561  Player / General / Steve Jobs discussion (split from "RIP Steve Jobs" thread) on: October 06, 2011, 04:45:56 AM
Being a dick and making an impact in the world are not mutually exclusive, guys.

User interfaces wouldn't be what they are today if wasn't for Apple, neither electronic devices external design, pretty much every mobile phone today tries to look like the iPhone, and all the 3 big consoles have a clear Apple influence on their design (specially the Wii). Not to mention the Appstore that is making a big impact in gaming right now, specially to indies.

I'm not an Apple fan, but I'm feeling quite sad. Pretty much every eletronic device nowadays has some Apple influence, the man really made a big impact in the world. Also, a shame when his company was doing so well...

Rest in peace Mr. Jobs.  Gentleman

I wonder when will the first AAA clone would appear. What can a ton of money and huge team do to the genre?

I don't think that something like Minecraft is possible without the blocky graphics, for instance, Lords of Uberdark (that cell-shaded non-blocky Minecraft "clone") looks too complicated. Also the blocky graphics gave Minecraft a personality. So I don't think a big team and money can do much for it... although I'm sure that we'll see a lot of big companies try to cash in on the genre and fail hard because they can't understand what makes these games fun.

Played a littloe and it's a fun game, got used to WASD+arrows but wish there was a native Gamepad support.

Still, I'm gonna wait for a patch. The achievements are not working and it's getting big framerate drops when there are more than 3 enemies on the screen Sad
565  Player / Games / Re: What's your top 5 formitive games? on: September 29, 2011, 02:10:41 PM
Let's see...

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past - I think Ocarina of Time is a better game but this was the Zelda that marked me the most. The first Zelda I've played it and got impressed by the variety in the gameplay (dungeons, overworld, dozens of items that change the gameplay, big story focus, the whole Zelda thing). Still play it from time to time.

The Secret of Monkey Island / Earth Worm Jim - I enjoy good jokes and non-sense stories in my games and those 2 series are probably the responsibles for it.

Duke Nukem 3D - Probably the game I've played the most in my life, had a great level design. I used to make levels for it, and it was then that I've realized that I wanted to work with games.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - This made me realize how important a good art direction is, the whole art style was made based on the hardware limitations and 8 years later, there's no better looking game than this IMO.

Alley Cat - The first game I've ever played, couldn't leave it out. Tried to play it again recently, and it's still quite fun. Also, compared to other games from the same time (1983) it's quite complex: it has around 7 screens with different gameplay.

567  Developer / Business / Balancing Indie Development with a Daily Job on: September 27, 2011, 05:17:29 PM
So, as many of you, aside from (trying to) develop games independently, I eat and have bills to pay so I got a daily job. Right now I'm working at a local webdesign studio, programming actionscript for websites and such. I'm having problems to focus on my job knowing that I have a bunch of more interesting stuff to work at home, aside from games I'm also building a website with a friend (which is also about games) and been writing some articles for some websites (yep, gaming websites). So... I have 2 questions for those that have day jobs:

How do you keep focused and motivated at your job?
And how do you organize your time to make both things?

it's kinda sad tho that the top 4 best-selling xblig games are:

fortresscraft (minecraft clone)
breath of death vii (dragon quest clone)
remote masseuse (massage game)
i made a game with zombies in it (original arena shooter)

Breath of Death is more of a parody than a clone, it's a pretty funny game and the combat has some neat mechanics.

Fuck it! I'm making a Minecraft clone!
571  Player / Games / Re: cloning games; minecraft; and terrible people on: September 15, 2011, 08:25:38 AM
Fortresscraft was obviously made to be a Minecraft clone, like what Gameloft does all the time.. that kind of practice is terrible.

As for Minecraft/Infiniminer, nowadays no game start from scratch, every game borrows something from another game, notch started making something like Infiniminer because he thought it was cool and realized that the game could be better with some additions, a lot of games start like this.

With all the zombie co-op games coming out these days is a big surprise to me that Zombies Ate My Neighbors haven't seen a remake yet :/

Used to play it for hours with a friend on the Mega Drive, a remake with HD graphics and 4 players online co-op would be awesome...

A new Syndicate was just announced... as an FPS!

Pac-Man sounds more real now...
574  Player / Games / Re: What are you playing? on: September 09, 2011, 03:43:28 PM
Really? I feel like using a smoke grenade here. Hmm, I think I'll avoid this fight and sneak around since I'm low on ammo. Hoo snaps I just got a laser rifle, let's try this thing out. The sniper approach might work better here. Let's see, OH! I could jump off of that building and try that ground pound stun out. I'm a running and gunning, typhoon attack!

Admittedly, I don't feel I'd play through it multiple times, but there's definitely some fun options in many of the situations.

Oh, you have a lot of options to do during "combat", indeed each time I have to pass through some guards I end up doing something different. But I just did a bunch of side quests where I had to get into some people apartments and couldn't figure out a way to enter aside from hacking into the front door. :/

I, for one, can't wait to see Pac-Man remade as a 3D cover-based shooter.
576  Player / Games / Re: What are you playing? on: September 09, 2011, 11:06:16 AM
Yep, the game tells you to look for alternative solutions but most of the times I can't find all those alternatives :/

Other then Deus Ex, started Dead Island and Rock of Ages.

Finding Dead Island to be very fun, it's buggy and outdated but killing zombies in it is fun, specially with a car!

Rock of Ages is hilarious, the mix of tower defense and Super Monkey Ball works very well, finding it a little too hard though.

I came here expecting nothing more than a youtube link and I got all this posts with words.. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!
578  Player / Games / Re: DLC hitting a new low? Capcom charging for pallet swaps on 3rd Strike Online! on: September 01, 2011, 10:15:57 AM
I care because this kind of crap is becoming more and more common, and it shouldn't be.
And it's Capcom! If they want to add DLC to their games, they have the resources and time to make something interesting to the game like a new character, background, game mode or whatever.. they don't need to charge for a color swap, something that a programmer can do in a few minutes.
579  Player / Games / Re: DLC hitting a new low? Capcom charging for pallet swaps on 3rd Strike Online! on: September 01, 2011, 08:51:47 AM
It's still ridiculous. Didn't Capcom introduce the "color editor" mode for 2D fighters in the first place? A palette swap is not some after-production bonus that they couldn't add before release.

Yep, Capcom VS SNK had a Color Edit mode, in facto, KOF XIII will be getting one... FOR FREE!

Shouldn't take long for Upgrade Complete to become a reality.
