universal "good/bad" scale. This is pretty irrelevant now though, so I'm not going to say any more after this.

A fancy spoon could make food taste better, sure -- there's a lot of psychology that goes on there. When I eat with a silver spoon I especially enjoy the meal. I definitely don't think the game is like the food, because I can have fun without games, but I can't eat without food.
While I don't disagree with you, I think of games more as food because there are types of food that the majority of people like (fruit, say), and there are foods that some people enjoy and others don't (chilli, for example), and there is food that a very small amount of people enjoy (haggis, for example's sake). The spoon is like the interface between the game and the player, the game can be enhanced or detracted from by how I can interact with it. I may really enjoy soup, but I'm not going to enjoy it as much if I have to eat it with chopsticks.

That is, if all you can do is eat the food and nobody takes it away from you.

Quote from: GeneralValter
Some things are more fun than others, and you have to be able to recognize which game design decisions make a game the most fun.
Let's assume, for a second, that I found going outside and staring into the sun fun, it was engaging, I'd lose track of time and just stare into the sun for hours. To me, that would be the most entertaining thing available. Now, if you found that staring into the moon was the most enjoyable thing ever. Which of these is more fun? What you enjoy or what I enjoy? The point trying to be made is that fun is subjective, that what one person likes someone else may not, so it's not really good to say that there is some universal measure of "fun" an object has.

But that's not really useful, instead perhaps, use rinku's definition of the word? I agree with it and it is helpful with meaning added to the three-letter-word. Just find out what things engage the people you are targetting your game at.

As for the topic -- to be specific about what fun is, I think it usually is used to name the following characteristics. It's the opposite of boredom: it's hard to be bored and to have fun simultaneously. It's something that hold's the player's attention: if you're having fun with something, your attention is on that thing and not on other things, sometimes you can lose your sense of time due to focusing exclusively on the fun activity, at the expense of your surroundings.

And yes, I know "fun is subjective" and all that, but I think the description above describes what fun usually refers to. Of course sources of fun vary, but when someone calls something fun they usually mean that it doesn't bore them, and that they can lose themselves in it, losing their sense of time while doing it.
This is a great way to sum up what we think of when we think of fun rinku, I didn't even think of it before.

I thought Vista was the Windows 7 beta?
/topic

I can't test this even if I wanted to, and I don't. Beta operating systems don't seem like my cup of tea.
350  Developer / Creative / Re: Displacing 'fun' from the game designer's lexicon on: January 07, 2009, 10:49:24 PM
Rather than asking "Why did you find it fun?" a better question would be "What did you enjoy?".

I wouldn't be able to tell you why I find things fun moreso than I can tell you what my favourite colour is. Of course, I can tell you what things I had fun doing, etc.

Also, I interpret this thread to be about getting more detailed feedback from people other than "I like it!" or "It was fun!" and put it all to good use. While I personally don't make games I don't think that "fun" is something you can really analyse, it would be much more effective to go by feedback from others and more importantly, feedback from yourself. If you find it fun, then there will probably be others out there that find it fun as well. People are similar on a lot of levels.

My resolution is to further my conquest of barbarian lands in the name of the Mighty Brittania! We shall soon be entering India while the second strike team reaches South-Western China, the offensive seems to be continuing well and hopefully it will leave me enough time to continue with my exotic animal rug-making. Onwards to glory!

Serious goals;
- Release (several) noise albums during this year.
- Improve guitar playing skill and start my Pokemon Metal band.
- Improve art skills.
- Possibly make a game [Possibly]

Plus, the time you spend adding your game backlog and updating it could just as well be put towards actually playing the games Undecided
Especially seeing as how many I have. Updating the backlog would be one of those things I would forget about or put off.

You are actually in a dream, you're in reality in a trench and you've got a bad open wound on your right leg and most of your comrades are dead. Soon you'll wake up. The enemy is about to launch a terrible attack. Take advantage of your good life it won't last for long  Gentleman
When you close your browser you'll wake up.
You close your browser?  Undecided
Not anymore.

Seeing all the games I haven't finished would depress me even more.  Shrug

Those are very cute. I would suggest making them less smooth and more contrasty though.

battlerager;
That was downright cool. You avoided the crappiness of some of the MIDI instruments really well, I didn't notice it was MIDI at all.

mirosurabu;
Very nice, pretty calm and relaxing and I liked the way it sort of floated along. It did feel a bit weak in parts though, I couldn't tell you exactly why though.

Draco9838;
It has that arcade game atmosphere for sure, but that first instrument that fades in and out is annoying, I think it would be a lot nicer to fade in and stay loud.

kekskiller;
I really liked it, very atmospheric. My favourite tracks were N and O, I like your noise.

BaronCid;
I listened to this a while ago, and, although it's not usually the type of music I listen to it was well put together.

[size=4ptAnd the next night I dreamt I did it with two girls. In a bathtub. At the same time.[/size]
I forgot to mention that the bath was located in some sort of cave. It was pretty bizzare looking back. Also a one-off.

I wish I could get dreams like that. Sad

I hate it when I dream that I am having a romantic relationship with a pretty girl, it's all romantic and everything, the girl is in love and I am a much better character than in real life, nothing sexual but just platonic love but everything is perfect. No much words exchanged, it's generally a travel or something, like a train trip through europe. And then I wake up.
The only bad things about these dreams is the waking up part. Although I am usually happy for the rest of the day.

I thought it would be a lot more. I don't think I leave Firefox open overnight though.

Commence TIG-grinding.

During my holiday I dreamt my grandfather gave me a handjob until I had sores.

And the next night I dreamt I did it with two girls. In a bathtub. At the same time.

Blank out a bit and find myself in a deep underground cave with low ceilings. The rocks are blueish black and are warped and twisted. In my hand is a big, thin sword and I'm following a polar bear through the cave. I get to a door where I'm told by the bear that I am the only one allowed through and there is Iron in there that no man is allowed to touch. Stepping through I find myself in a eliptical cavern with more dark twisted rock, opposite the door I came through is another door, with the corpse of a vampire (that I vaguely recall) lying in it. In front of there is the  Witch Queen, and in front of her is a thin rock pillar. Off the my left is what looks like a hemispherical climbing frame made from iron, which is the same consistancy as the rocks in the cave. Finding something *wrong* with everything, I realise I've been reading a book in my dream which has suddenly changed into a Choose your own adventure book, I get angry as I don't want to have to guess the right way out and want to know what happens to me.

I think it originates from me reading a bad CYOA book and dying several times for no reason. Needless to say I was angry.
