You guys... WTF
You cannot upload an avatar to the forums, it'd cost a lot in bandwidth.
Do not host your shit on deviantart. Use imgur.com or tinypic.com instead. You can also reupload things from other sites on either of those.
Size limit is 150x150 (see <- over there).

We already discussed this earlier in the thread Fifth Mock Anger

Should I go back to pen and paper to complete my idea first? Do I need to take a programming turorial online? Is Game Maker the easiest alternative for a complete n00b? I'm completely lost. Some advice would be appreciated   Shrug
Don't go back to complete your idea, in my experience very few people still have steam left when they've got an entire game down on paper and nothing implemented.
I learned to program with Game Maker, it's a great starting place since it has no libraries or different IDEs to worry about. I mean, honestly, if I could learn GML, then you can too Durr...?Hand Point Left I'd recommend you nab the trial version and follow Derek's tutorial in our tutoorials subforum.
345  Community / Townhall / Re: Steel Storm Episode I is out !!! on: October 03, 2010, 08:23:28 PM
you don't. tigsource has a "you dont find us we'll find you" type of thing going on.
I didn't know this! Tongue
But then I also don't know how you would get your game on the front page besides posting in the announcements and feedback subforums.

Anyways, Motorsep, I really doubt my computer will run the game, but if it can I'll post about it.

Pretty awesome game, and it's emulatable with MAME if you download some SNK plug-in. Though be prepared to get your ass handed to you, every enemy is 3 times as big as you and have instant kill supers.

348  Player / General / Re: Total Time Logged In (don't lie) on: October 01, 2010, 11:42:24 PM
It's total, not contiguous time logged in.

Also, I believe the way SMF counts it is if you load any TIGF pages within a certain time from the last page load, the time from then to now is added to your total. So say the timer is an hour or something, if you idle on the forum index for 59 minutes and then click a link to one of the subforums, it'll add that 59 minutes to your total time logged in, but if you wait 61 minutes it'll assume you haven't been browsing the forum that whole time and not add it to the timer.

Animation does not come easily to me and it was really hard to get this far, so any thoughts or pointers are welcome.
I think the furthest-forward frames for the legs are fine (Nate K, I punch at thee!), but when the leg is going forward it shouldn't touch the ground, he'd be constantly trippin'.
350  Developer / Design / Re: What would you like to see in a small-scale turn-based strategy game? on: October 01, 2010, 11:18:44 AM
If you want actual strategy involved you need to limit the impact of luck; Fire Emblem is so dependent on it (average hit chance is like 50-80%, and then there's criticals) that there's nothing to the games beyond crossing your fingers and positioning your people advantageously. This is what makes that series so fucking boring, atleast for me Lips Sealed.

Also, to contradict Sinclair: I really fucking hate having to pummel enemies with a priest whose only offensive ability is to fist the opposing team, just because they don't level up as quickly when they're being used for healing. It wasn't fun equipping my thief with throw stone just to get more JP in FFT, goddammit!

You don't know what you are talking about right? It does not reduce himself to pixel art, pixel art is harder and more thoughtful and ask for more skills to do it at its level. I guess most artist would have trouble creating a "perfect" 16 colors palettes simply because they are not skilled enough and would not know where to begin.
This... what? Pixel art is no harder than digital painting, it all comes down to which one you're more comfortable with. There are certain aspects of pixel art that make it easier to use for games (easier animation, simplified transparency, etc), so uhh... yeah, what?

When you think about it, why the army isn't comprised exclusively of tigers is beyond me.

No. All the things Phubans listed are short-lasting conditions that are actively induced.
354  Developer / Offering Paid Work / Re: Wanted: [PAID] Box art for a game that is nearly finished. on: September 25, 2010, 12:04:51 AM
Hi,
Is this a job or speculative work? It appears you're trying to get people to send you the work you want done already completed, and then choose between them, which would be speculative work and I really recommend against doing things this way.
You're not liable to get a decent artist this way since everyone but amateur artists skip over the offers, and you're less likely to get your cover in time since artists have no obligation to do so.

Thanks for sharing your experience atleast!

durp. Slight redundancy now.

Um, but 90% of actual infantry work is just heavy manual labor.  Hauling stuff around, digging, carrying more heavy stuff, making barricades, demolition, etc.  And the physiological difference isn't negligible, men naturally have 40% more muscle mass than women.  In fact, even with the same diet and training, women don't experience as much muscle growth as men.  Infantry requires the strength of a very fit man, which would mean an extremely fit woman.
This is pertinent. However, search engines tell me that the average pack weight for Marines (Yahoo Answers Source, yay) is 15-90 lbs, which puts a woman whose gone through boot-camp and everything well in the required strength for even the higher end of that. There is more equipment, but the huge strength-training regiment military personnel go through is as much about discipline as, well, strength-training.

But still, there's a lot of crap that goes on in war that I don't think a woman should have to deal with, for the same reason I don't think guys should have to deal with something intensely feminine like midwifery or something.
AUGH Facepalm NO. I can respect your first point, but this is bullshit. Where do you get this concept from? There are an innumerable number of male nurses and doctors who have helped in child-birthing, and there are likewise a great deal of women involved in traditionally masculine things (e.g. Boxing, spousal abusing, shooting guns, being in leadership positions)
'Feminine' and 'masculine' are social constructs, and this goes back to Fine's research: Women are not any worse than men in math, and men no worse than women in emotional intelligence. Very close in pretty much every faucet of our minds, only a slight difference in hormones. The only way child-birthing is 'feminine' is that birthing part of it only effects women; a man is just as suited to be a midwife as a woman.
357  Player / General / Re: Republican senators block repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell on: September 23, 2010, 11:34:21 PM
And people are arguing that women should be allowed to do a job they're rarely physiologically capable of doing and also go and potentially die for a cause the arguers don't even believe in.
What, exactly, makes them incapable?
Physical fitness in the military has a minimum that pretty much everyone over, say, 5' (bullshit guessed number, but still, there's a point here) can meet, regardless of gender.
The psychological difference between men and women is very small, the overlap is huge and the differences between gender are largely based on societal expectations (See: Cordelia Fine's research) and the only thing exceptional about men is a higher amount of testosterone, which doesn't really matter when you're shooting a gun.
358  Player / General / Re: Republican senators block repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell on: September 23, 2010, 11:16:38 PM
Man, you guys probably think having separate bathrooms for men and women is sexist too, lol.
Don't be condescending just because somebody called you out Undecided Either you're trivializing the people who have addressed you as a form of defense, or it doesn't matter to you and you shouldn't be posting in the first place. Take a moment to try and think about WHY this matters to people, please? The restriction of an occupation based on gender and not skills or physical fitness is in no way comparable to the restriction of one gender to a specific bathroom.
359  Player / General / Re: Republican senators block repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell on: September 22, 2010, 10:14:01 PM
I'm not saying any of that, I think the war on terror we're in is 100% our own making.  I just don't like the idea of putting a woman in a job that demands they be prepared to die.
But putting a man in that situation is fine? Patronizing women is still sexist, we have a volunteer based military.

Inaugural? Epileptic There have been like twenty game nights before.
It usually worked out best at around 10PM GMT, North Americans are awake and it's really good for European TIGers.
